The Marquis - Origins - Chapter 3: The First Mate

The story so far:

Chapter 1 - The Interrogation
Chapter 2 - Early Days
Chapter 3 - The First Mate (you are here)

800x656.jpg

Lady Bonny: Next thing I know is that he famously appeared in Oleon…

Interrogator: Not so fast.
You said the Marquis was working his way up the ranks. What does that mean?

Lady Bonny: Well, he learned the tricks of the trade. ... erm … the merchants’ trade… the trade business

800x1250.jpg

Interrogator: Like what?

Lady Bonny: Well, you see, while his colleagues were handling the ship he was initially in charge of the weaponry.

Interrogator: Weaponry?

Lady Bonny: Well, … even merchants need to defend themselves from time to time. You know, there are these...

Interrogator: Pirates?

Lady Bonny: Shhh. Don't mention them. The walls have ears!

640x431.jpg

Interrogator (glancing uneasy behind him): Right. So he learned how to handle some weapons.

Lady Bonny: And then he learned how to play cards too…   Mostly how to play poker. But “Uno” and “Old Maid” as well.

800x607.jpg

Lady Bonny:  And it is interesting – he still seems to play in the same way today. In the first round he looks at the cards as if he has never seen them before.
Then, as the game moves on he seems to get more comfortable, taking more risks – until he finally wins as if he knew all the cards.

Spoiler

Take a look at this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qyJomdyjyvM   if you want to find out how good monkeys are when it comes to memory,

This has explained a lot to me about the marquis! :monkey:

Interrogator: Stop talking about those card games now. Do you think I can do multi-tasking or multi-thinking?  I want to know about his career!

Lady Bonny: Well…

800x602.jpg

Lady Bonny: After lengthy discussions about the terms "North", "South", "West" and "East", which the Marquis– as he would later be called – obviously had initially disregarded as bourgeois categories,
he had to demonstrate his navigation skills ....

800x604.jpg

Lady Bonny: … in order to be promoted to Sailing Master. He earned his sailor’s hat and wore it with pride.

Interrogator: I love those career stories!

Lady Bonny: Next thing I know is that he famously appeared in Oleon…

Interrogator: Not so fast. You were still explaining how the Marquis was learning his skills!

Lady Bonny: Right, right.

800x600.jpg

Lady Bonny:  You see, these …ehm … merchants had a lone island as a .... home base. Where they kept their ... merchandries.

800x618.jpg

Lady Bonny:  And it was there, where the Marquis further improved his sword fighting skills.

800x600.jpg

Interrogator: And – how good was he?

Lady Bonny: Quite good, obviously. It earned him the promotion to First Mate.
It was said that he never lost his balance - as if he had additional hands or something - and that he was quite fast with his sword.
He treasured that weapon and was never seen without it again.
                    And life was good then.

Interrogator: This sounds as if then came a change?

Lady Bonny: Yes….

(to be continued)

What may happen next?  Stay tuned!

next chapter

Spoiler

I think that video explains a lot about how the Marquis plays poker by simply remembering every card he has seen.:pir_laugh2:

"Old Maid" is called "schwarzer Peter" in German (= "black Peter"). It is a card game even more complex than poker :pir-laugh:

The 2 guys have to row while he's doing nothing. :pir_laugh2: Interesting continuation of the story.

I really like the second to last photo. The beach with the clouds in the background looks very beautiful.

Black rowboats?!  I don't remember ever seeing that before.  I love how you turned it over.  Very nice secret beach for your erm... merchants.

But what's happening next?  Is this idyllic life going to end?  I feel sorry for the Marquis already...

Black rowboat = White Cap Bay PoTC set.

But it is not a boat. It is a hut!  A ...  merchant's house! :pir-grin:

And something will happen... I fear. :pir-look:
