SteamSewnEmpire Posted June 2, 2020 Posted June 2, 2020 I actually have a couple of questions here: first, I guess the above is a battery box, but based on the video I saw, it apparently doubles as an IR receiver? What part is it? Is it sold by itself, or in a kit? Second, is there a Powered Up splitter available (either from Lego or otherwise)? I can fit one battery box into the diesel I am working on, but not two... and I would really like to have working lights as well. Thank you for any help. Quote
TeriXeri Posted June 2, 2020 Posted June 2, 2020 Looks like a Powered Up Hub, which receives Bluetooth signals. Quote
mindstormsboi Posted June 2, 2020 Posted June 2, 2020 (edited) Specifically, that is Electric 9V Battery Box Powered Up Bluetooth HUB with Light Bluish Gray Bottom on Bricklink, and the remote is Electric, Powered Up Bluetooth Speed Remote Control Unit with Light Bluish Gray Base. The only motor that exists with it is Electric, Train Motor 9V RC Train with Integrated Powered Up Attachment, Orange Wheel Holders. All three components appear in the 60197 Passenger Train and 60198 Cargo Train (Imo 60197 is quite fun). There are technic variations too. The technic variant of the hub is Electric Battery Box Powered Up Bluetooth Hub with Dark Bluish Gray Bottom, and there are actually two motors for technic: Electric, Motor - Powered Up, L and Electric, Motor - Powered Up, XL. The remote works with both hubs, and all of the motors work with either of the hubs as well. In fact, there is also an app for mobile that can be used for controlling either hub using Bluetooth. Port splitters are from third-party sources and are not made by Lego (in fact port splitters are available for EV3 and made by third-party too). There are no lights available for PU other than the status light at the moment however there are lights available for Power Functions which are officially made by Lego and maybe you can use them with whatever MOC of yours you want (lights can't connect to PU so you need PF hub too). Hope this helps! Edited June 2, 2020 by mindstormsboi Quote
dr_spock Posted June 2, 2020 Posted June 2, 2020 You can get the Powered UP hub individually off LEGO S@H, Bricklink, etc. : https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/hub-88009 You can control it with your smartdevice and the Powered UP app and/or use the PU remote. Quote

Hope this helps! It helped a lot. Does that mean that https://www.lego.com/en-us/product/simple-medium-linear-motor-45303 won't work with that HUB? If so, I'm sunk. Thanks to everyone else, too. The site tells it's from Powered-Up, so obviously the answer is yes. It's strange how this motor didn't appear when searching for PU components on Bricklink. Usually when electronic Lego components have the same wire end and same wire port for it, they usually work. The wire end of a PU motor looks similar to the wire end of that motor you linked so I suppose you're probably right. In fact I have 17101 which has motors and a hub and the wire ports as well as the wires themselves are exactly alike to te PU ones. That means I can use the motors from set 17101 on a PU hub and it will work totally fine (I actually tested for myself). On certain circumstances however, such as this one, there might need to be cable converters involved even if the wires look similar. Quote

How it works depend on which device you use to control it. If you use your smart phone or tablet, you can have on/off full speed or variable speed control depending on the program you use or code in the Powered UP App. If you use the PU remote, it can only go full on or full off. You can create a program in the PU App to read the PU remote buttons and send the appropriate motor speed command to the hub. Alternatively, you can make an adapter to fool it thinking it is a PU train motor attached. Quote
