Hi, I am in need of tips, tricks and advice. Here's a link to the page, explaining the project. Already I've had some advice, most notably from Saint and VBBN, but, I turn to you, General Discussion readers, for advice.

I'M STUCK!!!

And I haven't even started. If you clikety-clicked the link you'll see what I'm trying to build. The problem is, where do I start?

Obviously I need to first build some kind of technic framework. However, which bit shall I build? It's minifigure scale, so whatever part I pick to do first will be massive anyway. I was thinking maybe the engine, the hardest part to see, therefor the easiest to imagine. Also, it's the least desirable part I want to do, and if I do it first, I'd be obliged to carry on and finish the project rather than having a huge engine sitting around all day, failing you all, then breaking it up and feeling sorry for myself.

So, dear readers, its up to you! See poll above and for Lego's sake, vote! I'm desperate!

Personally, I say go for the bulk of the ship, the part that is mostly the same. Then, once you are done that, you can have fun filling in all the smaller details.

I agree, I think you should do the main bulk of the ship first. Then it will make the rest easier as you will also have a better feel of the size proportions needed for the rest of the ship. If not you may end up making the engines far bigger than you wanted and not be able to cope or you could make the front to small for how big the main size is.

Cheers guys.

That makes it pretty easy to chop it all up into "modules now", connected by a technic-pin locking mechanism.

Yeah. Try saying that when your stoned. Yeah.

Looking at the massive version of that picture currently on my computers "desktop", I'm saying the main bulk of the ship is from where the two circular markings are 'till where it starts to say Spirit Of Fire.

Oh Boy.

Well, the first thing I'm going to do, is draw plans. Then, separate all my Dark Bley and other similar colors taht I'll need into a big tub. Then spend loads of cash on even more Dark Bley, until I have probably amassed a 20-year budget of washing cars and mowing the lawn.

Oh Boy.

I reckon this area will be conjoined with the neck (from the lettering 'till the command decks and stuff), allowing for a little bit more space. That way, a good 1/3 of the main bulk can be the vehicle bay, then the rest can be living quarters, kitchens, all that jazz. I estimate the whole thing to be the length of my bed, which is pretty average size, and the main bulk to take up a 1/4 of it.

Can you guess? Ha! No, your wrong! It's Oh Girl! (Variations include: Oh Tranny! and Oh Fabuland-ish creature!)

I'd say the main bulk of the ship.

Make a decent frame of technics and get started.

Don't go to fast and forget essential details along the way!

Thanks CGH, it is an honor to receive input from one of such prestige as yourself.

Yeah, I admit it, I'm an absolute suck-up. Years o' practice.

The technic frame, while it will be easier once I've begun, is the hardest to do right now, as I need to sketch plans and designs for the shape, examine game footage for clues, but my best bet is a hexagonal prism with elaborations and bits hanging off it.

Thanks for the input. It'll take a while, but thanks to EB, the tricky workings of a project so huge is beginning to come together for me.

Thank you. You know, your post reminds me a lot of Sgt. Johnson of the Halo series. Just think Crazy Drill-Instructor.

As for my style, think: Oh My God! I don't know what to do! Oh - there's an idea...nah...oh, that'll work...nah...etc.

Cheers for the enthusiasm.

P.S. Goodness me, today has been a day, churning out the posts here on EB from 7am this morning!

EDIT: Posts were merged automatically? Hmm... odd.

I have to say the middle section... By which you mean this right?

If so, It will probably be a good starting point.

Also, a hexagonagal prism, with a regtangular bridge on top, would be perfect for the middle, but it wont be easy.

Oh, sorry. You get the idea, though. Do you have any pics of the ships skeleton so far?

Only sketches, haven't got building, probably won't 'till May. Gotta prepare my room for shell-shock first.

I can finish off the sketched area by Wednesday? Then I put some photos up. The sketch will be in scale, btw.

this thread should maybe be merged with this one, as they are more or less the same thing (in my opinion.)

My room would never survive such a thing, I would not be able to get any legos I am not using out.

My advice is to build a miniature version as accurately as you can to temper your enthusiasm. Then after it is built, see if you are still that interested in working toward the minifig scale version. You do realize that a 1:1 minifigure version will likely require an empty garage to build it in and will either need steel internal frame to allow for it to be picked up or be built in numerous connectable sections that can only be moved by separation.

If you really want to build a large ship as some builders who have built them. If you want to recreate some portion from the game (especially an RTS) build in miniature and have some friends over to play a LEGO version of the game.

If you stick with it the best type I can give you is to invest in technic parts and bulk lots in colors you need and avoid buying the figures or accessories.

I'm 100% certain that this is what I want to do. As posted above, it will be built in sections, and will be separated for transport/whatever. I do not really intend to show it publicly, but the internet will be jam-packed with pictures of it.

My bedroom is rather huge, and as stated, yet again, I intend for it too be the size of my bed. Which is pretty large, I guess. Essentially, what I'm getting at is that, if I wanted to, I could use it as a bed, as it would be the exact width, height and length of it, but probably even bigger!

Building in miniature and simply playing the game is not enough, sorry.

I haven't placed any minifigure orders or anything yet, as I'm in the planning process, drawing a to-scale plan on my bedroom wall (on paper, of course). My first move will be the technic frame, then attaching plates inside, then the outside walls, getting all the shapes right. Read the main thread (that Jifel linked to) for complete and up-to-date info.
