Gen. Knowledge Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 Hello, I came up with a story for my army and I want to create a comic for it (I would love to create a brickfilm of it, but don't have the time or patients). I don't have all the parts or knowledge to put together 3 ships for my Navy. These three ships are vital to the story so I would like to buy them or have them commissioned by some of the great ship builders on this forum. Would anyone here like to sell or build me 3 ships for my Navy? Or maybe you could direct me to a BL seller that sells them. Thanks. Tony Quote
El Bucanero Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 First of all: Welcome! So you are looking to buy some ships, you could always scroll down on this page (or any page in the pirate forum), and you will find a list of eBay auctions selling pirate LEGO sets. Especially LEGO in the UK seems to be exceptionally low priced. Or you could ofcourse check Bricklink, I'm sorry, but I don't know any good seller selling ships, because I never buy sets from BL, only parts. I hope that helps! Quote
Pickerel Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 Have you looked at TLC's designs? They've got some nice ships from their pirates line that might be of use to you. You can buy them for a reasonable amount of money compared to commission work. I'm afraid I hardly have enough time to work on my own MOC's let alone other people's . Quote

I thought about buying a bunch of parts and making my own, but I haven't been around tall ships enought to know how to build them correctly. I need a really big ship that looks like it could transport a lot of soldiers and look good enough for an Admiral to command. I also need two more smaller ships that would carry men and supplies. Maybe I should contact some of the MOC ship builders on this forum and see if they will sell me their ships. Tony Quote

Tony I might be interested in building one or more ships for you. Here's another idea, though: Why not borrow or lease some of our MOC ships for the movie and then send them back when you're done? It'd probably be less expensive to make the movie that way. Quote
Pickerel Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 For an admiral ? Are planning on wanting a ship the size of one that's a ship of the line? Out of curiosity you give the approximate length in studs and/or the number of cannons. If you do get the three ships I'll be glad to see pictures of them. Although judging by your description I'll doubt many members would be willing to do this task. As I said before I would but can't because of time and skill limitations. The internet can be a very valuable for research if you aren't able to find anyone and need to build the ships yourself. Also your local library if you have one, currently I've got a wonderful book on ships from mine . Quote

The other complication is the amount of time I would want to hold on to them. If I ever want to make a sequel I would have to borrow them again. Just too much of a hassle. But thanks for the ideas. Hello Pickerel, Here is a link to Captain K.'s ship that I really like. http://www.brickshelf.com/cgi-bin/gallery.cgi?f=277878 I emailed him to see if he would sell it, but I won't hold my breath. My main ship needs to be wide and long enough for me to capture some scenes with the main characters on it. The other two will mostly be slightly blurred-out in the back ground. One of the smaller cargo ships will be sunk in the story, but I will just buy spare boat parts for the scene. Quote

Do you have any pictures of ships you already built that you might want to sell?Unfortunately I'm in a bit of a bind. 97% of my massive pirates collection is up in Virginia at my parents' place and I'm living in Atlanta, 11+ hours away. I have to get my ships on the next trip to see my family. Consequently, I can't take any new photos. My largest ship, the ISS Advantage, is a heavily modified Black Seas Barracuda with four center sections blue and white striped sails. It has 2 large masts (main and fore) and a lanteen-rigged mizzenmast. There are 5 cannons per side and 6 swiveling cannons on turntables (2 fore, 4 aft) for a total of 16 guns. The sterncastle galley is three standard pirate ship windows across and has two levels with rooms including a food storage room with apples and such, a bar, and a "command center" of sorts with various maps, a backup compass and steering system, and work desks. There's another large ship in the Chesapeake, VA area that I know of...it's longer than mine but is more of a gun tub (not as much detail and deck) but you could load a massive pile of troops in it. Its name is the Chesapeake, and it's owned by a member of HaRDLUG, whose name I can't recall at the moment. I have never built anything as large as the ship you linked to but I imagine the cost could run at LEAST $500 USD, just for parts alone and shipping costs would be atrocious as well. In the interest of saving you money, I have another suggestion: Why not take a trip and visit the owner of a huge ship. The travel would cost less than making a new ship. You could film all the large exterior shots while visiting and then do any extra closeups back at home with "movie sets" -- large vignettes that were copies of parts of the ship like the quarterdeck. Hi Wes, I like your idea of filming on sets...maybe I should have the ships built to the scale of TLC ships and but film them at a distance without minifigs. I wouldn't be able to capture the scene of the army's boarding parade and the disembarking scene... I guess I have to get on eBay and Bricklink to get parts for ships. This will delay my plans but I really need a command ship. Lets see what I can get for $500! This will be fun. Quote
Pickerel Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 (edited) I'll look forward for your comic . Any info on the plot or is it going to be a surprise? You certainly chose a nice ship ! Edited August 2, 2008 by Pickerel Quote
El Bucanero Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 Considering the average size of a big ship MOC on a prefab hull, you will always need extra sets for the interior. Prefab hull made ships are just not big enough. The most easy way to get ships in your comic/movie, would simply be asking the creation permission for using exterior pics of his/her ship. You will need interior "movie sets" anyway. Quote

Yes, that's an idea you really should consider. Actually I was planning on doing exactly the same for some future episodes of my own comic. You could always ask the creator to take some more pictures of the MOC, so that they fit your comic. I suggest you browse the ship MOCs index - you'll find quite a few large ships there. However I disagree that prefab hulls are too small for proper interior scenery - I don't have problems with that when making my comic, and I'm not even working on my biggest MOCs. Indeed, you have always been blessed with great interior building skills! But nonetheless, taking pics for a comic/movie scene seems even hard in your excellent interior settings, don't you agree? Admiral Bejaune Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 For the right amount of money I would build one. Good luck with your search. You'll need it. Quote
Gen. Knowledge Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 I'll look forward for your comic . Any info on the plot or is it going to be a surprise? You certainly chose a nice ship ! Hello Pickerel, The plot is taken from movies I like and stirred up to make it slightly my own. It is completely fictional and only loosely based on historical figures, places, and events. I will be starting with Chapter 3, and hopefully I'll go back and do Chapters 1 and 2 when time and finances permit. I told my wife the plot, and she said it would be too time consuming to make it into a film by myself so that is why I chose to go the comic book route. Hey, maybe if I win the lottery some day I can hire people to make the move for me... I will hopefully have some pictures of my main characters and my army up by the end of next week. I'm waiting on some BL orders to update my main characters and troops. I'm having a heck of a time getting all the items I need from BL and eBay. Does anyone have any ideas how I should post my comic? Should I register a domain and host it using my .mac account or should I just upload them to Flickr? I'm hoping to release a new issue every month, but my schedule is so hectic that I may not be able to keep that schedule. Maybe 6 issues a year will be good... Trying to come up with Lego-centric names for characters and locations is proving to be very time consuming. Is there a website that will show me how to make chevrons for my sergeants? Tony Quote

Tony Sounds like a very nice comic . As for where to post your comic I know people post their comics on Brickshelf and then either re-post them or give links to them from here. It doesn't really matter where you post them, but for some reason I've seen a lot more speech bubble comics on Brickshelf. I don't have experience with a .mac account so I'd say Flikr. As for the Chevrons I don't have any ideas for websites that might be of help . I do know a little about coats-of-arms, but not military insignias. Quote
Capn Frank Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 ...Maybe I should contact some of the MOC ship builders on this forum and see if they will sell me their ships. Unfortunately Mr. Knowledge, you are only allowed to buy, sell, or trade lego in the Buy, Sell, Trade, and Finds Forum, and you must have citizens rank to create a topic in there. This EB policy was placed so that ppl don't join EB just to sell or buy lego. We would like to get to know you first. However, if you were to create a Work In Progress while you were building you ship, we could give you pointers. Feel free to check out the Index of MOC Ships for inspiration. Almost all the ships we've found are shown there. Quote

How many posts do you need to make to be a "Citizen" anyway? I've found some interesting eBay stuff that I wanted to post lately, such as a guy selling ONLY the ship from the 6277 Imperial Trading Post (Port Royal), and a 6285 that just sold for only $101 and change. I prefer Bricklink to eBay but nevertheless the big auction site has its moments from time to time. Quote

Antsa Antero Posted August 3, 2008 Posted August 3, 2008 You can buy my 1989 BSB and just change the flags and there you got one ship. I've got two and don't need the 1989 version Quote
Adam Posted August 4, 2008 Posted August 4, 2008 You can buy my 1989 BSB and just change the flags and there you got one ship. I've got two and don't need the 1989 version If Gen. Knowledge doesn't want it, I'll take it ! I don't have many BSBs... As others have said, there are many ebay auctions below. It's not easy to by MOCs, but I suggest, if you want some good ships, then buy a couple of sets (ie. a few BSBs) and make a MOC out of those. Moste large ships are very pricey on ebay, and even more expensive on bricklink unless you have a deep wallet . I'm sure a few generous souls on the forum would sell you a MOC, but only a few . In short, your mission will be an expensve one . Quote
Norrington Posted August 4, 2008 Posted August 4, 2008 I think building them to scale would be a good idea. And as for the boarding parade and disembarking scenes, just get parts and build the side of the ship! Or better, build the front, back, and one sids, like they did in the original POTC movie. Quote
Gen. Knowledge Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 61c Check out this ship I found on eBay. HERE Despite all the different colors, she is a pretty ship. Anybody going to bite? Tony Quote
