oh the rock raider pieces. They really barely used those. I LOVE that giant glass piece. Actually, I love all giant glass pieces. I really want the old space hulls and glass back.

But what I want most is the old hinges. Honestly I don't care how frail they are, or if it makes stuff more expensive. They just look better, and don't force angles. The huge gaps with new hinges are painful. The piece I want with those hinges is that 2x4 panel. It makes great hatches, doors, window covers, etc.

Oh, and I want that giant blue glass door in the old aqua base set. It was beautiful.

You know, nowadays LEGO is shifting to fewer and fewer click-hinges and more and more clip-and-bar hinges. Clip-and-bar hinges don't force hinges at all, and are even more convenient than the old hinges since any clip or bar piece is compatible. I'm sure it's only a matter of time before LEGO creates new versions of many click-hinge parts to use clip-and-bar hinges instead.

The problem with using clip and bar as hinges is that the clips can't be mounted flush on the bottom of a plate like the old finger hinges can. The clips either have to extend past the edge of the plate (brick, whatever else you are using), creating a gap, or you have to put a 1 x 2 plate to give yourself a space for the clip. You don't always have that kind of room to spare.

The old finger hinges also are good for stud inversions. In the space of one plate height, you can go from studs up to studs down, as long as you have 5 studs of length to play with. I've done that several times in my MOCs. Not nearly as feasable with the click hinges or clip and bar techniques.

I'd LOVE to have the old finger hinges make a return. It probably isn't going ot happen, though.

Excuse me for my ignorance, but what are clip and bar hinges?

Stuff like this, this, this, and this. Don't know if there's a more prevalent term for them-- that's just what I call them, so I guess it's my fault alone for not making that clear.

Good point about the old-style hinges making stud inversions easier, but I never used them for that personally (even though I've seen some epic folding landing gear using them and other hinge pieces), so I guess that's why I don't especially miss them.
