[MAR-CH4] Outpost Altercation

After the Long War, the easternmost reach of the Kingdom of Corrington - the tip of the peninsula, a devastated zone of land occupied by the forces of Mardier - was officially renounced by the Corrish King and annexed by the Kingdom of Mardier as per the treaty stipulating the terms of the War's end.

The Mardierians called this new territory "la Marcha Occidental", or simply "la Marcha": the March. As was customary in the conservatively feudal Mardierian society, the territory was further split into counties and fiefs given to loyal royal vassals. In an effort to appease the vocal and affluent Eslandolan party in the Kingdom and maintain their loyalty and coin, vast swathes of la Marcha were granted as stipends to the powerful Eslandolan House of Mendoza and their retainers.

However, tensions remained expectedly high as the local Corrish populace, or at least those that had remained or hadn't been displaced by the Mardierians were sceptical of their new overlords at best and outright belligerent at worst. Now and then the animosity reached a boiling point and local war bands of Corlanders would coalesce in a futile effort to oust the Mardierian occupier. Often centered around a core of veteran soldiers and mercenaries who had served the Corrish King during the Long War, the ranks of the war band would be supplemented with brigands and local rebellious peasants.

In order to strengthen their grip on the land, the Mardierians had hastily set-up simple fortifications and check points along key areas and roads to control the flow of traffic. As a symbol of Royal Mardierian influence, such outposts often formed the focal point of the rebels' ire.

While the Corrish war bands mostly didn't pose much of a threat to the combined might of Royal Mardierian forces and Eslandolan household troops, the incursions did mean the Mardierian had to remain vigilant and keep a serious number of soldiers posted in the March to keep the border region under control. A costly effort that puts even more of a strain on already strained royal coffers.
