Freddie Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 I agree with Asya and Bobby on this, it looks great now. Proportions are much closer to that of other train cars, and it no longer looks chubby. Sweet interior too! Quote
brickmania Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 Looks beautiful and I don'twant to take away from the fine job you did... but I have some recommendations to make it closer to the original car. 1. The lego train windows are the wrong shape for that car. I would suggest thin wall panels on their sides to shape the windows right. This negates your shortage of tan window frames and will let you make a much longer car. 2. Get rid of the opening doors. They are the also the wrong dimension (too wide) and real train doors open inwards, not out, I would recommend recessing a 2-wide door using jumpers and you'll just have to pretend it opens. 3. American trains don't have bumpers. Rebuild your boogies without them. OK, I'm new here so I don't want to come across as being a jerk on one of my first posts. These are simply honest suggestions. Shadows Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 Version 2 with custom doors: Now that's what I was waiting for... it's -ly! It's so smooth and classy... ever considered hosting a Murder Mystery Train? Here are the custom doors. Tan and blue are hard colors to match and they even print splotchily (it is a word). Some day, I'll have a better printer and a closer color match for LEGO colors... I love the simplicity of the pattern and how it carries through from the rest of the car. As for the tan, yeah, it's a tough one, I've never been sure of the tan I use either. Mine is 14/21/47/0 (#d7c599), but it usually looks a tiny bit dark to me. If that isn't what you used, it might be perfect in this case, but I wouldn't sweat it, they just look like they'd seen more wear than the rest of the car and were recently painted to fix that. Those are the little variations that help keep life from being bland. And yes, the red and yellow suitcase did come with my 8654 Scuderia Ferrari Truck Yeah, got to get some of those. Enjoy! I look forward to hearing what people think of the update. I love it, I wouldn't change a thing except maybe that 1x2 grill tile. Unless that's accurate to the real thing, I'd either go black or chrome. Hide it or make it stand out even more, but that grey just seems odd to me. Can we look forward to more and other types of cars? Quote
Hinckley Posted March 1, 2009 Author Posted March 1, 2009 Almost done and it ALMOST looks presentable, but not quite yet... you should remove that THING coming out of the roof since it's impossible for cars to land on top of the car, hence no viable action scene can take place there. Yeah, and speaking of that - make the roof flatter too! Let's face it, what's the use of a train which can't be used to shoot action scenes Ok, now I must stage an action scene on the roof... Looks beautiful and I don'twant to take away from the fine job you did... but I have some recommendations to make it closer to the original car.1. The lego train windows are the wrong shape for that car. I would suggest thin wall panels on their sides to shape the windows right. This negates your shortage of tan window frames and will let you make a much longer car. Yes, I see that, but I'd rather show off my rare windows. But as much as I want to build the car in the picture, I want to stick to a LEGO standard and I do like those windows. I plan to try what you are talking about but with a different color scheme. And nothing I've built has to do with a shortage of train windows. I have six tan train windows left. 2. Get rid of the opening doors. They are the also the wrong dimension (too wide) and real train doors open inwards, not out, I would recommend recessing a 2-wide door using jumpers and you'll just have to pretend it opens. Again, I like the LEGO doors and real train doors don't necessarily open in as much as they are sliding pocket doors. I like sticking to the LEGO standard and I would never use a two wide fake door. 3. American trains don't have bumpers. Rebuild your boogies without them. Nah. But thanks for all the great suggestions! I like getting thorough feedback, even if I do reject all the suggestions... OK, I'm new here so I don't want to come across as being a jerk on one of my first posts. These are simply honest suggestions. Not at all, like I said, I appreciate a thorough critique and honest feedback. I love the simplicity of the pattern and how it carries through from the rest of the car. As for the tan, yeah, it's a tough one, I've never been sure of the tan I use either. Mine is 14/21/47/0 (#d7c599), but it usually looks a tiny bit dark to me. Those are the little variations that help keep life from being bland. I use 3/17/44/0 and it comes out way too pink. I'll try yours. I actually color-corrected the photos to match a little better. It looks too pink IRL. I love it, I wouldn't change a thing except maybe that 1x2 grill tile. Unless that's accurate to the real thing, I'd either go black or chrome. Hide it or make it stand out even more, but that grey just seems odd to me. You got it! Can we look forward to more and other types of cars? There will be at least two more cars and at least one more type, but we have to see what time and budget bring after April 15th (the release of the Emerald Night ) Thanks everyone for the nice compliments and honest feedback. Much appreciated! Quote
Natman8000 Posted March 1, 2009 Posted March 1, 2009 Oooh! It looks so much better longer. Nice, sleek, and intuitive. Are you going to put this with the emerald hight assumong you get it? Quote
Hinckley Posted March 2, 2009 Author Posted March 2, 2009 Oooh! It looks so much better longer. Nice, sleek, and intuitive. Are you going to put this with the emerald hight assumong you get it? Once again, this has nothing to do with the Emerald Night train. I'm building my own steam train, not inspired by Emerald Night. I sped up my building of this so I could post it before it was released and feel cool about having tan train windows. That's all, just ego. I was inspired as a photographer by the Emerald Night, in taking some of the shots of my MOC, but that is not what this is based off of, no no no. Thanks for the nice compliments though! Quote
