just to show our newly appointed city mayor here that i've got more on my mind then legoland space :-P

Besides, some one once asked if it was ok to do reviews of old sets - we all said, please do-, but it seems he never got round to actually do one, so here i go...

i recently picked up this small lego town set. It's a small bicycle repair shop, first released in 1987:

It's what you call "a city substance" set: it's not very big, not all that exciting, but ideal to add to a city that only has a bunch of large houses, a fire station and a police office.

The construction of the building is really typical of the days: one wall at the side, a front wall and just two pillars to support a flat roof with some decorated panels on top of it. In fact, even the yellow slopes on the roof aren't really originel. Lego used those rather often, as a decorative element. I'm not too fond of the colour combination, but i guess they had some left overs lying around after having designed the old airport...

the front wall is made up by red windows, no longer the 4x3 classic windows, but the brand new large ones, again, ideal to build houses and shops . Some even may say it's the start of juniorisation, but i like them a lot... the door isn't really stable without the roof, contrary to the old door that was most of all fixed to the ground plates, but in the case of the news doors... weeeeell... the door just very often fell down before you had the chance to get roof on top of it...

another typical element of any lego building: there's an open backside, allowing small and large hands to get in there ... and it was cheaper that way... to the right you see a blue brick that's supposed to be a cash register and probably some sort of a table to show helmets and things. it's all rather primitive, but hey,... we are talking about 1987! still light years away from R2D2!

at the center you'll most likely be looking at a desk, and there's your repair shop or hall to the left...

I think the set has a lot to offer for 7 pounds: a nice building, 1 bicycle, 2 motorcycles and two minifigs! It's also an ideal combination with a few other sets, also released in the mid 80's, like:

a motor cycle transport

a motorcycle dealer

a motorcycle

another motorcycle transport

the box is surprisingly small of which this is the back side:

god i loved those motorcycles! :-$ they 're a lot smaller than the current version, but it was very popular back then...

Tks Sne for reviving this great era !! Memories memories !!

I loved those bikes *wub* If only my parents didn't give them all away >:-(

I liked the simplicity of those sets !! They were great for kids and for AFOLs who would heavilly modify them !!

I loved the fact that they were small (unlike the oversize sets we have today) !!

Thanks for the review, sne - and bringing back memories ;-)

This set's very simplicity to me is what made "classic" LEGO Town. It reminds me of my 6369 Auto Workhop. Back then walls consisted of five 1x8 (or 1x6) bricks, not one 1x8x5 brick.

I don't have this particular set but from the looks of it I have all the bricks (except the panels - are they printed? *wub* ) to rebuild it.

I don't mind the open backs of these classic sets. Yes, they didn't have a staircase if they were multi-story buildings, and yes, they only had one room per floor with very simplistic interior (at least they had interior), but they were cheap assets to the town and left lots of room for modification, too. Not to put down the nice MOCs you see at exhibition shows nowadays, but I like my city classic-ish (I know, I still owe pictures, I'm working on it).

I like that the building is made mostly of basic pieces...it means its easy to re-create. Pity Lego doesn't make more sets like these...stuff to add variety to a town. I also miss the plain smiling minifigs...sigh...its amazing how now those minifig heads are the rare ones, and now the angry minifig heads are easier to find in sets....dissapointing...

Good job on the review snefroe1.
