snefroe Posted December 13, 2005 Posted December 13, 2005 hm... price is kinda low, tho, only 31 Quote
crispen Posted December 13, 2005 Posted December 13, 2005 i think it stinks. it is ugly to me. oh well.... :) Quote
snefroe Posted December 13, 2005 Posted December 13, 2005 Yah its nothing fantastic well... it's from a different era, obviously.... sure, it doesn't look that spectacular.... Quote
KimT Posted December 13, 2005 Posted December 13, 2005 i think it stinks. it is ugly to me. oh well.... :) Remember this train is from the old school days - back in the 70's - doubting You were even born. I like it - makes me think of my own childhood. I've got the 725 Electric DB Train from 1976 (I think) - It might not be pretty by modern standards - but I was born that year so it means something special to me. The same could go for this train - so watch it when You diss ;) KimT Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted December 14, 2005 Governor Posted December 14, 2005 i think it stinks. it is ugly to me. oh well.... :) Yeah... I agree... It wouldn't work with Western theme at all - would it? Quote
WesternOutlaw Posted December 14, 2005 Posted December 14, 2005 You have to consider the part selection back then. For the time, I think it's a neat set. I would love to see Lego design a detailed steam engine from the 1800s now. It would be a great set. I had a 725 back in the 70s too KimT - a gift purchased in Germany; but unfortunately, would not work in the US with the power difference. We took it back to the store and I purchased a Classic Yellow Castle instead. I still have it in fact. OK, I'm reminiscing now... Quote
WesternOutlaw Posted December 14, 2005 Posted December 14, 2005 Check out this old Western set from 1977. This was called Texas Rangers and would have gone nicely with this train: Quote
Starwars4J Posted December 14, 2005 Posted December 14, 2005 Check out this old Western set from 1977. This was called Texas Rangers and would have gone nicely with this train: I've...never seen a set like that. Those horses are old (I have four from the Yellow Castle), but the figs have no faces or arms...and yet those detailed (relatively) hats? strange...strange Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted December 14, 2005 Governor Posted December 14, 2005 Are those horses single pieces or are they made from several smaller pieces? Quote
Hobbes Posted December 14, 2005 Author Posted December 14, 2005 Are those horses single pieces or are they made from several smaller pieces? The latter. Back then everything had to be built, even animals ;) Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted December 14, 2005 Governor Posted December 14, 2005 No wonder LEGO's slogan was "Just imagine..." for years... :D Quote
Hobbes Posted December 14, 2005 Author Posted December 14, 2005 No wonder LEGO's slogan was "Just imagine..." for years... :D Even if you put a smilie at the end of your comment - you're soooo right. Today it's more like "Just imagine... what this new <insert that tiresome argument> piece could be..."... Quote
WesternOutlaw Posted December 14, 2005 Posted December 14, 2005 Take a look at the horse legs closely. They are in fact early minifig legs. This was not the case with the horses that came with the yellow castle made from 1x2 bricks and plates. The hats seem to be the same as modern hats. Some pieces haven't changed over the years. In looking at all these older sets, you have to appreciate the fact that they were mostly made from standard bricks as opposed to all the new specialized pieces. Pretty neat. Quote

Cool :) In looking at all these older sets, you have to appreciate the fact that they were mostly made from standard bricks as opposed to all the new specialized pieces. Pretty neat. I'll go and reminisce for a while... Quote

Today it's more like "Just imagine... what this new <insert that tiresome argument> piece could be..."... Don't get me started about pieces today! Juniorisation to a certain degree isn't a bad thing, like in the case of LEGO horses. I think they look much better than the ones built from smaller pieces. Quote
snefroe Posted December 14, 2005 Posted December 14, 2005 i have a few sets with these old minifigs; true none of them was very spectacular, but what makes them vital is the fact that they paved the way for the real MF-world; it's not really fair to judge these sets based on what we can do with lego anno 2005. back in those these days i was already very impressed by the old fire truck and its yellow ladder, the black police boat,... i also don't think they had a slogan back then Quote

I still love 'em. Catalog pages like the following are still heaven to me: 1978 NL Page 8 and following (at least to page 14) *wub* Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted December 14, 2005 Governor Posted December 14, 2005 Nobody said LEGO had a slogan back when this set was released :D LEGO started with "Only the best is good enough" so when did they drop that? And when did "Just imagine..." take over? Quote
Hobbes Posted December 14, 2005 Author Posted December 14, 2005 LEGO started with "Only the best is good enough" so when did they drop that? Sometime in the past. And when did "Just imagine..." take over? After that. Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted December 14, 2005 Governor Posted December 14, 2005 And how do you now this young Hobbet? Quote

And when did "Just imagine..." take over? hold on... i just checked the catalog index and it seems lego had another slogan in the late 70's in belgium anyway: Lego, elke dag weer nieuws en anders!", meaning: "Lego, every day something new and different." started in 1975 ended in 1978 or so...
