How to fix fried Lego RCUnit?

I fried the RC unit from my Lego set 8366; the servo output and receiver still work, but the motors run in only one direction (this is the version without the AUX output). Does anyone know how to fix this or what might have caused it? (I suspect overheating, a short circuit, or something similar).
