Wurger49 Posted 17 hours ago Posted 17 hours ago It felt great to be back designing Star Wars alternate builds. I had a serious designer’s block over the past week, so it was a huge relief when I finally managed a late-night power session that tied up all the loose ends on my latest A-Wing — something that finally meets my own standards. The white, dark blue, and sand green livery of Jango’s Slave I is striking, and I experimented with several concepts to decide which Star Wars vehicle to reimagine it as. After seeing many color variants of the A-Wing, I decided to create my own take on the R-22 A-Wing Prototype — incorporating unique design elements inspired by the availability unique parts. The A-Wing is essentially a cockpit with two engines and a hyperdrive. It’s faster and more maneuverable than the X-Wing, and a great selection of sloped wedges made it fairly easy to outline the general fuselage shape. Just when I thought I was flying through the design, I got stuck on the sloped central panel — a small section that completely derailed my progress. After taking a short break, I revisited the problem a few nights later and found the solution was surprisingly simple. I discovered two 1x2 special bricks with pin among the disassembled pieces. I had been fixated on using the 1x2 special plate with a pin hole, which created a half-stud offset and caused alignment issues, including the cockpit windscreen placement. Once that was solved, I powered through the rest of the design in one sitting. Long Technic bricks combined with slopes filled in for the missing cylinder pieces on the engine pods. I found the round corner bricks worked perfectly as laser cannon mounts. Slopes and the mini square blasters were used to form the laser cannons, and yellow highlights were added throughout the model for contrast. Finally, I built a sturdy display stand using Technic beams and pins, allowing a couple of different display angles. The result is a model that’s both strong enough for play and elegant enough for display. Instructions are on Rebrickable: https://reb.li/m/241314 Quote
