Hi all! I'm new to the forum because I've recently started to create MOC's and so far I'm completely addicted! This is the first modular I've built so I wanted to show you and ask for feedback. I'm sure there's still room for improvement!

I'm hoping to make a design worth submitting to Ideas! (If the contemporary styling won't throw people off, that is!)

Thanks for checking out my post!!

Really cool building! I'm sure it goes without saying that the shaping is the real star of the show! I especially like the semi pyramidal roofing. The color scheme is nice albeit a little generic. Could use a tad bit more detail, maybe some windowsills and/or an AC unit on the outside? Although if you want to submit it to Ideas, you might not be able to add that many more things otherwise it would exceed the 3,000 parts limit.

One other feedback would be on the presentation, especially with the interior. It's quite difficult (at least for me), to tell what part of the interior goes where in relation to the building and the pictures are also quite claustrophobic and dark. Kinda nitpicking but I think small stuff like this matters.

Thanks for your feedback! I've got arond 400ish parts to play with before I hit the magic 3000 so I can try and add some window sills (although I've never made those before) and an AC unit.

What would your tips be on interior pics? I've got some top down renders but it's a very cramped space for the perspective camera to fit into. The lighting from the rendering engine in stud.io doesn't help either..

I don't mind nitpicks on the small stuff! If I submit it to Ideas I want all the boxes ticked!

Also: congrats on 10k supporters on Ideas! I am one of them!

You're welcome! I haven't used Stud.io for rendering before, so I can't give specific tips, but perhaps you can zoom out the camera much more (might have to remove some walls for that, just like how you would photograph in real life.) For example, in the bedroom, the camera is looking at it vertically which feels pretty cramp, so it's ideal to change the angle so it's looking at the room horizontally, downside is, one of the side walls would have to be sacrificed from the image. (A dilemma which I've had to deal with way too many times :laugh_hard:) If there's no other way to adjust the lighting in Stud.io you can use a photo-editing software to increase the brightness, while turning down the contrast (otherwise it would be an eyesore), although the windows are already very bright, so you might want to have them toned down first. Post-processing can surely make a world of difference!

(Woah nice!! Thanks so much!)

You're welcome! I put some stuff on Ideas myself already but I'm planning on upping the game with this project. How did you get to 10k?

I'm starting on the modifications today btw. You mentioned the "generic" colour scheme. Any combination/addition you'd like to see?

Oh nice, mind sharing the link to those Ideas projects of yours?

I suppose it was luck that got me to 10k, I didn't really promote my project that much (mostly because I didn't know how to), the most that I did was to have a fantastic build and presentation right from the beginning. An attractive thumbnail image is definitely crucial, as it's the only thing that will get people to either scroll past your project or click on it (and hopefully support.) Of course, I also leaned on a very popular franchise. Although I am looking forward to doing a non-licensed Product Idea, I think that's where I'll really get schooled.

For the colors scheme, it's kinda tricky. What you got is actually perfectly fine, almost all contemporary houses uses the same color scheme, so using some other colors may throw the look off. Although it just means that the colors wouldn't be a major selling point (unless the generic color scheme is the selling point). I can't really say what colors to add as there are like a hundred different factors, but if you're looking to add more pizazz, I'd recommend experimenting some more with the colors. Make a separate copy of the model and have fun vandalizing it with all kinds of colors, and something really amazing may just turn out.

By all means! I tried my hand at some licensed ideas (although none as widely popular as Spongebob) so this will be my first unlicensed Ideas submission. My submissions so far:

Traction City London (Mortal Engines)

The Dreamatorium (Community)

I'll mess around with some colours and see if I find anything good! Ad the thumbnail is definitely a good tip! Time to brush up on my Photoshop skills! I'm just afraid modern style modulars won't get much support because they don't fit within the existing line-up. I've seen quite a few stellar modern modular buildings but never with much support.

I like the unusual shape and all the angles you've done here. Good work!

Thank you! I've added more details (window sills, AC unit) so I'll upload some new renders here soon.

I've updated the interior and renders! I did mess around with the colours somewhat but ultimately came back to what is was.

Ah, those interior shots looks much better now! Feels more spacious. Nice job with the additions of more little details too. Well, at least now you know what colors work and what doesn't.

Thanks for your advice in this! I'll be submitting it to Ideas soon!

Awesome MOC!  The shaping is unusual and impressive - it is in no way a basic square Lego house!  On the topic of colours, if you give the exterior a more black/white look, any other colours are even more contrasting than on greys or browns.  As the exterior is rather black/grey/white/brown oriented, why not try giving lots of colour to the interior.  To be fair, there’s probably quite a lot in there but the pictures make it hard to see.  But if lack of colours dissuades possible supporters, then making the interior pop can improve it.

Thank you for your feedback! I've since submitted this MOC to Ideas so I'll make a new topic soon with the "finished" product (if that isn't against forum rules). I can still make incremental upgrades so I can update the interior and try to make it pop a bit more in time!

Removing some of the walls helps to allow light in.

I did that for my new pictures! I'll post a new topic soon with the finished product if that's allowed

That's really nice. Great job on all those weird angles.

Thank you! I wanted something a little different from the official modulars!
