Hi everyone,

as I am just out of my dark ages and "my" LEGO-time was in the 1980's, I just wanted to ask if there is a kind of a commonly agreed size of houses/buildings. I do not mean the size of modern modular buildings or the size of great MOC's, but the "ordinary" classic LEGO-house with its open rear to play inside.

Like in the old Western-sets, the houses of Gold City Junction are 12 or 16 studs by 6 studs and 6 to 7 bricks high. Same measurements are for old Classic Castle-sets or Classic Town-sets.

So - if I want to catch the "classic style" in a modern MOC, would a size by around 6 to 8 studs by a length of somewhere between 12 an 20 studs be fine?

Thanks for your answers.

More recent (2017-2018) Creator 3-in-1 sets have used 8x8 and 8x16 sections that can be interchanged, that size also has been used for sections in a few other themes/sets like the 2018 City Hospital and a LEGO Store set :

3-in-1 system was also called "modular" at the time, not to be confused with Creator Expert modulars.

In 2019, the Creator 3-in-1 set uses multiple 12x12 sections that have about 8x12 being the building itself.

I know those aren't "Classic" standards but might help with some open-backed buildings.

TeriXeri, thanks a lot for this hints.

Judging the "Sea Horse Inn" here:

or Alessios's house here:

I would say that any measure between 8 - 10 studs max. by 16 - 20 studs max. would be fine.

Creator 3in1 of recent years are not as good as those some years ago like 31012 and 4996 (These two sets are the best 3in1 in my opinion for its value)

Remember it also depends on what you want to do with them. If they are just facades to depict a street, they can be quite shallow in depth, can be empty and don't even need floors. Whereas if you want to furnish them and be able to get your hands in and play, then you need more depth and room to place your furniture.

There are also the few recent "town square" sets . Like:

 City Square

City Corner

I enjoy the aesthetic of this style of building in a city. It feels Classic, it looks good and it allows for plenty of play value.

Okay, personally I would then move to turn them into something a little more robust, not quite a modular building but certainly something with four walls and a full roof.

Not to state the obvious, but I think there are basically two distinct scales. The standard open back (or what I call 80's style) and the modular style.

Yes, and as I wrote in my OP, I mean this "classic style".

Thank you all four your input, especially the hints for the modern town sets with their open back.

6 - 8 by 16 - 20 studs seems an reasonable size for me. I will go for that.
