LEGO Harry Potter's Hogwarts:

The Great Hall

Hello everyone! In this topic I present my most ambitious MOC, The Great Hall from Hogwarts.

Introduction

It took quite a lot of time to build this MOC. It was a big project, in terms of size, time, effort and money. I first made a "dummy" Great Hall, made of the right bricks but in random colors. After that, I counted all the bricks I needed and ordered them in tan and other colors on Bricklink. As noted before, I am a builder of the past generation. I bought (and recieved) LEGO actively in the 90's and the first half of 2000's. I miss a lot of 'new' pieces, for example the cheese slopes and flesh minifigs.

The construction is pretty good, although the roof is a tad unstable. Also, the tower misses a roof, unfortunately. But all with all, I think this is one of the best MOCs I've made.

Please take a tour:

Here you see a view on the Hall from behind. The well-known windows behind the teachers' table worked out pretty well I think. This is the Great Hall in all of its glory.

Here we see the main entrance to the Great Hall. Those who have read "Hogwarts: A History" (You still haven't?!) or have seen the muggle movies may know that the courtyard in front of the Great Hall only appears from movie 5 on. I however used the Prisoner of Azkaban game (PS2) as a reference (yes I've spent some hours on the back of a hippogriff bumping the walls and roof in the game) and back then the Great Hall ended in this kind of building.

My goal was to copy the Great Hall in LEGO as precise and detailed possible, at least from the outside. That means that the amount of columns for example are the same as in the game and thus, I believe, the same as in the movie. You will, however, notice some (smaller and bigger) flaws here and there. Some missing pieces (picture above). This is also partly due to the fact that this MOC is between a year and two old, and during some movings part fell of or broke down.

An owl's peek through the window. We can see some students at their respective House tables. Although the building is pretty big from the outside (and minifig scale on the outside, as far as I could compare with the game: one column = a person in width, etc.) it is unfortunately way too tight from the inside. This results in the students sitting on the... yes... ground, I know. Shame on me. But never mind, you can't almost see the interior from the outside anyway! :P

Another note: I love Harry Potter LEGO, but I didn't buy/get any sets since Chamber of Secrets. Therefore my minifigs are still yellow! And also therefore I miss some modern pieces like the flames for the torches.

Ron: "Hedwig! Come down! If Harry doesn't let me borrow you anymore I'll have to use Errol! *Sigh*"

On this picture we can see the devestating result of an escaped Blast-Ended Skrewt of Hagrid. The vicious beast climbed up to the tower and set it on fire. Until today, the tower has not been restored yet.

The reality is that I couldn't find the proper roofpieces in the right size, and I was kind of done with this project.

The interior of the Great Hall. We can see that the scale is not completely correct here, but at least it has four walls and a roof, something which most Great Hall MOC's (and official sets) still lack. :)

Ron: "Sorry, no muggle cameras in Hogwarts! I'm afraid you'll have to leave!"

Great MOC! It is very accurate and highly detailed, it looks just like the real thing. I particularly like the window behind the teacher's table.

Very well done. :classic:

This building is bigger than the whole Lego released hogwarts sets! Thats fantastic! Its very accurate and it seems like you got most of the main structures inside.

Amazing work Mr.Brick! I'm not that familiar with the exterior look of the real Great Hall but this one sure looks great! From what I can remember from the movies the interior shot is very accurate too, with all those distinct arches in the ceiling. Very well done!

I'm loving this MOC, I'm just putting the finishing touches on my great hall that will be part of a year long project to build a Hogwarts castle.

Love the interior shot and the entrance hall too. I am doing the same thing with using the games to explore the castle properly. It's surprisingly useful!

out of interest do you have any plans to buildmore of the castle?

It looks quite good from the outside, if just a little repetitive and plain. It's certainly grandiose enough.

However, you should definitely work on the interior some more. For starters, why do the students sit on the floor? And why are the tabletops dark bley instead of brown? You should also add some dishes, candles and flags to give the interior some flair.

Just work on it some more and the result will be great.

Be nice actually to add a few more students in there. Have you got any duplicate figures you could add different heads too?

The way you have seated Harry, Ron and Hermione you could have an owl there bringing harry his first broom from Professor McGonagall. Be a nice little scene, i was thinking of doing this in my one.

Great Work!

This is one of the largest Hogwarts that i have seen so far! I especially like the windows on the back, they are spot on!

Another thing that I really like is the roofing. That's quite a lot of those plates!

Are you planning on finishing Hogwarts any time soon?

Thanks everyone for the reactions! :D As for finishing whole Hogwarts: it was my initial plan, before I started on this one. However, only the Hall took already a lot of time and money, and think of the big tower in the middle (The so-called Grand Staircase Tower)...

Grand_staircase_tower.jpg

It would just be too much.

However, I am considering building Hogwarts in Microscale. That would be realistic and doable. Want to keep all the details in however. So that's one you might see in the following months (yes I'm that slow). :) (PS: Everyone may use this idea, if it's not already used before, if he/she wants to!)

And some other Harry Potter themed MOCs may come too in near future!

Anyway, stay tuned! :-)
