While building this I realized that most liftable axles in heavy trucks steer by themselves thanks to specific caster angles and auto-center when lifted. It's hard to replicate that function at this scale so this is my alternative to the problem (haven't done much research to see if it was implemented before): it uses a rubber joint that gets stretched when the lifted axle is locked straight, thus allowing the front axle to steer. As a side effect it allows different steering radii thanks to the fact that the rear axle has a limiter (2x4 L beam). Still have to test it under heavy loads, but i suspect that by lifting it a few fractions of a millimeter it should steer fine.

Nice, the best I have ever seen so far is the one Designer Han used in his 5 axles dump truck but I did not see a lot of more...

5 axles dump truck

Man that’s some quality truck! I still haven’t fully grasped how the steering reallignes after the axle is lowered again. I suppose a full left or full right is less than 1/4th of a rotation of that yellow 4 lobed gear, so it slips into place?:pir_wacko:

My solution is definitely far less refined, I’m not sure I have the skills to accomplish such a mechanism, but I’m satisfied with what I have so far.

Will try to update the topic as the moc progresses

That is something I was thinking about untill I saw one container truck parked with raized rear (liftable) axle and it was pointing in oposite direction than fromt wheels (like in your second image link), but steering angle was smaller...

From info (distributer's info) it steeres even when it is lifted and it is hydraulic steering connected with truck steering system. The info is from M.A.N. distributer, but I don't know is every 6 x 2 M.A.N. model has it or not and not to mention other brands...

That would make sense, a much less intricate mechanism.

I guess it varies from manufacturer to manufacturer as here in Italy Iveco recycling trucks don’t steer the third axle when it’s lifted. I’ll have to look into it

You have to decide wether you will replicate real truck or make generic one. If second is the case, they you have all freedom that is allowed with parts from your inventory...

...we in Croatia have mostly highway Iveco trucks, but Gernan abd Scandinavizn brands are mostly used; probably it is dealers choice (which brand gives highest interest...)

Kind regards
