To celebrate my 1000th post I'm beginning a castle set review series. To begin with they'll be sets I own and chosen based on an extensive vetting process involving my mood.... The idea is to spark off castle based conversation, so please comment, review, adapt into a MOC etc. My goal is to eventually make this template sickeningly familiar so without a long winded rambling introduction (do not look above) here you go:

The Thoughts of the illustrious Norro:

...in under a word per brick...

This was a nice addition to the Crusader line. The two figs make it an excellent army builder and the design itself is simple enough to make even duplicates look good in a scene, serving as extra supply wagons. Lego kindly included a saddle allowing the horse to be incorporated into your calvary and the small hand-full of black pieces dumped in a nearby spare parts bin. I only acquired this set a few years ago and the long wait probably raised my expectations too high but after I got over the small size I realized what a useful, and fun, little utility set this is...

Guest Minifig Comments:

Hello, I'm the soldier riding on the cart in the picture not the sucker walking beside it... What about this set? Well the wagon is comfortable and you sit fairly high off the ground, my only complaint is the lack of a second shield because my friend may need one if the battle gets rough and I'm riding away at high speed for a...erm...strategic redeployment of our mobile forces...

It's So Great I Must Have It Now:

-On Bricklink

-Or some non-lego specific site no one has ever heard of...

Nathan

I really like this set, though unfortunetly, I don't own it.

The Crusaders with the cross axe sign were some of my favorite figures, and this set comes with two. For how small it is, it has a nice supply of parts, and like you noted, is a great army builder.

If it were out today, I'd buy more then one.

Congrats on your 1000th post, BTW. :-)

I'm normally against post counters... but I thought it was a good way to kick off a castle review series...

I actually laughed quite hard at that last line LOL. Damn wagoneers... always have to go for 'strategic redeployment' when the battle gets rough.

N/P. I really like your set reviews by the way - the minifig commentary is a great way to add another perspective to the set! I love it! Keep em coming!

Mr Norro, what do you mean by the line "No I haven't heard of it either..."? Are you referring to this set or something else?

It seemed like a rather obscure set to chose as a first review (leaving out my personal fascination with it) so the subtitle refers to the set...

And what IS your personal fascination with this set Mr Norro?

When I first realized old sets could be tracked down online (pre Brickbay/Bricklink) I set out to find this as it had crossed axe figs (which I didn't at the time) and looked like it couldn't cost much (I am not rich...) It introduced me to the lego that predates my collection...

Predates your collection? You mean you have Knights Kingdom and mid 90's Castle sets, but nothing older till you got this one? Am I following here? Am I? Am I? Am I?

My collection started in 1991 (with a few older sets as they had longer shelf lifes back then...) So yes, this set was the oldest set in my collection (once I aquired it).

1984 was when the Castle theme officially began wasn't it? Obviously there were three sets dating back to the late 70's but they weren't officially grouped as theme under the name of Castle at the time. So this must have been one of the very first Castle sets in the newly formed Castle theme.

Obviously haven't looked it up lately as I'm writing like a rhetorical dill! I'll have to have a look when I've got more time.
