xenologer Posted April 17, 2006 Posted April 17, 2006 I was wondering if anyone knows, do the terms of the StarWars licencing directly specify that Lego cannot build other Space-like sets? I understand that from a marketing standpoint they may not want multiple Space-like sets competing with each other. (actually I dont, I think more is better, but thats what people usually claim) But that aside, I just want to know if it was actually written in stone... Can you show me a reference proving it either way? Trying to solve an annoying discussion at BZPower... I'd hate for them to win... pesky kids... Thanks Quote

X-D they did do "life on Mars" during the sw years, so i don't think there's a clausule excluding Space as long as sw is around... But if you do want a reference, i suggest you call lego and ask for a copy of the contract! Quote
xenologer Posted April 17, 2006 Author Posted April 17, 2006 hmmh I guess its worth a shot I suspect that they probably wont' give me that kinda information though. will see... I was hoping that maybe someone here has heard a public statement from one of the lego ambassadors or whatnot... Quote
xwingyoda Posted April 17, 2006 Posted April 17, 2006 No one apart a very happy few knows the terms of such license !! Here is what we know: * Lucas is very picky concerning sets: just look at all the reeditions of certain sets... (enough said here) * It doesn't prevent other licences (HP, Batman...) nor other Space themes (Life on Mars). Furthermore, seeing how popular the SW licence is, releasing a space theme in direct competition with SW is quite suicidal (unless having a fantastic Space theme like Futuron or Blacktron !!) Lets face it, its very improbable ;-) Hope this helped. *yoda* Quote
Lord Thrawn Posted April 22, 2006 Posted April 22, 2006 It's not good business sense to put out a group of sets from a liscense that rakes in money nicely against a group of original sets that may not, within the same company. One theme would draw the attraction away from the other, and so one would be a waste of money. LEGO doesn't want to make a horrible hash of it, so they don't do secondary space lines. At least, I think this is the official stance. I do realise now that Yoda just said that, but I think this is justified as it expands that point. Quote
