Hello!

Another old set I thought of again is the 1872 Imperial Guard Camp. I know, again, you can't recognise the original set, but when I picked this one and started thinking about how it should look, this is what came to mind. Two soldiers holed up at the base of a dilapidated building, if they're going to be on duty in a place like this. Presumably it's some kind of punishment for them, because who would want to be here?

I love this, it's so fun and full of great details!

I do have a few suggestions:

  • There's too many different plant/flower types around.  In a build this size, I would limit it to just one (in addition to the palm tree).  The canopy is already providing red and white, so you really don't need flowers at all.  I would limit the leaves and vines to just one or two types as well.
  • The campfire doesn't look like it would be easy to cook on, and the flames should probably point the same way.  They need a rat or something roasting over the fire.
  • The canopy is so great.  Just everything about it, from the tooth bricks on the edge, the rounded part, the supports, it's the best part of this build.  But I wish it matched the colors of the Lagoon Lock-up canopy (blue and red) instead of being red and white.
  • Some dark tan for wet sand and medium azure water plates would be great.
  • I like the broken wall, but it looks fragile, and I don't see why an actively maintained post would have a new, shiny, canopy but old, run down walls.  The middle section at an angle is great, but I would swap out the cheese wedge for a 1x1 cone -- a rounded column shouldn't break down into a triangle, should it?
  • No flag?

I really like what you've accomplished with such a small build.  The last picture with the passed out captain and the partying soldier is so great, exactly what the original set was going for!

It's true I didn't recognise the set at first, you've really boosted the size and the piece count here! :pir-thumb: But I really do like the outcome. Now it looks like a real camp and not simply a piece of rock or whatever the original was meant to represent. The white and red 'roof' is a really nice touch, and so is the lantern. It's great that the walls are not perpendicular to each other. I like the ornamentation above the windows, and the 'battle damage' makes the scene more dynamic. Actually it makes you think that this is a part of a larger fortress or something which got destroyed by the enemy.

I would move the barrel inside the building and make the bonfire less regularly shaped, or maybe add some burnt wood around it. And I think it would be a good idea to use tan tiles instead of plates for just the part where those guys sleep, as the sand would be flat due to their weight. Other than that, it is a nice little build.

A lovely creation-I've seen really large fortresses that had less character than this super-detailed little Inn!

1- The theme (story)

One can see what is going on right away-an old outpost where the soldiers are bored and have started their own Inn-perhaps just leave the bottles on the side along with a barrel, since this is supposed to be a children's toy, and right now these soldiers seem drunk! Not the most brand-friendly...  As others have said, make it seem more used and less new. make that wall with the cheese slopes seem nearly completely gone by removing the top part, and add some sand red here and there-it's the right mix of classic red and modern palettes, and I agree with Dreamweb, the bonfire seems like it's about to go out.

2- The build

There are tons of nice details, but the build seems...too clean,(I'll admit some of it is due to the digital render) add some colour instead of that white, it seems pristine but this is a run-down outpost, remove some white here and there and replace it (or leave it empty, like a hole...)

Overall, a small set done well.

Very nice and well-built Imperial Guard Camp! :pir-classic: A little more wood at the fireplace would be nice. But other than that, I wouldn't change anything. I would buy the set.

I like how you extrapolated this lovely scene from the tiny original set.

The makeshift camp with the run down fort being improved with a quickly constructed shelter looks very good, I like how the plant life has taken over the destroyed architecture.

For improvements I think the non-yellow flowers should be swited to yellow - this makes more consistency and is a nice hint to the yellow elements used in the original to represent sand.

I'd also make the fire look a little less wild, perhaps change it out with candle pieces or maybe some trans orange studs to make it look more smouldering. We don't want our soldiers getting too hot!

Lastly, maybe give one of the soldiers a fan to keep themselves cool, I think that would be a fun little detail :pir_laugh2:

I would 100% buy this set, love every bit of it, gives me proper old school set vibes but with a modern polish.

That being said - the walls seem a bit fragile? Are they somehow connected together / secured so they won't fall down? I cannot see any pieces that could support them?

Sets like this one make this competition so exciting!

Is there a chance for instructions please?

Thank you very much! 😉🏴☠️🍻 It's possible that when it reaches its final version, there will be instructions. I am thinking more and more about making a CFE (community feedback edition) version of it

Instructions would be fun! It uses a lot of nice techniques.

While I'm at it, is there any way to add foliage behind (on the walls' side)? Since I think it would look more credible if there were to be plants on that side, or maybe even a few pieces stuck to the walls, to make it seem poorly maintained.

In the current version there is no way to do this, because it's not designed that way, but if there is an instruction at some point, you will be able to rebuild it where you want. 🍻🏴☠️😉😀

So I never had this set as a kid, so I don’t have the fond memory of it.
However, I love what you’ve done with this! It looks so darn good!

so let’s go!

pros:

the awning looks great

the palm tree build (even if it’s not legos current design for pirates)

the ruins look incredible, especially the curved section

fantastic looking rock work

cons:

(These are really trivial and I’m knit picking at best)

I know this is a dumb complaint, but a slight over abundance of plant life

a little bit of medium azure water would have helped

the wooden window frame in the ruin feel a bit unnecessary

all in all though, brilliant build and I’d buy this set for sure.

You should try to make some of your own MOCs in the vein of these smaller pirates sets. These are really nice.

Thank you! 😉👍🏴☠️🍻

My oh my you really seem to pump these entries out! (while I can't force myself to even start one) Anyway here are my suggestions, add a ripped part to the canvas tarp (cause it looks like they have been there for some time). Second, add some water under the building and some wildlife with it. I love the broken walls and the tree. My only other suggestion is to update the minifigures. Anyway, Happy building :)

Very neat remake, but there is something missing when i think of it as a set and as an outpost with some kind of a purpose.

I mean, aesthetically this is such a nice structure, having those walls with windows resting on a rock is a great idea and that sun roof is a nice touch, to make soldier's duty a little bit more pleasant, tho... it seems very crowded with equipment and it's dubious what's it actually there for! Sp I'd try to improve it by adding elements that could emphasize either it's official side for which the government has paid for or soldiers' quarters that those two fellows might have built for themselves.

So, ff this is a real outpost i would add more weapons that it could actually look a bit more respectul as a military facility ;)

If it's just a place that soldiers simply picked to rest maybe there could be more things for their pleasue, a hammock spread between wall and a rock or a small table by that lower wall with more food and drinks?

What comes to my mind, seeing that lantern, is it that it could work best if there was a bar added and it could be transformed into a sort of customs control on the road, a tollgate, where people coming to and out of town could be stopped and checked for contraband etc.
