Funny how the castle theme is so "in demand" and BDP9 has castles left and right, yet MTS is rotting in one corner. Hope Lego learned its lesson in price gouging.

BLDP are a rather niche product compared to a normal Lego set, I have no interest in them and I am probably not alone. I addition a casual buyer will never stumble upon them in a shop. However you are right Lego missed the mark with this one, something closer to the prelim and it would have sold a lot more I think.
It still is on sale and that is saying a lot, many people still think it is to expensive for what you get..

I was on a talk by TLG in SFW about getting a job at Lego. Basically it was how they hire designers. And what was mentioned most times was the need to be able to build smaller (like one with fantastic MOCs can be useless as a Lego designer) and MTS is a perfect example. The prelim is what you like to make, then they reduce the budget and force you to build something cheaper and we end up with MTS on a budget..

He returned in budget form without the iconic wolfpack shield.

I have to admit I'm a bit torn on the wolfpack shield. On the one hand, they're vagabonds. Those normally don't carry around much in the way of heraldry, so makeshift shields or no shields at all would fit better. OTOH, if I really want more shields, I could try to purchase the BDP6 Wolpack Tower before the weekend is over. All in all, I still have a couple of the old Wolfpack shields in my possession, and don't need an extra dozen Wolfpack torso's.

The primary target customer for LEGO is still children and they tire of long and complex sets very easily. When it starts to become a chore rather than a joy, LEGO has failed. So this is a vital skill. I think they often do it so well with Friends, which I still hold to be the best overall theme that LEGO produces - creative builds, looks amazing, terrific play value.

But the 18+ marketing allows them to do more detailed sets. As such, I don't see why they felt the need to simplify this. Maybe it was purely for budget reasons, but again, it seems odd, given the huge price points of many other sets.

I bought it a while ago and think it's generally good. Yes, I wish it was a bit less expensive for what it is, or added more animals, or both! I don't feel tempted to buy a second for MOCs though, as it's not great value. Unlike the Ideas Viking village which is terrific value by comparison, and has been down to an astonishingly low price of $85 in the US recently. I got another one of those for MOCs!

Edit: Actually, you know what, it may be really unfair to say MTS isn't decent value. I think it's the comparison with VV that makes it feel poor, or the downgrade from the prelim. Neither of which is terribly fair. And yet, here we are.
