Playable "Simon" game

I'm building a Lego interpretation of the "Simon" toy from my childhood in the 1970s-1980s.

The real one looks like this:

 

 

My version is meant to evoke the game, not replicate it. So far (without any top covers installed) it look like this:

 

I made more progress since I took this video a couple of weeks ago. Now there are color-matched plates around the lighted areas, and all of the wiring is complete.

Thus begins the second part of the project: programming! I'm going to program the game is good old line-numbered, interpreted BASIC, using two Interface A on my trusty Apple //e (or probably a Laser 128 clone in this project) ... For anyone not familiar with Interface A, read this or visit my website (long due for an update): www.brickhacks.com.

I don't remember if the real game plays forever or (more likely) if there's some limit to the number of turns. But due to my terrible programming skills, I'm going to limit it to probably eight turns. That's enough to make for some challenging play (not too easy), but short enough that I can bring it to a Lego convention and it won't take too much time to let visitors play.

I'm sure plenty of hobbyists have already built Simon using Mindstorms or whatever, but how many have done it in vintage eight-bit Dacta? Probably only one person is dumb enough. :)
