Hi all,

Here’s the WIP thread for my entry - currently titled “Taxidermy”

I’m a big fan of all the films (originals and the recent Fury Road) and also the PS/Xbox game so all these combined are the source for my inspiration.

So I thought if I was going to survive the wasteland what vehicle is common enough for scrap parts but also durable. As I’m a Brit and originally from the South not too far from London I had the perfect answer ... a Taxi or a Black Cab. Specifically I’m going to try and model it on the older  FX4 Taxi but it’ll only be a guide as I’m not a skilled modeller.

The Taxi will of course end up being modified ... a V8 for starters. It’ll run using Sbrick, I’m not sure either 2 M or XL motors for power.

Work today was around getting the overall proportions of the vehicle. So I can then start working on chassis. I’m moderately happy with what I’ve got so far.

So time for an update as it’s a week on. I haven’t got as far as a lot of people but then I haven’t had much time to work on this as things have been busy at work.

I was having trouble with working freehand to get the shapes right so I’ve gone full scale modelling and from a print out of a set of blueprints and a good old fashioned ruler (or rule for some) I’ve started again but this time in Stud.io.

So I’m hoping to build this model in stages. Get a body to look (at least a bit) like the Taxi. Then work out how to get the drive train inside. Then start Mad-Maxing it by putting the suspension on. Then doing some Max-mods.

So what do you think so far? Nothing is joined together yet, I haven’t worked out if/how to make the doors openable. And I’m not happy with the amount of half height beams for the rear quarter panel.

I really like the plan you proposed to build your car. Stock version and then make it fit the theme - perfect, almost like real one.

The body is really nice and recognizeable.

Keep up good work!

Mini update from me. Only had the odd hour here and there over the last week but managed to get a couple of hours in today and this is where I am.

so as you’ll see the majority of the Taxi part is done, at least in terms of shape. The I started on the rear platform. Next challenge will be doors and rear suspension. Don’t think I’ll get anything done in the next week as I’m on a course for the week and next weekend it’s the better half’s birthday and we’re away.

I think you nailed shape

Looking forward to see your development. I know what it means having no time or being constantly distracted ...

Just a minor update from me for today. Managed to spend a few hours on this and it may not look like much progress on the surface but the doors and rear quarter panel are all new and now hopefully coherent. And for a tease inside to show you where the motors are going and my start for the front suspension. I’m thinking the springs may end up attached to the lower arms and I think may need spacing out a bit, at least to get some decent turning circle. So I think the next point in time I can worK on this I may start to build this in physical brick to check a few things out. Not sure what wheels to use yet either, either “standard” technic or the defender ones.

Time for an update for me to show you all what I’ve managed to get done in the last week and a half since my last update.

The answer is on the surface not a lot. I took the decision last weekend to start building in physical to see how things were fitting together. This showed I’d got a lot of missing pins or pins in conflict hidden in my CAD model.

Yesterday I managed to have a major session and with a couple of hours today I now have the front suspension complete, the Fake engine connected in and the front doors are no longer floating.

Next jobs are:

Finish the front end

Work out the rear suspension

Work out how to attach the rear quarter panels

mount the servo motor, battery and sbrick

make a seat, dashboard and mount the steering wheel

Mad Max it further !

enjoy the photos ...

So the problem with trying to work out the rear suspension, not trying to have the wheels too far from the body and how do the forces react, means I’ve totally redone the rear quarter area. Hopefully tomorrow night I rip the physical model apart for this “small” update.

New problems ... body bending stiffness (ironic if you knew my job) ... and Time !

this is looking like an awesome mad taxi. Is there rear suspension? its a bit hard to tell how that spring will operate?

I haven’t worked out how to connect springs in Stud.io properly. The free end attaches to the 2L red axle you can just see on the rear axle behind the disc

I get it now! also the top suspension arms are missing from the picture that attach to the top of the dogbone? it makes sense now, just about all the suspension components are outside the chassis

No it doesn’t have an upper arm on the rear suspension. The hub is rigidly fixed to the lower arm, so the wheel camber angle changes.

Yes our skilled wasteland engineer has put all the rear suspension outside the body. Mainly as there’s 2 XL motors just inside the bodywork here. I’ll try and create a chassis only render at some point.

So I’ve had a good day of building thanks to Dennis (a storm), I started by trying to get the servo motor, battery and Sbrick mounted. Then worked on the front end to get the grille designed and then finally I worked on some Mad Max adds. So here are a couple of teaser images. Plan is to try and squeeze a drivers seat and steering wheel in tomorrow.

That's nice step forward even in meteorology. Very pleased to here that. Few months ago one (lady) meteorologist who went to retirement said that it was actually idea of one lady to name storms with lady names to show husband's who is in charge and if they do not behave properly punishment is in the way  but now I remember there way Andrew in U.S... I hope that I did not offend any our members who has this name. @Seasider sorry for bit off-topic.

Drivers seat and steering wheel done. I think I’m finished, just a single sticker to make when I find my sticker sheet! Just need to hope there’s some better weather/light next weekend for some nice photos. Part of me is also thinking that once this competition is over I might try and turn this into a proper Austin TX4, but most probably manual and not powered.

So a couple of final details ... managed to squeeze a simple dashboard in which was good as it also provided a screen rail to separate the engine from cabin better ... and also an add of a custom sticker. I’ll hope weather and light is good tomorrow for taking final photos and doing a video.
