Badsneaker Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 I came across this beautiful Detroit mansion a few days ago. If you have never seen check it out. I was so struck by it I have decided to build my own version ?(MOV)? of this. I have the roof done, but I have only red, not enough black and the black inverted black pieces for the dormers are hard to come by anyways. Its actually slightly wider, as I miscounted on the length! I nailed the chimney tops after oh 20 minutes. Sneaky lil %$*# used a clever 3x5 flat chimney top centered on 2x4 brick. The only way to fit on a 2x4 brick is with a 2x2 flat smooth in the center and 1x2 plates on either side. It allows you to center the 3x5 top. I'll be working on the main house section and will have removable floors and roof. My kids would kill me if if their minfigs could not "move in" to this place once its done. Heres my roof. I found the old style white windows on eBay and will be ordering some. All I have is the old style red, no white. Backside. It was hard but fun to get the railing to cut into the roof. I will work on the deck later. I wanted to get the jist of how it was made and will make mods as I go along. I have some 1x2 black flats with rails coming from Bricklink to finish the 4 bottom corners. I used the handles for now. Heres the link. http://flickr.com/photos/decojim/268639064...ectureanddesign This guy is amazing. I hope he doesn't mind me using this for inspiration. Its definitely doable, and figuring out how he did it is challenging too. Quote
Guss Posted October 3, 2008 Posted October 3, 2008 you did well , your MOV roof is nice ^^ if you need some black tiles, juste buy the 4954 creator house, there is a lot of black tiles, and I think the guy who built this house was inspired by it, because of the corners with grey 2x1 tiles^^ anyway he did a really nice house, and I think your MOV will be nice too , even if the roof is red Quote
Badsneaker Posted October 4, 2008 Author Posted October 4, 2008 you did well , your MOV roof is nice ^^ if you need some black tiles, juste buy the 4954 creator house, there is a lot of black tiles, and I think the guy who built this house was inspired by it, because of the corners with grey 2x1 tiles^^ anyway he did a really nice house, and I think your MOV will be nice too , even if the roof is red The 4954 has all the roof tiles (almost) I would need but they are scarce here is the US. I should have gotten one at SAH when they had them. Now its eBay and they are expensive. I have found some single bricks on eBay but I think I'm just gonna stay red on the roof. Not sure yet on the main house color, I may have a line on medium blue in bulk. I'll post some pics when I get some more pieces that I need for this project. Quote
Guss Posted October 4, 2008 Posted October 4, 2008 I bought one in a supermarket ( Manor ) here in Switzerland , and there is 3 set yet, I think if you look at the supermarkets around , you'll find one ^^ ( if you're lucky enough ^^ ) Quote
bullet8542 Posted October 5, 2008 Posted October 5, 2008 (edited) It's from Indian Village absolutely awesome! To bad the neighborhood is that nice anymore at one time it was were the power money in Detroit lived, All of the home are fabulous just surrounded by a mess. Awesome find thanks for sharing! Wait a minute...........Were did you find this? It looked way to familiar, There is a guy in the Michigan Lego user group that builds buildings like this. His Penobscot building is one of the coolest things I have ever seen next to his Fisher Building (Both here in Detroit), He builds a lot for their train layout and does great work! It has to be Jim's work. Thanks Again. Edited October 5, 2008 by bullet8542 Quote
Badsneaker Posted October 8, 2008 Author Posted October 8, 2008 Can someone help me figure out the shutters on this house? It looks like maybe technic 1x1 bricks with short pins to hold the shutters. But maybe not. Quote
Lego12 Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 I that mansion. You're roof is really neat! I want to build something like this, but not as big. I don't have enough pieces.... Quote
Zorro Posted October 8, 2008 Posted October 8, 2008 This is a very good find of you Badsneaker, this Detroit mansion looks so very real compared to some other recent house MOCs I have seen on Brickshelf and Flickr. The scale of the mansion must be measured, it looks very (close to) an architects "minibuilding" in any case... If you have never seen check it out. I was so struck by it I have decided to build my own version ?(MOV)? of this. I must admit I shortly felt the desire to build one as well, but I was quickly drawn down by reality, since I have so much to do now I just don't have the time to spare... Good luck with yours ! Your roof looks great. Quote
eti Posted October 9, 2008 Posted October 9, 2008 Hey just in case you hadn't found it, there's a lot more views on MOCpages: http://www.mocpages.com/moc.php/65068 Not sure about the shutters, looks to me like a headlight brick in the bottom and then a 1x2 / 1x4 SNOT converter mounted in the middle, with 2 grill tiles mounted onto those? Badsneaker Posted October 9, 2008 Author Posted October 9, 2008 I know huh zorro. This guy must be an architect, he has tons of real buildings pictures in his folder with detailed info about the architect and building styles. If you llok closely you'll see its almost all built with plates, hardly any bricks at all. Those little white windows are 1.37 each on eBay. I haven't found anyone on Bricklink that has nice new ones in bulk. I hate buying used windows! I have only yet to build the roof, so I know its going to take a while. I have tons of other stuff to do also! Quote
