allanp Posted March 1, 2010 Posted March 1, 2010 What is your favorite technic set. Mine has to be the technic off-roader set #8466. BTW what is the biggest technic set ever. Hard to choose between 8868, 8880, 8480 and maybe the test car from 1988. Hmmmmm. They all introduced something new that was interesting. I think maybe 8480 because it was really complex and I loved all the white pieces, oh but then 8868 had lots of pneumatics with it's own compressor, but then the 8880 had a bagillion new parts for 4 wheel everything and the only gearbox to take less than an hour to change gear, but the test car had double wishbone suspention/steering parts.... Sorry. I really can't decide out of those 4 for my favorite set of all time. From the last ten years It's hard to pick between the 8258 crane truck (for a level of complexity not seen for a very long time, probably ever and some nice new parts) and the XXL mobile crane (for it's inclusion of both a buggy motor and at least some complexity and pneumatics, even if the pneumatics were poorly executed in terms of design). The biggest in terms of piececount I think is the XXL mobile crane from 2005. In terms of actual size tho there are some that are bigger and probably heavier too. Quote
JunkstyleGio Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 There is no way i can name just one favorite! Over more than 30 years Lego has given us so many great models. 70's favorite: 852 Helicopter (Simplicity!!!!) 80's favorite: 8848 Power Truck (Love it's tippingunit) 90's favorite: 8858 Rebel Wrecker (Impressive steering and shocks!) 00's favorite: 8260: Tractor (just for being so cute! ) and: Surely every supercar 8880, 8848, 8466, 853. 8865 and 8860. and of course every other model that i ever built! grepin Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 Out of the ones I currently own, and splitting them by size, my favourites are: Large sets: - 8880 (best super car ever released) - 8868 (most complex pneumatic set, on par with 8455) Medium sets: - 8862 (the first Technic backhoe) - 8858 (best 4x4 for its size) - 8856 (best Technic helicopter) - 8854 (fully featured and compact mobile crane) - 8439 (best pneumatic loader) - 8420 (stunning motorbike) Small sets: - 8838 (iirc, the first fully featured motorcycle) - 8837 (cute pneumatic excavator :P) - 8412 (sort of a 'light' version of the 8856) Sadly, this obviously excludes any sets I don't (still) own, not to mention I'm not considering the (many) sets in my collection that are still unassembled due to my lack of time to build them. CP5670 Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 8868, followed closely by 8455 and 8480. Out of the pneumatic sets, 8455 is more complex than 8868, but I would give 8868 the nod due to its compressor and great alternate model. Quote
GT-Vince Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 The 8421 Mobile Crane and the 8275 Motorized Bulldozer, unfortunatly I don't own a supercar set. I'm still trying to get hold of one at a reasonable price. But the 8258 Crane Truck is a very cool model also, even with it's minor flaws. Those are my top 3 Quote
cbt Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 Well, even as an age 40+ AFOL I prefer the newer studless Technic sets over any of the nostalgic studded oldschool type of pre-2001 Expert Builder/Technic models. Can't hide that I'm so much into New Style Technic that my all-time favorite might as well be a future model that the world haven't even seen yet, and that I prefer to be looking forward - in stead of being retrospective when this type of questions comes up. Perhaps a future Super Car becomes my all-time favorite - if there will ever again be such a Super Car model in future. Anyways, if I were to point out a current all-time favorite, it must be the #8284 Technic Tractor. This model is designed so brilliantly and it's so suitable for various modifications and for rebuilding - and it encouraged me to fulfil an old dream of building Technic Tractor MOCs (you can look them up at Brickshelf). Interesting choice. I just surfed on over to your Brickshelf folder and looked at the mods you made to 8284. I really like the extra implements you made for it! I'd like to be able to add them to my own copy. You certainly seem to have an interest in farm equipment and have built an impressive array of tractors and other related stuff. My favorites are the Case IH-STX, the John Deere 2140, and the Bulldog D-1706. Nice work! You should consider starting a thread on this forum to show off some of your creations. Ronan Dragonov Posted March 2, 2010 Posted March 2, 2010 Without question my favorite technic set is the 8480 Space Shuttle - lots of Technic action from landing gear to payload bay doors. Plus it features a secondary submarine build (the main reason I originally got the set) - not too many of those in Technic. Quote

Actually, I'm an engineer too, and yes, I do have an interest in agricultural equipment, as well as in construction vehichles, trucks and cars. However, my #1 hobby is not LEGO Technic, but model trains (H0 DC) - LEGO Technic is "only" my #2. I do show off my Technic models online - however, it's in Danish. You can find it all on the Danish LUG site called Byggepladen by searching for 'Dieselund' (use the 'Søg' button in the top right corner), and perhaps use the Google translation. (You can find a search link here). For instance, 'Dieselund Maskinstation' means 'Diesel Valley Machine Pool' - the owner of all the farm equipment and a great customer of my Technic Workshop. Well, it’s all just aliases for myself, however, Technic Workshop is the name of my BrickLink shop too. I enjoyed reading your reviews long before I signed up on EB, and I would just like to say keep up the good work, Eric . Well, sorry, this was all a bit off-topic. Let's get back on topic again.
