Hello Pirate fans :pir-grin:

I have come into possesion of a book about Pirates (The non LEGO kind :pir-oh: ) and it holds many facts about pirates most people might not know. I shall share some with you:

1) The main source of fresh meat for Pirates was sea turtles. They were easy to kill or catch because they are, well... slow.

2) The Knights of Malta were Corsairs (mediterranean privateers) who attacked barbary vessels in North africa.

3) English privateers had to hold a letter of marque or reprisals to be considered actual privateers, and not pirates.

4) Bucaneers are said to have invented the cutlass. It was said to have been origanally used to cut meat.

5) On a successful attack, an average crewman could become filthy rich! But most would spend there fortune on drinking, gambling and woman!

6) French corsairs sometimes through tiny spikes on the enemy ship. And since most sailors were barefoot, it would cause painfull damage :pir-skull:

I hope some of these facts might inspire you to pirate MoC glory :pir-classic:

Edit: New facts

7) Mary Read and Anne Bony were two famous woman pirates. They both served in the crew of "Calico" Jack Racham.

8) Despite the popular-culture depiction of the "Cabin Boy", boys under 16 were not allowed on most pirate ships.

9) Despite the value of spices in Europe, if a pirate crew captured a East-India company ship, they would dump them as they would be hard to sell.

I never would have thought about pirates eating sea turtles but it is pretty logical when you don't have much meat.

The cutlass was designed to cut meat........... human meat.

That is wrong. Imagine if you were chasing a sea turtle that escaped the net and stepped on one of those spikes.

What is the name of the book?

I thought Pirates used sea turles to escape from islands which they'd been marooned on. :pir-grin:

Actually, bucaneers started out as hunters on the island of Hispanola (mordern Haiti) after the spanish abonded the colony there. They would use it to cut the wild pig and cow meat into fine strips (Mmm, bacon :pir_laugh2: )

What be the name of this book?

It's part of this series called "Eyewitness". Methinks they were designed for students grades 7-10, but hey! It gives information that wikipedia doesn't have :pir-grin:

Crow's feet - 4-pointed twists of sharpened wire. These date back as far as Roman times, when they were used to great effect against cavalry. I've tried making these using minifig hands, but to no avail so far...

I also recall that, in tropical waters, crews would fill pots with poisonous snakes and throw them aboard another ship, whence they would break, throwing angry snakes everywhere, causing chaos. I believe Hannibal came up with this method.

Very interesting facts I didn't know! Thanks for the information!

For what else should they've spent money as for entertainment and alcohol? There didn't exist many ways to place funds! And I'm sure sea turtles are a delicacy. So it wasn't necessary to buy food. :pir-grin:

I'm very surprised how creative pirates were to antagonise their victims!!

No, they were the main dish. Along with fish, hardtack, and dryed meats.

Yes, of course, made a little joke... :pir-classic:

It seems they weren’t interested in varied dishes or it was very difficult for them or something like that.

But thanks for information!
