Horation Posted August 5, 2024 Posted August 5, 2024 This sounds a little like the ship of Theseus ; will replacing one part of a boat each day until all parts have been replaced result in a new boat or not? In this case, it is quite apparent that a good chunk of effort has been placed in making sure that all the original details are there. Quote

Considering he's only in two sets, I'd have to guess the 6286 Skulls Eye Schooner! I knew it would be too easy, lol. The problem with the ship is, to make it look good it needs to be slightly larger scale than the Imperial Trading Post. However that may actually make the figs looks a little closer to the right size. 1 hour ago, Horation said: This sounds a little like the ship of Theseus ; will replacing one part of a boat each day until all parts have been replaced result in a new boat or not? The nice thing about a computer program is you can save the old file if you ever wanted to compare how much it has changed. 1 hour ago, Horation said: This sounds a little like the ship of Theseus ; will replacing one part of a boat each day until all parts have been replaced result in a new boat or not? I start a microscale build, and it ends up way larger than I intend, despite being microscale. I think its because I just try to add to much detail. For example, in this build of the Lion Knights' Castle, it is really only like half or quarter scale, which isn't as small as I originally intended: https://www.flickr.com/photos/197227990@N07/53433612762/in/dateposted-public/ Edited August 6, 2024 by Math Wizard Quote

I personally prefer the minimalist figs that you built. I just told Sydney the max number of pieces and then I added the decal ones so that we didn’t go over the piece count. Quote

You surprised me with your solution. Also, @Mister Phes I think this was my 50th post! Quote

And even if its not as small as you hoped, it would surely be less than 1/20 of the original 4600 part count! Edited August 6, 2024 by YellowFrog Quote

It's about 600 parts, so roughly 13% of the original Quote
Horation Posted August 6, 2024 Posted August 6, 2024 (edited) Well, that's much better than my scaled down version of enchanted island, it used over 100 parts vs 400 for the orginial, so 25%, and yours looks much closer to the original, too! I can only suggest merging plates and bricks where applicable to reduce part count. since that seems like a tough problem for anyone working on micros (including SevenDeadlyStreamers's next build. SevenDeadlyStreamers Posted August 7, 2024 Author Posted August 7, 2024 I’m glad I could help Math Wizard get to that comment count as they helped me with the three Cs! I know it has taken some time but I’ve submitted Sydney’s final entry in this contest! Keep those comments and critiques coming everyone! Quote
BardDandelion Posted August 7, 2024 Posted August 7, 2024 Such a nice microscale build! I really like the usage of Classic Castle feathers for flags in the ship. Usage of Harry Potter printed tile is also great, it really fits here as an ornament on the sail. This is a rare example of situation when sticker would be better - these HP printed tiles do not come in white or tan if they were sticker we could apply them to tile of any color. Quote
YellowFrog Posted August 7, 2024 Posted August 7, 2024 I often find that micro-scale builds are more challenging than full-scale ones, as each and every element makes a big difference. Quote
Horation Posted August 8, 2024 Posted August 8, 2024 @BardDandelion, that's where I disagree, since in my book it would be far less impressive if they just made a sticker for every single part which needed it, this shows much more creativity. I considered doing my own version of 6277 in microscale, but all I could think of was using stickers rather than building elements in certain spots, so it wasn't going to be much in the way of competition. Shhh don’t tell anyone, lol But I guess I could have used a standard tile and applied a decal. My daughter did most of the searching for parts so that one looked the most appropriate for what was already available on BrickLink Studio. Yes, the Skulls Eye Schooner was especially challenging since it was hard to find the right scale for certain elements. To do this Trading Post, I found a couple plates to use as a template and let my daughter try to fit the buildings onto it. Stickers are an AFOL’s worst enemy after all, lol. Whenever I submit something to LEGO Ideas I tend to use decals with the hope that if it ever was turned into an official set, they would make printed elements and not use stickers. Quote
Horation Posted August 9, 2024 Posted August 9, 2024 Oh, you've submitted builds on Lego Ideas? I'd love to see them, since if they are half as good as your entries they deserve quite a lot of votes! Quote

BardDandelion Posted August 12, 2024 Posted August 12, 2024 @Horation @SevenDeadlyStreamers In general, yes. I also prefer prints over stickers. Although, stickers are easier to remove (sometimes parts with sticker/prints are common and signicifantly cheaper on BL than "naked" version), they could be applied to different part (to another color or completely different shape). Stickers sheet also get handy when you want to get some "custom" sticker. Some people just cut parts of the sticker sheets to get shapes they need, not only from the stickers themself but also from the white background or the color border around the sticker. Quote

Just so long as you don’t apply the sticker over multiple parts! I still have an old Shell Gas Station set where they used to put the logo on top of a 3 brick stack. Quote
Horation Posted August 12, 2024 Posted August 12, 2024 That's always annoying to deal with, but I personally find that it's not how I have to put the sticker that matters, but the quantity! In both recent and older racing sets, there were always loads of stickers which made everything fiddly to put properly. Quote
