ghyde Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 I'm wondering if anyone has publicly available minifig-scale 8-wide truck designs that I could download and use. I'm particularly after a design that has either a forklift on a trailer or a crane arm lifter mounted anywhere on the truckbed itself. I would prefer models that have repositionable crane arms if there are any available. If I decide to use your model (whether part or full) full credit will be given. I'm also wondering if anyone has gathered a repository of information that covers most S.N.O.T. techniques that would be useful for designs of trucks and other vehicles. Cheers ... ghyde Quote
Ricecracker Posted September 16, 2010 Posted September 16, 2010 Are you interested in North American or European types of trucks? I'm from Canada, so when I think of those types of trucks, I think of Mack Granites. As for current models to work off of, check out Ralph's and Chris' models for inspiration, and I shamefully promote my own work as well. Our own KimT created a great guide with many, many advanced building techniques, which you can find here. Quote

I need an oversized trailer and/or truck for this "load" - unless anyone can tell me how to fit a vending machine into a 6 or 7 wide format and still have it hold together this good: The smoke panels in the back were to be for some "internals" but the best photo I could get of them looked closer to a photo of a black cat on a black background in a dark windowless room with no flash! If anyone wonders, I'm BrickVoid, it's a nickname I decided on a while back. Cheers ... ghyde Quote
prateek Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Also, you might want to check out ACCURATEin's city. He has a lot of different styles of 8-wide truck! Quote
ghyde Posted September 17, 2010 Author Posted September 17, 2010 Also, you might want to check out ACCURATEin's city. He has a lot of different styles of 8-wide truck! Does he have them in a set? I looked his username up and followed over to what might have been his photostream, but I couldn't see anything except the oversized 10-wide Ferrari truck and the 8-wide riot van! Cheers ... ghyde Quote
prateek Posted September 17, 2010 Posted September 17, 2010 Then check out his photostream There are a lot of trucks there. Quote

Cheers ... ghyde I've started building the truck but I need some opinions on how it's going so far: Some comments are in the photos, mostly so you get a general idea of where I'm going with the build. If you want to add me as a friend please do! I haven't added anyone to my friends list yet, this is because you all do such wonderful building compared to my amateur efforts. You can either reply to this thread here or add comments to the photos if I've set that right. If not, please let me know here, I'll try to fix it. Cheers ... ghyde Quote
DLuders Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 @ ghyde: If you want some design ideas, I would recommend looking at the Lego DesignByMe Gallery on http://designbyme.lego.com/en-US/Gallery/default.aspx . If you click on the Gallery's dropdown menu for "Vehicles", wait 30 seconds for the Lego Digital Designer (LDD) files to load up, you can find lots of 8-wide trucks. Narrow down your search by typing in "truck", "camion", "trailer", "bus", etc. Note that this gallery rotates its offerings regularly, and it has a limit on how many MOCs appear in one category. The LDD .lxf files can be opened in Lego Digital Designer. It is easy to use, and by looking at the "Building Guide" mode, one can see how it's put together. LDD Manager gives you a Parts List. Lots of folks do their design using LDD's "Lego Universe Mode", then buy the necessary bricks from Bricklink. Quote

But what I really want to know is how does one get it all to go together so it's structurally sound? I might have to revisit that underside with plates and see if I can't get it to go together better somehow. LDD doesn't check models for structural integrity, and neither does LDD Manager AFAIK. I do want some structural integrity in the resulting vehicle, so I can move it around a bit. Cheers ... ghyde Quote

Cheers ... ghyde I didn't reply to this thread before, because I always have a really hard time trying to come up with useful building tips without having seen some pictures of what it is that a builder is doing. Now that I have seen the pictures, I don't really know why you are worried so much about the structural integrity. You've done a very sensible thing: you've used a few longish technic bricks and regular bricks with plates on top and at the bottom holding them together as the basis for your chassis. That's about as strong as it'll get IMO. The gold treasure chests look a bit out of place to me. Trucks might have a tool box on the side, but a fuel tank is much more likely. I don't think I've ever seen anything like a gold treasure chest on a truck. Lego have released a fair few 8-wide trucks. Sets 7998 and 7900, for instance. Peeron doesn't have the instructions for either, but if you google for them you might find them. The Ferrari truck does have a front that is 8 studs wide too. Cheers, Ralph Quote

I might have to revisit that underside with plates and see if I can't get it to go together better somehow. Check out the instructions for 8159, the black/red car from 8898, and 6743. Yes, those are all cars, but the techniques are still valid for trucks. Those models show techniques for making rock-solid wheel housings & lower chassis areas that are able to bear the weight of the rest of the vehicle. I've used those techniques on a bunch of other 8-wide vehicles, including an 8-wide tow truck. The results stand up very well to the rough play of my 2- and 5-year old boys. Quote

I don't think I've ever seen anything like a gold treasure chest on a truck. Well, I wanted my design to be uniquely mine! And nobody said being the first to think of something meant it couldn't be done! As for the structural integrity, it really falls apart at the front of my model. If I try to press too hard on that 1x2 stud area where the 2x6 stud plate is underneath, that plate pops off very easily and without much pressure, making building on it very hard. The Ferrari truck does have a front that is 8 studs wide too. For set 7998 it's available from TLG themselves: http://cache.lego.com/bigdownloads/buildinginstructions/4511984.pdf You can actually find the instructions for set 7900 in a roundabout way from Peeron if you follow the link manually and take the link extension out, and instead go to the www.brickset.com homepage that Peeron refers to and manually search for the number. It would appear that Peeron's links are broken in some way. It turns out they're on lego.com too, in fact! Link here: http://cache.lego.com/bigdownloads/buildinginstructions/4498593.pdf "Not always working, the link is, hmmm? Outdated, mmm? Fix yourself, you must, or succeed in finding you will not!" - Yoda. Cheers ... ghyde Quote
RohanBeckett Posted September 25, 2010 Posted September 25, 2010 Slight thread detour... I just had a look at the instructions for the 7998 truck.. and I'm curious as to what the yellow 3L technic liftarm, used on step 5 does? Occasionally you get that in Lego sets... a part that seems to have no real use, or is placed in a strange way. Sometimes you get 2 pieces, where one larger would have sufficed.. Often, you find out at the end of the build what it was for... or that the 2 pieces have a use in the B-Model (in the case of Creator/Technic sets) But in the 7998 truck.. I really can't see what it's used for! (I don't own the set!) RB Quote
