Gen. Knowledge Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 Has anyone ever used the brown log walls horizontally for a ships hull? I think it would look nice if there was a way to do it. I've seem one online that had them running vertically, but that didn't look realistic. Tony Quote
Captain Green Hair Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 It would be possible, but it will make it hard to get a nice ship shape... In what scale are you planning the ship? Quote
Gen. Knowledge Posted August 10, 2008 Author Posted August 10, 2008 It would be possible, but it will make it hard to get a nice ship shape...In what scale are you planning the ship? Minifig scale, but big enough to transport my cavalry units and their horses along with my large army. Tony Quote
Captain Green Hair Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 Minifig scale, but big enough to transport my cavalry units and their horses along with my large army. Tony Minifig scale means about 1:40, thus reasonably big... (1 meter length or more) I take it you want to build a cargo like ship? What year ar you aiming for? (16th, 17th or 18th century?) I don't think the log pieces horizontal are the best way to go.... Quote
Capn Frank Posted August 10, 2008 Posted August 10, 2008 Has anyone ever used the brown log walls horizontally for a ships hull? Yes, I think SlyOwl did: and Buccaneer of Brickshelf did: Hope that helps. Maybe SlyOwl will give you some pointers. Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted August 11, 2008 Governor Posted August 11, 2008 Too bad SlyOwl is away until the 24th of August but I'm sure he'd be glad to assist when he returns. Quote
SlyOwl Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 Yes, there have been instances of using bricks to build curved hulls. I use the "round tower" technique of using 1x2 bricks and 1x1 cylinders to create a curved hull; I would have done the whole thing (i.e. both sides), but I ran out of bricks. I would have done it in brown as well, if I'd had enough. I'm not sure how I would do the prow/stern though... Buccanneer's technique is more what you're after, and it looks as if it could be curved, although he hasn't. I wouldn't recommend using the 1x5x5 panel walls, as these reduce curvitude. SirNadroj also used the "round tower" technique for the prow of his Black Pearl - Hope this helps Quote
Governor Mister Phes Posted August 23, 2008 Governor Posted August 23, 2008 Ahhhhhh SlyOwl is back! I knew he'd provide a useful answer. Now, if I've noticed correctly, this new Pirate Ship uses 1 x 4 log walls as part of its hull - did anyone else notice this? Quote

Thomas B. Posted October 19, 2008 Posted October 19, 2008 That would be a feat, but how do you make the bow? Quote
