Hi folks, been a while since I was active around here but life happens. I'm currently looking into the possibility of doing a research project which would hopefully involve taking a trip to Billund during the second quarter next year (hopefully covid safe), and since I've never been myself I figured I would ask those who have more experience.

I'm happy to read any and all suggestions, but I'm particularly curious about flight advice (where to go through, etc) as I'm from the US, and transport when in Billund. Thanks in advance!

Well, maybe a little more input regarding your overall travel plans may help to make "good" suggestions ...

  • Are you planning on going "just" to Billund, or do you want to merge that with a Denmark/EU/etc tourist type round trip?
  • If the latter: What countries are you planning on visiting? See list of arrivals flights to Billund below
  • If the former: Have you googled the Greater Billund Area already? Personally, I love green grass and flat land very much (I was born rather close to that area in Northern Germany - cows and such) - but if you don't: Billund consists essentially of a domestic airport, "Legoland", and an about 250 acre large town. Do you want to stay in Billund the entire visit?
  • Billund Lufthavn (airport) is quite busy for its size (Scheduled arrivals for tomorrow: https://www.bll.dk/en-en/planlaeg-rejsen/rejseinfo/ankomster) - and as you can see, some flights are from Paris (CDG), London (Stansted), Amsterdam, Frankfurt ...
  • The next bigger cities around Billund are Varde/Esbjerg, Vejle, Kolding, ... all in public transportation reach, about 20 to 35 miles distance. Staying there, you can use either public transportation (bus/train) or of course a rental car. The bus/train service to Billund is quite good, as Billund has an airport .

In essence: It depends on your plans, I guess :classic:

And others around here on EB may even know much better! I just visited Billund a couple of times over the past years - we spend our vacation almost every year on the most beautiful island of the entire world (Fanø :pir-love:) - maybe @1974, @dtomsen, etc. etc. are more knowledgeable than I am!

Best wishes
Thorsten

Merde: Just saw that you are planning for a "trip" to Billund within a research project (somewhere else, right? I thought you want to do some TLG related research ;))

You can fly from several major US hubs directly to Billund (NYC, LAX, Miami, LV & SF)

When in Billund just use the local busses. Renting a car is stupid expensive in Denmark and Billund is smaller than an average Wallmart anyway

Well, I too have never been you and I doubt you'll find many others that have experienced you as you self have. I guess you'd need a real life version of "Being John Malkovich" for that sorta thing  :pir_tong2:

@Toastie @1974

Thank you! I am planning to do TLG related research on more of the engineering side, and I only have about a weeklong window to be out of of the country, so I can't turn it into a grand tour of Europe unfortunately.

If you are not planning on spending any time in London (Leicester Square store, the home of Lester!) then I wouldn't bother going via London unless you have a changeover at a single airport. Arriving into Heathrow and leaving via Stansted adds significant time and cost, much easier to go via Amsterdam or Paris CDG or one of the German airports if it is a single airport stopover.

If you can get a flight directly to Billund from the US, I recommend that even if it means getting to a hub in the US first. It’s generally better to get the shorter leg of a journey out of the way before the longer haul leg.

Once in Billund, it’s easy to get around by bus. I took one from outside Legoland to the airport a long time ago. I don’t recall it being a problem. The service was punctual though not very frequent.
