I'm really interested in adding lights to my sets. Is it better to use any of the pre made sets out there or custom build one? Thanks for any advice people have.

It depends on how comfortable you are with soldering and basic circuits. A homemade setup will give you more versatility and can be cheaper. LEDs are available at most hobby stores for pennies each (3mm will fit in an open stud, 5mm in a technic pin hole).  I've found that standard 5mm LEDs are a good fit for most applications:

As long as you don't mind a bit of soldering and splicing wires, custom is the way to go!
