Hinckley Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 So, I would like to make a steam train. But, I haven't really had the time to tackle an engine. So I started with the Passenger car. I think this will be more of a prototype for the final, but I wanted to make something. I may make a steampunk train and add it to my Book of the Ancients story, but will probably start with wrapping my mind around how to build a train from scratch. Then greeble it up later! I made it in 8 wide because it give me more room for the interior. I also wanted to build out the base and leave room for the wheels. The coupling is separate from the wheels: A long view: The picture I used for inspiration: Check out my website here and the full gallery of this MOC here Quote
The Green Brick Giant Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 The luggage rack is simple and awesome! I love it! It could be an official set. Quote
OptimusPrime12380 Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 (edited) Cool MOC, it's definitely a start in the right direction. I especially like the baggage compartments/luggage rack, that's a nice touch. Edited February 17, 2009 by OptimusPrime12380 Quote
Eilif Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 (edited) Hinckley! I'm not sure what made you think this MOC was any where near ready to show, but you need to work a little harder before taking just any old thing off your workbench and regurgitating it up on EuroBricks. I am truly disapointed in you.... Just kidding, I love it. I'd really like to see baggage and observation cars in this style, and has been noted, your horizontal fence luggage rack is a stroke of genius. Great MOC. Edited February 17, 2009 by Eilif Quote
Ricecracker Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Hinckley, you've done it again. As has been noted, the luggage rack is nothing short of genius, and it's nice to see the couplings not attached to the wheels. The only suggestions I have would be to make the part in between the wheels larger, to centre the windows, and to change the tan log bricks to regular bricks. Even if you don't end up liking it, could you post a picture so that I can see what it would look like? Thank you, and again, great work as usual. Quote
AgentRick Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 This is really good, but if you're going for the 8-wide look, then I suggest making the base longer to look better. Quote
5150 Lego Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Very cool. Based on your train car, i think TLC should made all of thier engines and cars 8 wide. It just looks much more complete,as well as gives more interior detail. The lugage rack is cool! Great Job! Quote
benny Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 This is really good, but if you're going for the 8-wide look, then I suggest making the base longer to look better. same idea!!! His 8X train is very good design!! However, i think increase the length of train will be better in outlook! Quote
Freddie Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 I have to agree that this car would look better if it were longer. Doesn't have to be much longer, but right now the proportions are way off and it looks like it belongs in a child's comic book. Other than that you've pretty much nailed it. I'm wondering, though. Did 10194 somehow inspire you to build this? Quote
simonwillems Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 This looks very good, I love the luggage racks! The one thing I would recommend though is to attach the couplings to the wheels or at least to the same turntable as the wheels, the way it is now makes it look better but it will be very hard to attach to an other waggon or the locomotive because of the free space between the wheels and the coupling. If you look at the third picture you posted you can see the couplings sticking out outside the track: it will be very hard to keep the waggons connected in curves because they won't line up. Especially at eight wide trains. A quite technical story, I know, but it will all become very clear once you attach another car. I struggled with the same problem while constructing my eight wide train and got pretty frustrated at some point.... I remember the discussion about the non-existence of tan windows in the 10194 topic, I see there is living proof here about that matter. I like to see the complete train some day! Quote
legotrainfan Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 This is a wonderful moc! The idea to build a luggage rack is brilliant, and it is that little detail that I find so amazing! Quote
Captain Green Hair Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Nice work Hinckley, i like the colorscheme and the luggage rack a lot! I do however think it's a bit short for an 8 wider, but as you said it's a prototype... Good luck on the engine, if you need some help you know where to find me. Quote
Asuka Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 A smooth design, a wonderful color scheme and a fine interior, very nice! But... some working doors on the sides to let the passengers enter the platform could be nice though... Quote

Hinckley Posted February 17, 2009 Author Posted February 17, 2009 Hinckley! I'm not sure what made you think this MOC was any where near ready to show, but you need to work a little harder before taking just any old thing off your workbench and regurgitating it up on EuroBricks. I am truly disapointed in you.... Hinckley, you've done it again. Even if you don't end up liking it, could you post a picture so that I can see what it would look like? Thank you, and again, great work as usual. I will try that. I'm obsessed with textures so I forget to leave it out where it's not necessary. Those log bricks really don't belong in there. There is room to make the duct work wider, so I will do that. I will lengthen it as suggested, so I'll have even more room. This is really good, but if you're going for the 8-wide look, then I suggest making the base longer to look better. Funny, I started with it longer, then shortened it. It may have been because I didn't have tan or dark blue train doors, or I didn't want to use all of the tan train windows since they are rare. But especially since I made it higher to accommodate the luggage rack, it probably should be longer to even out those proportions. Thanks! same idea!!! His 8X train is very good design!! However, i think increase the length of train will be better in outlook! Agreed! Thank you. Read the comment above for a response to the length issue. I have to agree that this car would look better if it were longer. Doesn't have to be much longer, but right now the proportions are way off and it looks like it belongs in a child's comic book. Other than that you've pretty much nailed it. I'm wondering, though. Did 10194 somehow inspire you to build this? All right, I'll make it longer! Read my comments above about the length. 10194 inspired me to finally finish this and show off my tan train windows before they became available in retail... This looks very good, I love the luggage racks! The one thing I would recommend though is to attach the couplings to the wheels or at least to the same turntable as the wheels, the way it is now makes it look better but it will be very hard to attach to an other waggon or the locomotive because of the free space between the wheels and the coupling. I remember the discussion about the non-existence of tan windows in the 10194 topic, I see there is living proof here about that matter. I like to see the complete train some day! Thank you! I will take your word for the couplings issue. The wheels have to clear the detail I added under the line of the train base, otherwise they won't turn, so I will have to use some long 2x plates to attach the couplings. Yes, tan train windows do currently exist, but they are very very hard to find. So either the train is real, or I made the fake ... and I didn't make the fake, so I'm pretty sure it's real. But, as I told Freddie, when I saw the pics of the 10194, I had to finish this and show it off before those tan train windows became common... Nice work Hinckley, i like the colorscheme and the luggage rack a lot! I do however think it's a bit short for an 8 wider, but as you said it's a prototype... Good luck on the engine, if you need some help you know where to find me. I will certainly use your engines for inspiration! You are awesome. I'm currently making a Fabuland fire truck based on your fire truck. As for the length issue, see above for my comments about the length. Everyone seems to agree with you. I see it now as well. I just hope I have enough dark blue bricks and plates to lengthen it. A smooth design, a wonderful color scheme and a fine interior, very nice! But... some working doors on the sides to let the passengers enter the platform could be nice though... Thanks Asuka! I think working train doors on the side would be the ultimate! Too bad they aren't available in dark blue or tan. I may have to make some stickers and just make some. I wonder if anyone has already put a train door into an Illustrator template... anyone? Working doors, shmercking doors. That's why the roof comes off . Smarty-pants! Yes, they currently vault through the roof to get to the platform...or use the working doors on either end. I considered making an open platform at either end like this passenger car: It could work since it's going to be a steam train... Yes? No? Quote
Ricecracker Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Smarty-pants! Yes, they currently vault through the roof to get to the platform...or use the working doors on either end. It's goof to know I'm not the only one that vaults through the roof of train cars I considered making an open platform at either end like this passenger car: It could work since it's going to be a steam train... Yes? No? I'd say no, although you could do that to make it appear longer. In the end, it's up to you though. Quote
Hinckley Posted February 17, 2009 Author Posted February 17, 2009 Pfft. No way. I'll either brick-build a train door or create a decal. I gotta build my own train door template though. Quote
Darth_Legois Posted February 17, 2009 Posted February 17, 2009 Looks pretty good I like it being 8 wide since it has more room inside The luggage racks really good they work well I think. Can't wait to see the rest of the train. Quote
Holodoc Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 The luggage rack is simple and awesome! Exactly my thoughts. Very clever! You didn´t come to the idea with the first Emerald Night pics, did you? EDIT: First read the whole topic... Ok, you have been inspired. I´ve got to rethink my 6-wide train cars. 8-wide seems a lot better. Quote
Shadows Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Looks great! I'll reserve a lot of comments until the next update, since you'll strangle me if I suggest what everyone else already did. On a similar note... damn fine luggage rack. I didn't realise that yellow briefcases existed and now I find they're hard to get, though reasonably priced if you happen to need something from one of their sellers. Which I don't. Oh, and it's good to see you're "keeping it real", as the kids say... Indy Han shot first. One last comment before I stop making comments I wasn't going to make. Who does one have to beg for a train door template? I don't know that I'll ever design a train door, but I'd sure love the option. You know, you really need to get more concussions, you're producing an amazing amount of stuff right now. Quote
Klaus-Dieter Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 That's an absolutely amazing MOC, Hinckley! I really it! It looks totally realistic with the great choice of colors and all that awesome details and accessory! Since I haven't seen the suitcases in yellow and red before: From which set do you have them - or are these self-made/self-painted/...? Very, very well done! Klaus-Dieter Quote

I think I got those suitcases from the big Ferrari truck. I'll check later and confirm for you. Quote
Hinckley Posted February 27, 2009 Author Posted February 27, 2009 Version 2 with custom doors: I've lengthened it as everyone suggested. It's about as long as my prelim version and I like it very much at this length. I did add an extra window on each side, but I like it with the tan spaces better... Here are the custom doors. Tan and blue are hard colors to match and they even print splotchily (it is a word). Some day, I'll have a better printer and a closer color match for LEGO colors... Mimicking the product shots of 10194, I've removed the side to give a good view of the bar, dining tables and luggage rack... And yes, the red and yellow suitcase did come with my 8654 Scuderia Ferrari Truck As ricecracker suggested, I put more distance between the wheels and made the ventilation system wider... (I think that's the ventilation ) And I took simonwillems advice and made the couplings part of the wheels again. Enjoy! I look forward to hearing what people think of the update. Quote
MetroiD Posted February 27, 2009 Posted February 27, 2009 Almost done and it ALMOST looks presentable, but not quite yet... you should remove that THING coming out of the roof since it's impossible for cars to land on top of the car, hence no viable action scene can take place there. Yeah, and speaking of that - make the roof flatter too! Let's face it, what's the use of a train which can't be used to shoot action scenes On a bit more serious note... it' absolutely brilliant :) The luggage rack, the doors, the entire bar atmosphere going on... it's a really great car, I'd love to see it as part of a train carriage or stopped at a train station!
