edit: sorry about the title getting cut off, didn't realize that would happen.

I got a nice $75 gift card for Lego shop at home, plus I've managed to put together $75 cash. I was planning on getting the Crane Truck, but it's "sold out" and I'm not sure if they'll be getting any more in stock anytime soon.

So, what to do? I'm an AFOL who recently got all my Lego back out (after attending BrickCon in Seattle). The last big set I got was 8865 Test Car, from my parents on what was the most glorious Christmas to date. I've got some older pneumatics (8862 backhoe grader, 8854 power crane). I also recently picked up the 8262 Quad-Bike, 8263 snow groomer, and 8259 mini bulldozer.

I'd love to mess around with power functions, the new differentials, some bigger wheels/tires, the linear actuators, the newer vehicle suspension pieces, etc. Eventually I'd like to build a remote-control vehicle moc of some sort.

At this point I'm looking at the 8466 off-roader, the 8265 front loader, the tractor with trailer, the race truck, basically all the big stuff still available from TLG online. Then I'll take whatever cash is left over and get additional power functions stuff, maybe some actuators or suspension bits or whatever from bricklink.

What combo of sets/parts would you get in my situation? Any hidden gems parts-wise or build-wise in the sets I could get?

This is a problem, but it's a great problem to have!

The 8258 Crane Truck is the best option. May you could sent an email to LEGO asking them if this model is coming on stock again. If not i would think the 8265 Front Loader is an awsome model. But remember this: I definately needs the 8293 PF motor set!

Good luck in hunting for something great.

And keep us informed on your adventures!

I would send Lego an email you have a very good chance of getting a good reply. The crane truck is an 2009 H2 set so its only been around 6 months, there is virtually no chance it is gone for good, just out of stock, until the next shippment arrives (this often happens to the popular Models!). If not, as suggested the front loaded is great! and if you do go down this route start saving Now for july.. The new Excavator (2010 H2) set looks awesome! and appears to be fully Remote controlled, just like the bulldozer from a couple of years ago, But it will cost more than the crane truck! and the mobile crane looks good too so this summer will be expensive!

You are trying to find 8466 on S@H? I guess you are meaning the 8297 Off-roader, which in my opinion is way inferior to the 8466 Off-roader from 2001. Or are you planning to buy the 8466 on Ebay? If not, I would recommend the 8265 Front loader over the 8297 Off-roader.

I would hold out for the Crane Truck if there is no expiry date on the gift certificate and more stock is coming to S@H. Otherwise, the front loader looks good.

How about 8041 and 8265? I just placed on order for both of them and another set (total of $200).

I purchased 8258 and tractor last week too. 8258 is gone for good in my areas. I am glad that I got mine.

Anyways, contact them! They've been very helpful and probably the best customer service out there (to me at least).

Yeah, you're exactly right, I meant the 8297 off roader. Got the numbers mixed up. I'll send Lego an email and see what's up.

I think the crane truck looks brilliant, but I was wondering if there wasn't a way to get some of that playability and specific parts without getting that set specifically.

The fact that it makes a good model of a crane truck isn't what's most important to me. Rather, I'd like to see how some of the new-to-me parts are used in a model, how things are put together. That's why I though maybe getting something smaller, like the loader, then adding PF parts and stuff from bricklink might make sense for building mocs and figuring out how the parts work together. I haven't done anything with the linear actuators, any PF stuff, and things like the drive rings for shifting gears are all new to me.

So, even though off-roader might not be a great model in it's own right, I thought perhaps it had nice parts, and already came with some PF. With that in mind is the front loader (or something else) still a better way to get what I'm after? Thanks.

If you are waiting for LegoShopAtHome.com to restock the Set #8258 Crane Truck, you my be waiting for a while. Recommend downloading the Peeron.com parts inventory for the set at http://peeron.com/inv/sets/8258-1 , seeing what new parts are there, and ordering them from Bricklink.com with your $75 in cash. It doesn't make much sense to pay $150+ for a set if you're not specifically interested in building a Crane Truck per se. Save the Lego $75 coupon for a 2010 set. I'm not sure where JimmyTheFly lives, but there are two sealed #8258 sets available from Bricklink sellers in Germany for $130 (see http://www.bricklink.com/search.asp?q=8258 ). The ones for sale on eBay are selling for ~$200 (see http://shop.ebay.com/?_from=R40&_trksi...-All-Categories ).

+shipping which is another 50 bucks or so.

You will be paying at least $200 (including shipping). I'd look out for ebay/BL unless they stock them more in future.

That $130 seller is also using a bogus exchange rate, so the actual price you pay will be quite a bit higher.

In any case, if you're mainly interested in the parts, 8265 is probably the best choice. Its price is fairly low considering how much stuff it comes with, and you can always get the PF elements individually or though 8293. Both 8265 and 8258 are much better sets than 8297, even just for parts and especially if you want to understand the mechanisms.

Yes that makes sense! there are three Linear Actuators in the loader none two in the truck, there is also a driving ring mechanism in both the only thing I can think of that is in the truck and not in the loader is a motor, (which as you say you can get seperatly) Oh also the outriggers that uses a new rack part but its not a very good design.. there is also a clever turntable mechanism in the truck, where two drives are passed through the centre of rotation. but you can read all about that on sites like technicbricks http://www.technicbricks.blogspot.com/ or they older but still very good site of Jennifer Clark http://www.genuinemodels.com/

If you have not used studless before it is very different to the old technic - a tip to remember is that beams connect only in one dimension so you need to use plenty of joiner pieces (small multidimensional parts) you cant just stick beams together like the old stuff!

If you mean the 8258 with the truck, there are two linear actuators in it.

your right I had a 'stupid attack'!

I went and got the Front Loader, thanks for the advice, everybody!

Last night I got through instruction book 1 of 3, I'm looking forward to finishing it up tonight. Also, I'm going to order some PF parts today, and maybe a few things from bricklink.

dr_spock, thanks for the link to downloadable building instructions, that'll help with my investigations.
