H all, I am having some troubles with the gears the Pimp up my Land Rover that I am building.

In certain gears, it won't run smoothly. I put it in the R Hi 1st gear. When you push the car forwards, it is like a spring is tensioning and when you let go, the car actually rolls back.

I've already rebuilt the rear gearbox. I'm not sure how to figure out what the problem is. It is very hard to follow the gears and figure out cause and effect in the car.

In D (Drive) the problem goes away in the low gears and the car runs smoothly, in the high gears the problem is still there but somewhat less pronounced.

If anyone has a great clue or can explain how I can figure it out, it would be appreciated.

Otherwise than this, I'm having a blast building it, great work @jb70.

I have found this happens in some gearboxes where you have an idler gear (gear with smooth hole) that has a side load on it (like when driving another gear) whilst it's running on an axle that's also turning as part of the same drive train at a different speed. The more you try to push forward the more side loading you get on the idler gear and the whole thing locks up especially in lower gears (one of many reasons we need more sizes of clutch gears!). I don't know if this is your issue but try tapping on all the different idler gears with the tip of a screw driver while under a small load, does it move a little then?

Thanks @allanp, I had a look at all the idler gears but they seem fine. Thanks for helping me out. I'll keep on trying and if all else fails I'll just keep rebuilding.

BTW I love your avatar from the 8868.

I think...I can give you another suggestion: you can rebuild the Defender as many times as you want because it is truly one addictive build. Howevr, instead of building it again and again just for the sake of making the gearbox right why not incorporate a relatively simpler 2-speed (with Hi/Lo) or a 4-speed one with Neutral? Making the gearbox right is not only thing to look for it when it comes to this set. The way the entire drivetrain is designed matters. Don't let the gearbox spoil the fun of having the Defender. Tons of modification options are there

Thanks :classic:

Maybe, instead of disassembling and rebuilding the whole thing, do you have the spare parts to rebuild just the gearbox on its own? Might help to troubleshoot it.
