Legomyeggo Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 Wondering what vibe you guys are getting on this series. I was recently at TRU and Target and both had this set on Clearance. None of the other Lego sets were marked down. I think one or two of the sets look good, but nothing I'd fork out $70 for. Your thoughts? Quote
Athos Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 I was recently at TRU and Target and both had this set on Clearance. Which set? Steve Quote
Legomyeggo Posted February 13, 2009 Author Posted February 13, 2009 Which set?Steve All of them. TRU had like 6 sets all marked down 25%. Dont remember Target's markdown. Quote
AFOL SF Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 Which Power Miner sets are on sale/clearance since I've been to 2 Target stores last night and I didn't see any 'clearance' signs at all (not on any set, that is)? I do admit there are as much Power Miner sets as Star Wars. I bought the 3 smallest sets but will wait for the larger ones to go on sale/clearance. Quote

I don't know if it's just a local promotion or the stores call and not Lego's itself. The big $70 set was marked down to $55. That almost baited me into it, but alas still couldn't do it. Quote
xenologer Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 (edited) On sale at Target?? Wish it was my local store doing that... but Target is sporadic about sales specific to location... Well, of all the sets I only truly love the Claw Digger. I did end up buying all but the largest anyway though. Their action features are all very well done, but... somehow I get bored with that after a while. If the opposing Rock Monsters had more of a backstory or perhaps vehicles or bases(that can be knocked over by the miners) then playability might go a lot farther. I'm thinking a set with tons of mdstone and dkstone bricks made up as a rock cave with fall away walls for the Driller to run into and whatnot. You can kinda see them going this direction a little with the Crystal King giant rock monster in the summer sets; I hope that catches on... Story organization is definatly a minus on this theme, near as I can tell there are no webcomics or anything fun like that to inspire play. Even the character's have problems with being not well defined - depending on where you look their names are mixed up! So yeah, I'd say thats why the stuff isn't so popular (lack of MOCs and whatnot), while the vehicles have some cool design there hasn't been much effort into developing a solid 'world' for them to fit into... p.s. it does seem that ther will be a PM mini movie on Nickelodeon, so the situation on story may change in the future...a shame I don't have that channel... I think you nailed it on the backstory. This theme kind of came out of nowhere, but then again Lego has always had a knack for doing that. My son watches a lot of Disney and Nickolodeon and they run these Power Miner commercials like mad. What I dont like is the rock monsters, I think they are silly. Maybe if this was more a sub theme to the City Construction set, but with a futuristic spin on it I might like it more. Otherwise I'm with you on if your going to run with these rock villains then get these guys a cool base or something. I love the green color on the vehicles, but otherwise I'm not enamored. Quote
Loganwan Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 A sale is MUCH different than a clearance. They were put on sale, I am sure to drum up some interest in the line. I think people are a apprehensive about starting a new collection, and this is a good bump. TLC has a lot more in store for the Power Miners line. Some of the sets are on the expensive side, so I for one was glad to see them go on sale so I could get the big set. I think they are well made, and have some great functions and playability. If all else fails, their alternate builds show just how versitile the piece can be, turning a mining vehicle into a space ship of sorts. People need to give this set a shot. The characters are fun looking, and the sets build up real nice. Frankly I cannot wait to see what they come out with next. I still need to grab the little sets, but they tend to not be as good as the bigger sets in most lines. Quote
Legomyeggo Posted February 13, 2009 Author Posted February 13, 2009 The characters are fun looking, and the sets build up real nice. Forgot to mention that, I really like the minifigs. Just dont like the rock monsters. Quote
Dutch Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 i think power miners are a flop there just so ugle and the price cause i dont see paying 70$ for crystal sweeper plus the color sinks Quote
Peppermint_M Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 i think power miners are a flop there just so ugle and the price cause i dont see paying 70$ for crystal sweeper plus the color sinks Hmm, yes Mr Star Wars fan... talking about prices.... Lucky you, get it while it's on sale! Lots of shops sell new lines at a reduced rate to get people intrested. I bought most of the Exo-Force mecha on 25% off in Woolworths when they were new, for about the first two weeks after the sets arrived in shops they cost less than RRP. Parents would buy one and the kids wanted more just in time for the price to go back to RRP... All I can say is i need more lime green... Quote
Legomyeggo Posted February 13, 2009 Author Posted February 13, 2009 Lucky you, get it while it's on sale! Well gang, I stopped back off at TRU on the way home from work and picked up the Crystal Sweeper for $55. Not bad I guess, definitely wouldnt have paid $70. This was the only set in the line that really jumped out at me from the get go. After the build I'll let you know if it was even worth it at this price. FYI - The sets were on Sale, not Clearance. Hinckley Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 They are selling really well in the Chicago area LEGO stores. Stash2sixx can back me up there. If you look at Toys R Us's website they appear to be having a promotional sale on Power Miners. That is not a clearance. I was at Target last night and none of the Power Miners sets were on sale. A quick look at the Target website lists all of the Power Miners sets at full price. Are you sure you have all of your facts straight? When I asked the head of Play Themes at LEGO about this line, he said it test marketed through the roof and kids always went crazy for it in every market. It does appear to be doing very well, in the first month it's been released-so I suggest everyone just waits and sees instead of jumping to conclusions even if you do totally hate the line. I believe everyone has seen that TLG is moving forward with a second wave of Power Miners this year, so I think they're at least doing OK... Quote
Erdbeereis Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 My local Target often has sales on Star Wars and other more popular themes as well. Frankly, I really like Power Miners. I just think the theme as a whole is a fun concept and I love the minifigs. They also have some nice MOCing pieces such as the dynamite and the roll cages, not to mention all of the lime green. Quote
The Green Brick Giant Posted February 13, 2009 Posted February 13, 2009 Wondering what vibe you guys are getting on this series. I was recently at TRU and Target and both had this set on Clearance. None of the other Lego sets were marked down. I think one or two of the sets look good, but nothing I'd fork out $70 for. Your thoughts? TRU in the USA have the sets for 25% off this week. The sets have been out at TRU for less than 1-2 months, there is no way for it to be a flop yet. Sometimes TRU and other stores have these things called sales, they last a week and then the prices go back up. TRU will have 20-20% off other themes too, last year they had 20% of IJ, which made the sets only slightly more than what LEGO charges. I think the theme will be good for LEGO and last 2 years, maybe three. The $30 set, it's a little small, but the fact the drill drills when you roll the set along the floor I'm sure will be a huge hit with children. Quote
Skull-Mark_Ladybug Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 I have mixed views on this theme. I like the whole idea of some sort of large scale mining operation, and the sets have some nice pieces, but a lot of the sets feel rather empty. Most of the models are big but have tons of large holes in them, so set design quality seems low. The rock monsters also seem like an afterthought, since they have no real weapons or bases. I think that once more stores get more ’09 stuff sales of PM will go up. Oh and the 25% sale at TRU isn’t just on PM it’s on most themes like Pirates or City, by any two sets from a theme and save 25% as I understand. Quote
The Cobra Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 Earlier today I was in a local Toys Center (an Italian toy store chain): Granite grinder = sold out Two small sets = few left. Bigger sets = all available, but shelves were far from full. As I said in the "2009 Sets" topic in the News forum, most every 2009 theme is selling good here in Italy. Quote
Still Raindrop Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 My Target doesn't even carry Power Miners. TRU has a few, but the best place to get them here is actually Wal-Mart. Quote
hollisbrick Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 Well Australia doesn't have them yet Which I'm annoyed about... But judging by the pics I think every one is just being plain picky (the people that dont like em anyway) I probably definately get the 2 or 3 smaller sets! And the only reason I'm not gonna get the others is because I need to be conservitive of room But yeh I reckon that the theme in general is pretty cool Quote
Brickmaster Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 I think it's doing extremely well. I was baited into buying all of them myself. They are very cleverly built, and have cute figures, and neat functions, aswell as fun colors to boot. I see less of a stock in PM, than I do with Star wars, or Pirates. This is reoccurring to all stores I go to. Yet I see no threads about Star wars or Pirate lines being failures? Quote
The Crazy One Posted February 15, 2009 Posted February 15, 2009 I really like Power Miners , i ordered 3 of the Lego Shop , and i love them all. Shame about the names , i can't tell if these two guys are Rex , Doc or Duke. Quote

Yet I see no threads about Star wars or Pirate lines being failures? Don't know if you can compare the PM to the Star Wars or Pirates lines. Star Wars is in its 10th year, and Pirates has been off and on for 20 years now. By flop I meant bombing right out of the gate. I'm definitely seeing a lot of enthusiasm on the boards now for this series. I was at Target last night and the Mech Miner and Thunder Driller were both sold out. Guess the answer to the question is 'Power Miners a flop?' a resounding NO! On a side note, it does seem like there always a billion Star Wars sets on the shelves. As far as what I see most kids going for? The City and Indiana Jones sets. Quote

Personally, i don't feel a back story is esential for a theme to survive. Thats one of the wholo points of LEGO. Build your sets and make up your story as you go along!
