XG BC Posted June 27 Posted June 27 Hey guys, Today i will show you my fully 6-wide köf 2. this locomotive is quite hard to make in 6-wide since it has platforms for people to stand on, which interfere with the wheels. this is the closest i have got so far, with upside down panels. it uses the small wheels for extra space. https://flic.kr/p/2rdoYNq Quote
L-Gauger Posted June 27 Posted June 27 @XG BC Quite impressive! I can tell it took a lot of SNOT work to accurately render such a small locomotive in 6-wide. I'd be interested to see how you modeled the back wall of the cab, do you have a render of the locomotive from that side? It's hard to tell, but it looks like the bottom half of the cab wall is built upside-down. Once again, impressive! Quote
XG BC Posted June 27 Author Posted June 27 Thank you! yup, bottom half is upside down, i already have some ideas to try next, on the front part, more tomorrow. Quote
XG BC Posted June 28 Author Posted June 28 with even more snot nightmare i have managed to get the bottom part lower like it is on the real model. normally the wheels are in the way of these boards when building it 6-wide, but i have managed it with some trickery. Quote
zephyr1934 Posted June 28 Posted June 28 That's insane! But I fear your minifig crew might start protesting the working conditions. I like how you got the massive couplers on this tiny bug. Some of the snot makes my head hurt. Quote
XG BC Posted June 28 Author Posted June 28 yeah, the snot is pretty wild. these locomotives were transported on flat cars from the factory, so the cab has to be this low. its not uncomfortable to ride one irl, i have done it, you can stand up in there. Quote
XG BC Posted June 28 Author Posted June 28 1:38/1:40 would probably be 8 wide i assume. plenty of these out there. most famous is the one from octrainber.i wanted to do a 6 wide ome because my stuff is 6 wide too, and bigger would look weird. Quote
LEGO Train 12 Volts Posted June 29 Posted June 29 It's incredible to see a KOF 6 studs wide and yet perfectly proportioned. Very good job! Quote
Shiva Posted June 29 Posted June 29 That 8 wide looks nice too. Hmm, there were never any narrow gauge versions of Kof 2? Quote

Thank you! wasn't easy to achive. next up will be building it irl and possibly motorisation (maybe even with 9v track power), but that will have to wait a bit when i have time for it. 1 hour ago, Shiva said: That 8 wide looks nice too. Hmm, there were never any narrow gauge versions of Kof 2? yes, the HSB in east Germany has some, they were converted from standart 1435mm gauge to narrow meter gauge. https://www.hsb-wr.de/Aktuelles/Fahrzeugpark/Diesellokomotiven/199-010-199-012/ the 8 wide one isnt mine, it also (rightfully so) won octrainber. Both your minifig scale Köf II and Thomas / Ts__ are both well done. https://www.flickr.com/photos/187797009@N06/albums/72157720042101375/ There's another photo of that narrow meter gauge Köf II via googlemap Dampflokwerkstatt der Harzer Schmalspurbahnen GmbH. idlemarvel Posted June 30 Posted June 30 Very good. You have captured the look of the Köf very well indeed. Even without motorisation, which would be tricky with the tiny wheels, it would look good sitting in the siding of any continental layout. Quote
XG BC Posted June 30 Author Posted June 30 (edited) thank you! i already have some ideas on motorisation, its probably going to be another rubber band drive like my breuer rangiertraktor and the narrow gauge field railway locomotive. Edited June 30 by XG BC Quote
L-Gauger Posted June 30 Posted June 30 @XG BC assuming the Kof II is 8 feet wide, your model should scale well with 1:48 scale models. Have you considered modifying the model to to run on Q gauge (4 studs between rail centers) track? That would be the most accurate to scale. I'm exited to see how you motorize this thing, if you can get that to work I think it would be super cool to make a little Q gauge shunting layout, maybe 4 baseplates wide and 2 baseplates deep, for this engine. Quote
XG BC Posted June 30 Author Posted June 30 (edited) i am not one that builds to a specific scale, rather caring aboit if it looks right, this has worked out reasonably well so far. it will stay normal gauge, but i will put the file in my pcloud storage later, so you can modify it if you like (in the non motorized version it should be pretty easy to move the wheels inward), i am currently in the process of building it irl. L-Gauger Posted June 30 Posted June 30 @XG BC That makes perfect sense as a building philosophy. I'm exited to see both your model as it appears in real life and how you will go about motorizing it. I've made one similar model to a 2-stud gauge (you can see a photo in the initial post of the "Brick-Built Lego Railroad Track" thread) and fitting the motor was the biggest challenge in the design process. Quote
XG BC Posted June 30 Author Posted June 30 (edited) yeah fitting the motor is always difficult, especially when you also have to fit a battery into the model aswell (which i am hoping to not have to do this time). so far ist about half built, and not in the correct colors yet. LL1982 Posted July 1 Posted July 1 Wow nice build in such a compact form. Like the SNOT and upside down building stuff. 6wide is not easy I also noticed. Quote
XG BC Posted July 1 Author Posted July 1 thank you! wasnt easy, 6-wide at this level isnt easy at all i agree. Quote
XG BC Posted July 2 Author Posted July 2 (edited) Started the test build, the buffer height wasnt correct, neither was the wheels placement, i corrected that, it still isnt finished, the colors are wrong in lots of places, and some of the details arent there yet. motorisation will require a fairly extensive redesign i guess, that will take some time. zephyr1934 Posted July 3 Posted July 3 With the gray it is starting to look like a Burlington (CB&Q, not BN) locomotive. Quote
Shiva Posted July 3 Posted July 3 Someone took that Kof II for a ride, before workshop was finished with the maintenance and repaint of the vehicle. Was there some emergency, where this Kof II was needed? Quote

Was there some emergency, where this Kof II was needed? I am certainly going for a used look, this is a shunting engine after all, but not this excessive, this was just to test if the build would even work irl. the contrast will be mainly some parts in dark red, but not lots of gray, i will replace the gray panels aswell soon when i find them in black in my collection of bricks. there are lots of variations of color scemes and details in these locomotives (for example some have enclosed cabs, or dual air tanks etc.), due to them being used in the field, and sometimes damaged, sitting out in the open etc. and then repaired and modified. XG BC Posted July 4 Author Posted July 4 (edited) Today i made the digital file for the Köf as it is now you can check it out in this link: https://e.pcloud.link/publink/show?code=XZlGT6ZrfFnDDMkF4R1mcD2tHb3szuQ57Ay Edited July 6 by XG BC Quote
