Inigo Montoya Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 http://www.neatorama.com/2009/02/23/lego-p...-on-the-thames/ "One of the largest Lego creations ever constructed is a 16-ft-tall model of an Egyptian pharaoh that looks suspiciously like King Tut. The giant pharaoh is currently floating down the River Thames on its way to Legoland in Windsor, England, where it will be the centerpiece of Legoland’s Kingdom of the Pharaohs, which is set to open March 21. This is the final leg in its 1,395-mile journey by truck and boat from the Czech Republic, where it was constructed. The pharaoh required more than 200,000 Lego bricks and weighs one ton." Quote
Brickthing Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 Cool. Does the new exhibit have anything to do with those new LEGO Board games we've heard of? Quote
Peppermint_M Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 It's for Land of the Pharoes. I believe the statue is somewhat of a centerpiece. It looks to be a new land in Legoland in place of Brickadilly's circus. From promotional posters at the park it looked like a roller coaster/shooter ride, like the Universal Studios MIB ride. Quote
Cardinal Brick Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 I saw it floating down the Thames the other day, rather impressive in the brick. I look forward to see it at LegoLand Quote
Grrr Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 Wouldn't it have been easier and cheaper just to ship the bricks to Legoland and assemble/glue it there. It seems silly to ship it in one piece like this. Quote
Shoc Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 That's... odd. I was in London on Saturday, obviously a bit too early to see it. It looks like a great model, very impressive! Couldn't they have had it lay down instead of standing up, open to the elements? Hmm... I look forward to seeing it at Legoland Windsor, the Land Of The Pharaohs section looks interesting from the poster I saw at Legoland, it's based on one of my favourites, the Adventurers Egypt subtheme (which is ironic as that was 10-11 years ago!). :skull: Quote
Dadster Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 I know what they say its been built for...but does anyone else think there's a chance it's a small hint that Egyptian themes are "on the way" in the future? Quote

That would be good, but I don't think so. The Viking land at Legoland Windsor was completed in 2007, as the Viking theme ended. At least we know that there's an Egyptian themed Lego 'board game', but I think that's the most we will get for now. :skull: Quote
Millacol88 Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 Wow! that thing is awesome. Sadly, its probably glued and they'll wreck it when there done with it... Quote
Shoc Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 (edited) Wow! that thing is awesome. Sadly, its probably glued and they'll wreck it when there done with it... Not for a long time though. Models at Legoland are usually on show for years and long enough for people to enjoy them! Legoland Windsor opened in 1996, I've been every year including and since 1996, and a lot of the original models are still there, especially the really big ones (like the Pharaoh is). :skull: Edited February 24, 2009 by Shoc Quote

Peppermint_M Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 It was taken down the Thames to mirror the "real thing" from a few months back when the British Museam had a huge egyptian exhibit. Certainly a good promotion for Lego and Legoland, ferrying their newest attraction down the river for all to see. Bit slow to catch up though, it was last week they did it (ok ,so i do compulsivly google the word Lego in google news...). Quote
user Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 WOW! My friend told me about this a few days ago but I did'nt believe him. Quote
paul_delahaye Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 It's a good publicity stunt, it's not that huge it could not have gone in a truck, straight to Lego Land? Quote
Peppermint_M Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 It was a publicity stunt... Taking it in a truck would have been a most mundane method. Mirroring a similar stunt in the middle of London is a great way to get attention and visitors to the park. Quote
