I can trying to create a local database to mess around with. Does LEGO offer an export of all their pieces currently in production? Or I could even start with sets.

I'm not sure that LEGO does, but you can use the pick a brick feature on LEGO.com to find pieces currently in production. I'm sure it's not all of them.

I'd recomend www.bricklink.com for references.

I am aware of bricklink.com and brickset.com. I do not want to steal their data if LEGO has it publicly available.
