Starwars4J Posted November 23, 2005 Posted November 23, 2005 Well, I finally got the package today from Amazon, along with the Ambulance, but since that review was done anyway, I'll get to the Gate Set ;) First some general comments. This is, in my opinoin, a great piece set! It comes with all sorts of useful black and dark red pieces. One of these pieces was new to me. Anyone else see this before? I apologize for any blurriness in the pictures, my hand isn't the sturdiest around...which is partly why I didn't want to go into surgery ;) Also, I dislike the decals, so the review won't have them (though you can always see pictures of them with the decals if you guys really want). Anyway, on with the review! For $30US, the set more than breaks the price:parts barrier, with 402 pieces at just over $0.0746US/piece! It comes with two humans, and three robots The red hair piece is actually great, but the black one struggles just to fit on, looks terrible, and doesn't even hide the second face! The set comes with three vehicles (two mechs, and a tank-ish-thingy) First is the human mech If there's one thing I can say about these mechs, it's the wonderful amount of flexibility! Although it lacks any sort of controls...it can still move in many different ways. First the legs have three joints (ankle, knee, and hip), and the legs can move side to side as well (pictured in the droid mech). The arms can move back and forth, and also up and down, providing a fo-ball-joint illusion. The <insert that tiresome argument> shoulder pieces really don't take away from it at all. The human mech uses milky-silver droid arms for its three fingers, and thumb. The other arm has...I assume a missile launcher and ammunitions pack? Also note two transparent "wings" coming off the back Next is the droid mech! This is my favorite mech, not only does it have controls, but it just looks cooler ;) It has the same range of motion as the human mech, but features a pair of heavy guns for one arm, and a pair of missiles for the other. It also has a "shoulder" missile launcher. The third and final vehicle is the "tank" This actually isn't too bad. While there are no rel controls of any sort, they're droids, I guess they don't need any :D It features a "driver", and a "gunner". The gunner operates a large machine gun of sorts that can rotate 360 degrees, as well as up and down (albeit limited). Finally comes THE GATE It's actually very simple. It features a pair of doors that open back, a missile launcher on the gate, and a gunner also on the gate (ugh...that hair again). On the front of each door of the gate are also cameras I guess... Hidden in the back is the larger missile launcher Which is just the standard, activated by a very simple mechanism Overall, I'd give it: Figs: 8/10 Pieces: 9/10 Set: 10/10 Playability: 9/10 Overall: 9/10 Maybe an extra fig or two wouldn't have hurt, and while I hate the black hair (which is the one I looked forward to most!), the body on the tech is amazing! Definitely pick if up if you get the chance, it's a more than decent parts set, though I'm probably not gonna keep the base, just take it apart for some pieces. And finally, a group picture! Imperial trechary! You'll find no old grey in there, Phes! Gallery when public: http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=155053 Quote
Ecto Posted November 23, 2005 Posted November 23, 2005 Is that Phes i see hiding in the gate? :P Very cool set. I love the hair. So hurtuponable. :P Quote
The Middleman Posted November 23, 2005 Posted November 23, 2005 Thanks for the review! Tip for next time - please resize your pictures. It really hurts the people with slow connections, and generally makes the pics harder to see. After seeing it up close, I've decided not to pick this up. Quote

KMOI Posted November 23, 2005 Posted November 23, 2005 The image surgeon is here! And because it's that time of year again, this operation is for free. :-D That and the fact that my country has free medicare. But we get uber-high taxes, which is why I will *never* again import anything from Asia again. |-/ As you can tell, my Gundam habit is really suffering. Well aside from my little rant, I actually do have something to say. It's quite a nice set considering the price tag. I really love the Mechs, because they're like mini-versions of all the larger mechs. I really would buy it if I had more time on my hands, because that hair could make some serious Kingdom Hearts Minifigs. And that set looks plain awesome. I love those mechs. The gate is ok, but I tell ya, it's the figs and the mechs that make this set. However, because I feel that competitive spirit coming on, I feel an urge to finish off my own personal minifig "hardsuit" (Not coming to a store near you). Thanks for the pics and the time! This is a definate pick-up for all kids this Christmas. Anyhoo, here are the pics with their original titles: "It comes with two humans, and three robots" "First is the human mech" "Next is the droid mech!" (The one he likes. ^_^) "The third and final vehicle is the "tank"" "Finally comes THE GATE" (NOTE: I only resized the main pic. I'm short on time here, because the sleep beckons me) "Hidden in the back is the larger missile launcher" "And finally, a group picture!" Quote
Starwars4J Posted November 23, 2005 Author Posted November 23, 2005 Ah! Thank you so much, I'll go back and edit it all :-D What'd you use by the way? Photoshop? And yes, I am horribly n00bish at both editing pictures, and reviews ;) Quote
KMOI Posted November 23, 2005 Posted November 23, 2005 Bah! Bah humbug to Photoshop! Heh, actually, I love Photoshop. :-D But for the resizing you see here, I used Microsoft Picture it! because I feel it has a superiorily easy way to rezie the pics. Oh so easy. I use if for all of my own pics when I sometimes botch photos to change the lighting. And your review was awesome, don't be told otherwise! Also, if you have a Sony Cybershot camera, you might want to take the pictures in smaller size by simply changing the size of the photo to "e-mail" before you snap away. It allows to take smaller pictures, yet almost the same, or better quality. Why? Because as Martha says, Also made in Picture it. :-D Quote

I leave my camera on highest setting for all pictures I take (old advice from my uncle who's an amateur photographer). He says to do that in case I ever want to make a print of something I take, but I guess I just forgot to adjust the size. I'll have to remember that for future pictures I take, though it'll be awhile before I get another set that hasn't already been reviewed! Well...maybe for the Star Wars ones ;) And again, thanks for the resizes, and the advice! Quote
optimus-convoy Posted November 23, 2005 Posted November 23, 2005 Glad to see some out of box pics. Nice review & photos, looks like a great set. I have to get it! Quote
languages Posted November 23, 2005 Posted November 23, 2005 Thanks for the review, I doubt I will be getting this set.... Quote
snefroe Posted November 23, 2005 Posted November 23, 2005 thanks for the review! I think it's crap Quote
xwingyoda Posted November 23, 2005 Posted November 23, 2005 Tks Starwars4J for your review ;) I love the mfs, the mechas (my only grip concerning the white mech is the looking of the front - too "normal" hehe) and the "tank". The gate defense mechanism look sweet also !!! However I think that the gate could have been bigger but overall its a great set that will definitly be added to my collection :oD Quote

However I think that the gate could have been bigger but overall its a great set that will definitly be added to my collection :oD It looks a little better with the decals ;) But as of yet, I'm not sure what I'll keep, and what I'll use for parts (like the base), so I left them off. The stickers make them look a lot better, however not if you want to use the pieces for something else! Also, keep in mind, for a $30 set, the two mechs will have to be pretty small. Personally, I like the set for the pieces, and the robot mech, but the one I'm really looking forward to is the human fiberoptics mech Quote
SuvieD Posted November 23, 2005 Posted November 23, 2005 I would like to make a picture request. The box in the background takes away too much for me. Could you take a few pictures of just the hair pieces or put them on a plainer figure? Also. a picture of one of the robots completely dismantled so we can see how they are put together. Finally, can you take any new pictures on a white piece of paper with another piece in the background or if you don't have any something close to white. It makes pictures much easier to see detail on. Just a tip for your blurryness, when you take a photo of something small like LEGO build a box out of bricks and plcae the camera on top of it. That way it will be steady and you can adjust the height easily. You may also want to either move the camera back and then crop your photos later (easy to do), or add move lighting (indirect if possible) or both to improve camera focus and detail captured. If you need help for any of this just say so. Thanks Starwars4J I already decided I am getting this set as soon as it comes out. Your picture review makes me want to get two! Quote
MattZitron Posted November 23, 2005 Posted November 23, 2005 Nice pics, glad I've got these on the way! Do the Robot fig's legs move? Quote
blueandwhite Posted November 23, 2005 Posted November 23, 2005 Thank goodness! Am I correct in surmising that all of the markings are produced via sticker? If that's the case, then a few of these sets might be ok as parts-packs. Not my cup of tea, but I suspect that the younger crowd will love these. Later. Quote
xwingyoda Posted November 23, 2005 Posted November 23, 2005 and the older crowd as well ;) I'm 30 and I loved to watch all those great animes as a kid such as Captain Harlock, Saint Seya, Goldorak, Ulysse 31 (...). I was so pleased about those sets !!! I'm gonna catch them all :D :P On a side note: darn you TLC for all those stickers :^D Quote

xwingyoda Posted November 23, 2005 Posted November 23, 2005 Another pic tip: the best way to take pics of MFs is like I do: I pose my digital cam on the table and use the micro option: this way you have a clean close up shot ;) (hope this helps). Tks for taking more cool pics ;) Quote
sam89 Posted November 23, 2005 Posted November 23, 2005 Thanks for the pics. I really like both of the Mechs, and I like the way the front of the Tank resembles the Robots' heads! The only thing I don't really like is that the mechanism sticks too far back away from gate, so it would take up too much room. But this section could easily be removed I supose. Quote
KimT Posted November 23, 2005 Posted November 23, 2005 Love the minifigs - especially the hair on the humans - also the mech figs are awesome *wub* I think I'll be into that Exo-Force after all - the set needs a little modifications - but don't they always ;) KimT Quote
Da Moon Posted November 24, 2005 Posted November 24, 2005 Hello, Great review ! Thanks. Could you take a picture of the box's back ? And one question : This set have an alternate model ? Quote

So do the Robot Minifigs have moveable legs? Yes, they snap onto a round cylinder, sort of like the arms on the super battle droids. The legs are very wide at the base though, so they can't "walk" well Quote
