Anyone remember the lego technic club?

I was a member for a while when I was younger. I know I was a member in 1996 because I remember a club magazine which showcased the (new) 8480 space shuttle. It was a great article which included a QnA section with the designer of the shuttle. Here he mentioned that he had worked (or was working on) a 5/6 speed gearbox which I assume was the one in the 8448 of 1999. Does anybody remember this club? Does anybody know where I can find copies/scans of the magazines?

I remember when I was a kid seeing ad's for this in my ELGO instructions and LEGO magazines. I wasn't a member and unfortunetlay don't have any real useful info for you, but I remember!

Is it the gearbox design you want, I have used the design from 8466 in a couple of models, easy enough to copy and not hard to remove the diff if you dont need it, the scans are I think on Peeron and Brickfactory when its up again.

Oh no sorry. I know how to build the gearbox and have designed better ones. It is the actual magazine(s) or scans of them that I am trying to find. There was alot of interesting stuff in there. Thanks for the fast reply tho :classic:

Ah well at least I didn't dream it then

Deep dark ages for me that was. Didn't even know it existed, but now that you have mentioned it I sure would love to see some scans...

I didn't know there was a separate Technic club at that point. I had subscribed to the general Lego club and still have the Mania magazines from that period.

My dragonfly was featured in the mag, I think it was in September 1996.

They ran a competition to use 2 of each of the pieces in the picture and any other Technic parts (but no more beams or plates).

The model that won broke all the rules but was by someone in the target age group of 7-11 even though the comp was open to all ages :sceptic:

My dragonfly could walk, had 2 motors and 761 parts. I supplied the list :classic:

Since the liked it, they decided to feature it in the next issue after the comp results.

Unfortunately several toggle joint parts got broken in the post (a courier took it from my house to Wrexham and back), but TLG replaced the ones I noticed on the model's return.

I rebuilt the dragonfly at Billund in February 2007, adding flapping wings, with PF medium motors as the power devices.

IMHO it was a better mag than the regular mag - a bit less hype and more technical detail. I still have a couple of the T-shirts.

There were some great trucks in there - a chap from Sheffield, UK who had 3 kids. Wonder what happened to him and whether he's still involved in the community.

Was your dragonfly black and blue by any chance? If so I think I remember it. It was a great model.

Yes I remember that family, think it was the Ozyerky family or something like that. I remember there was a big, yellow helicopter, a 3 axle crane using the 8880 wheels and a landrover discovery type vehicle which also used the 8880 wheels.

I also much prefered this mag to the regular one. It did indeed have less hype and more technical stuff in it. I think iv'e still got a calculator from it somewhere. I did have a few t-shirts I think, well at least one anyway.
