martinsuper Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 OK, got a couple MOC building questions that I want to ask you, wise and expierenced noble men and women... When you are building a MOC, and there are interior parts that people won't see, or that make up the walls, etc... Do you use just any color you have? Or do you stick to your colors inside and out? For instance, if we took apart your MOC, would it look like a rainbow inside? Or would a greay fort be grey inside as well? I only ask the first questions because some times there are parts shortages. Second question At which point do you look lustfully at an original set for parts? I have the big ninja fortress and I have been eyeing that puppy for a while now for the parts I need. There are a lot of very nice black slopes, panel slops, and wall panels in there that could be easily used. How serious are you about keeping non-pirate sets together? I know in the end it will be up to me on both of these questions, but Im just trying to get a feel for what the rest of you think. As always, thanks for the input, -Super Quote

As always, thanks for the input, -Super Currently I'm building ym first ever ship, not for Pirates but for Castle, as a sort of pre-modern ferry. In order to do that I've tore apart my Medieval Market Village layout, which took many months, but I always felt there were weak points in it and because I was building from dawn 'till dusk I didn't really give a damn, lol.\ As for colors, I fill the insides with a lot of stuff, and for structures like the inside of the ship or my WIP Spirit Of Fire down in other Themes, I use lots of Technic. Guss Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 (edited) Do you use just any color you have? for the structure, that is not supposed to be seen, I use the colours I'm not going to use anywhere else "save" pieces for the parts that will be seen. I just keep destroying things....especially sets, the only set that remains entire for more than 3 days was the Brickbeard bounty, then I destroyed it to build "l'indomptable", a ship I presented here. Even my mocs never lives long, there is only one moc I kept "entire" , and it's just because it's made with parts I don't need for my actual mocs ( that's this one : here ) To me, lego are made to build and build and build more, so I just keep destroying things, and I love to destroy things, especially when It was hard to build ( I loved to destroy "l'indomptable" ).. well, maybe I'm a little weird.. Wow, really? Well I guess I am a pack-rat. I still have all of my original pirate sets together. The most I will do with the new sets is modify BB to go into redcoat service. I will also modify soldier's fort to be the same height as my docks. But destroying is so hard for me! Especially when I'm trying to fill a port with so many different items! Maybe I will always be poor, buying bricks non-stop?! But I guess the ninja fortress has its days numbered... I just need too many of those pieces so after all my sorting is done for this week, it will probably meet the ax! -Super Quote
RocketSeason Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 I can't keep official sets together for very long. mostly because I buy them for a few specific parts that I am using for a particular MOC. as far as interiors go. If I am making a ship or a building, it always has lift out sections and viewable features. The playability is what makes LEGO so special for me. Quote
Captain Blackmoor Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 Well, I like to build an interior in a building as well, why should you leave the inside ugly while you've put so much effort in the outside? I just don't like the feeling that I know my buildings are ugly from the inside. And I'm a pack rat as well, since I rarely demolish something, I'd rather upgrade it for the better. If I demolish a nice MOC I'm always wondering if I could build something like that again. Quote
Erdbeereis Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 I only use different colors for the non-visible parts if I know that I'll need all of the main color as I can get. I used to keep almost all sets together, but now I take most apart including pirate sets. The pieces just stare at me and I think the main value of buying a set is to get the good pieces out of it. The only lines of sets I keep together at the moment are Star Wars, City and Indiana Jones, but who knows, I may take those apart too someday. Getting the great pieces from sets is always really fun for me. Quote
Eilif Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 1) If no one's going to see it, I don't worry too much. Usually it's not so much different colors, as irregular walls. However, I've been doing more and more interiors recently, so I've been more carefull to make interior walls even, in case I decide to make an interior later. 2) Sets of any kind only last as long as I don't need the pieces for a MOC. I have a couple of favorite sets that may stay on my shelf for over a year, but the majority of them are only one MOC away from ruthless disassembly. Quote
Derfel Cadarn Posted April 16, 2009 Posted April 16, 2009 It all depends on interior or not. If im building a moc that can be viewed from all angles and inside, then i will stick with the same colours or pieces, or sometimes build another colour inside for interior. But if ive built a house that will only be seen from front views, then i usually build the back all in black pieces. As for raiding sets for parts, all the sets i own have all been dismantled and the pieces put in seperate colour coded boxes. I never use sets in mocs because the've allready been designed and made by someone Nowadays i dont even build the sets when i buy them, i just seperate the pieces. I did build the medievil market place, put took it apart the same day. Nice model, but theres so many better things you can do with the pieces. But thats me, its all down to the individual Quote
martinsuper Posted April 16, 2009 Author Posted April 16, 2009 In my latest project Im trying to mix in some pirate sets with my MOCs and make them look like they actually go together. This often requires some minor modifications of the original set to make it "blend in" better. I think I will take apart the ninja fortress, wild west gold mine, and wolfpack fortress. There are also a lot of BURP and LURP in those, and who doesnt like BURP and LURP, right?!
