apemax Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 (edited) Hello again. I've been working on this MOC on and off for nearly the past year and now i'd like to know what all of you think of it. as the title may suggest this is a prototype (hence some of the random colours) so i'd like to know if anyone knows any way of improving it. I do plan on making this with all the proper colours and everything once i've finished the design. The Brickshelf page: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=462864 (once it's public.) So on to the model. as you can see it's a mech that can be used for pretty much anything. iIt has a chaingun and a missle launcher. It also has a third retractable leg that is used when it fires the chaingun. A front view. A close up of one of the legs. The back view. The Chaingun is on the right and the missle launcher is on the left. Also the third leg retracted. It in firing mode. This makes it more stable. The third leg in use. OrangeKNight Posted February 22, 2011 Posted February 22, 2011 It's a good start, the concept is interesting and I like the thought put into the 'Deployed Stance' with the shield armor, but I do have some concerns. Mainly just how stiff the legs and possibly the arms are, I haven't had a good chance to look them over(posting from my phone at work xD) but I think you'd greatly benefit from getting you hands on some of the T-bar pieces used by the pneumatic stuff, they make fantastic joints in all kinds of set-ups. I'll go into more detail once I get home from work. Mike Quote
tchuk-norst Posted February 23, 2011 Posted February 23, 2011 I like the idea, but it does seem a bit colorful. And the whole thing has a rough feel to it. Maybe that is what you are going for, though. Quote

Anyways, on to some more in-depth comments, these aren't in any particular order, but I'll do my best to group it up by relative items. ChainGun Honeslty, that Chaingun is FAR too small to require the 3rd leg, so heres what I'd do. I'd remove the Current chain gun, and instead try and work a smaller one(s) onto the Main Arm(s), then figure out something new for the Weapon Arm, personally I'm a fan of missile pods like these; HI01 'Sunshine' Unnamed Mecha MAU You wouldn't be able to do a very big one, but still. Stabilizer Leg And for the Stabilizer Leg, the biggest problem for me is that a leg with that many bent joints just isn't very stable, I'd ditch the current leg, and do a pair of solid legs that flip down. Walking Legs As I said before, the legs feel very stiff, and you should look into getting some Pneumatic T Pieces for the legs, they'll greatly improve the posability of the legs and give you more more dynamic options when using the Support Leg(s). to see an example you can heck out my LEGO Heavyarms, all it's leg joints(actually ALL of its joints) use the T-bars, and they are very nice! apemax Posted February 23, 2011 Author Posted February 23, 2011 Thanks for all the comments. All of your suggestions i really like. I would post some pictures of the updated version but it's gotten to dark to take any but hopefully i should be able to post some tomorrow. I'll give a brief description of what i've changed. ChainGun. I've made the ChainGun smaller and mounted it on the left arm and put a RPG launcher on the right arm. I've also mounted a couple of missle pods where the ChainGun was. Stabilizer Leg I've gotten rid of the old leg and put two simpler one's on the back of each leg. Walking Legs Yeah i don't actually have any of those at the moment but i will get some very soon. In the next week or so. So once i get them i'll work on the legs. Quote
