How Will Lego Technic Challenge Be Run in 2011?

33 members have voted

  1. 1. Do you think The Lego Group will open the 2011 competition to both youths AND AFOLs, as they did in 2010?

  2. 2. Do you think that some of the Challenge's monthly themes will be repeated from 2010?

  3. 3. Are you planning on entering the Challenge in 2011?

    • Yes, I plan on entering something each month.
    • Yes, but my entry depends on the monthly theme.
    • No, the competition from other (talented) AFOLs is too tough.
    • No, I don't have enough Technic pieces to complete a model.
  4. 4. Do you think that the Challenge should allow more than one photograph for each entry, to adequately display the model?

    • No, just one photo is adequate.
    • No, but one can make a "collage" of photos into one .JPG file.
    • Yes, there should be several full-size photos allowed to show the model from various angles.
  5. 5. Do you think that some AFOLs "cheat", by posing as youths in the youths-only category?

    • Yes, there were some complex entries that could not possibly have been made by a youth less than 15 years old.
    • No, I think that there are talented youths out there who made their own models.

The Lego Technic Challenge is coming back this Spring. What do you think the monthly themese will be? Please list them below by "Replying" to this post.

Let's assume that the 2010 youth winner (Robin7520 -- Finely Hudson) and the 2010 AFOL winner (Zblj -- Jernej Krmelj) are eligible to compete again in 2011! The prizes they won are impressive:

One of the changes that I would suggest to TLG is that the AFOL's will have their monthly winner also!

There were some really great AFOL entries in each category that giving them prizes as well would be a great plan!

I hope Lego make one change!

They should require a public and a private image. The Public image is of the model for publishing, the private image is for Lego only and should be the builder with Model.

This would eliminate 99% of the cheating, submit any image found on the net, entries.

I'm not sure I'll enter anything this year, I only managed one last year. Time will tell.

I am a bit sceptic about this. Take a kid, put your model in his hands, take a photo. Voila! You are the winner/cheater.

It would at least prevent people from entering images downloaded from the net

To do this you at least have to rebuild the model. (or be very good with Photoshop...) Most cheaters probably won't take that effort.

Actually I like Parax's idea :)

I returned from The Dark Ages in the end of last year so I was not following the competition. But one thing I think should be different is what prices you get. Okay, winning and prices is maybe not the world's most important matter but feels strange getting models you already own (I'm presuming AFOLs already have a lot). I think it is better that you get the entire next year's models as they are released throughout the year.

I might enter depending on themes (I build for fun). I guess I have enough bricks to finish things but I'm not a genius at building technics but I'm learning.

It's about the model not the kid. Just don't publish pictures of your own models in other peoples hands... If you want a random kid to win with your model that is your choice, but no-one else has your model!

You could take the idea a step further and say the private image should have a sheet of paper with the words "Technic challenge" written in it also, but that may get too complex for some...

This is not the first time that false images have been submitted into competitions The same thing happened with a BBC Dr Who competition but it was discovered too late.

I like that Idea a lot!

I really don't think you can stop the cheating, which is a real shame.

Looking at the monthly winners I would say that over 50% were built by adults. It's not just the high standards of the MOCs, I was up there at that age, but just look at the number of parts some of them have. How many under 16s have that many sets all nicely parted out into individual bins of all the different parts and colours. Also notice that the V-TOL is something that is fairly obviously built by an under 16. Then we had the thing of the AFOL submissions not being included for the monthly prizes. Only after that did we suddenly see a large increase in the standard of the MOCs and number of parts used (all the correct colour) in the MOCs that were winning.

I could be wrong, I may have had the ability and pacience but certainly not the parts or the organisation to design and build anything like some of these huge, non multicoloured MOCs in two weeks at that age. Did anyone else here have cos like I say I could be wrong.

I hope I am wrong because it's just so bloody unfair to the under 16's who have the exitement and the will but not the resourses or the experience to match the AFOLs. Lets face it, any under 16 who has the patience and the will to sit down and cultivate their minds to build a MOC instead of play the x-box and generally cause havoc is a miracle. And all *some* people in the AFOL community can do is piss all over them so they can win their precious monthy prize, a prize they could quite easily buy themselves without having to save up their pocket money. It really is disgusting and i'm gonna stop now before I really get pissed off with it.

Just one more thing before I go tho, whilst I am hugely grateful to TLG for the chance to participate in this competition and win some expensive prizes (thankyou so much TLG) I will not be participating in the next one. Although Lego is greatly enjoyed by kids and adults alike I feel that Lego mainly belongs to the children and due to the above, all entries that look as though they were built by adults should banned and no adult competition. I know that sucks for us AFOLs but it is only my humble opinion (and again I could be wrong) that if that's the only way to prevent the under 16's being treated unfairly then that's what must be done.

I am very curious to see what the themes will be for the 2011 competition!! If it is within my ability I'm going to try to enter in every single one of them... I still haven't gotten around to posting my entries from last year  (as I am trying to get a website up and running with them on it)

And about cheating.. I still can't get over how somebody was able to steal Mahjqa's designs last year!!!

That was simply crazy (And heart-breaking!)!!! And although I am not one of them!!.. I have no trouble seeing that there are VERY UNETHICAL people out there that would do something as WRONG as posting as a younger person but I for one understand how twisted the World can be at sometimes and although it is not right in any way whatsoever.. I can't think of a way for TLG to put an end to it..
