Seasider Posted October 21, 2019 Posted October 21, 2019 Firstly sorry if this is discussed somewhere already but I’ve had an email this morning about a Lego Originals launch in London and I’ve go no clue as to what it is. The email says it’s £109.99 and a limited edition collectible, so perhaps not a set? Which gets stranger when the link to book a slot at the event talks about wooden. so does anyone know what this is ? Quote
MAB Posted October 21, 2019 Posted October 21, 2019 It appears to be a wooden collectable and if you are near Covent Garden at the right time then you can get yours first (for £109.99). From the language they have used, it sounds like this will be available elsewhere and it remains to be seen what they mean by "rare". How many will sign up to buy an unspecified wooden collectable at over £100? Enough it seems, as they are already fully booked. Quote
Kapowza Posted October 21, 2019 Posted October 21, 2019 Quote Gallery where we will be showcasing Lego designers creative versions of this rare home decor design piece to inspire your creativity makes it sound like a wooden minifigure for people to customise. Like a Bearbrick. Quote
Lucarex Posted October 24, 2019 Posted October 24, 2019 (edited) It’s supposed to be a wooden “home decoration” minifig but about the size of a minifig alarm clock, so about 20cm tall. Edited October 24, 2019 by Lucarex Quote
Agent 86 Posted October 31, 2019 Posted October 31, 2019 I wonder why it has yellow plastic hands? I was really excited about a “home decor” wooden mini figure, but the hands just seem so glaringly out of place. I’m guessing it was some kind of safety issue? Quote
Lucarex Posted October 31, 2019 Posted October 31, 2019 Awful, how disappointing. A million better ways to spend £110 on Lego. Quote
MAB Posted October 31, 2019 Posted October 31, 2019 Are the hands plastic, or just wood dyed yellow. They don't look plastic to me. Quote
Lucarex Posted October 31, 2019 Posted October 31, 2019 They don’t look painted wood to me. Either way, plastic or not, it looks awful, a lame attempt for brand recognition I suppose. Here was me hoping for some of the appeal of the wooden Wu minifig (given to Jackie Chan apparently) that appeared in TLNM. Quote
MAB Posted October 31, 2019 Posted October 31, 2019 To me, it looks like there is wood grain on the hands, suggesting it is dyed. But yes, it does look a bit odd as the head is not yellow. It would make more sense if it was, and even more sense if the head was yellow and had a classic smiley face on it. Maybe the idea is that you paint it. And I agree about the better things for £110! I also wonder how they get the count of 30 pieces. A normal minifigure would be 3, or 9 if you take it apart pulling off legs from hips and so on. So I guess there could well be internal parts to hold the arms on and so on, unlike a plastic figure. Quote

I think it's wood, but then why are the hands yellow? 11 hours ago, Lucarex said: They don’t look painted wood to me. Here was me hoping for some of the appeal of the wooden Wu minifig (given to Jackie Chan apparently) that appeared in TLNM. It doesn't look worth $110, especially with the hands. Even if it comes apart, which I doubt. Normal sized lego minfigures made out of wood would be very difficult to produce, but that would be pretty cool. Quote

It seems to come with an assortment of bricks to build objects for it to hold (e.g. a guitar). I'm guessing that's why the hands are made from a different material / treated differently - because they need to be sturdy enough to hold the brick built accessories? It's a definite pass for me with the yellow hands. It also appears to be obscenely expansive for quite a small figure. I thought it was 30cm, but it looks like it may only be around 20cm tall. I think Lego got pretty close to making something with wide appeal, especially adults who would have purchased a larger-scale wooden minifigure as a home décor item, but a few missteps lessens the appeal quite a lot. Lucarex Posted November 1, 2019 Posted November 1, 2019 (edited) So it looks like the hands ARE plastic. Also LEGO Originals “brand” is used to push these as customisable/paint-your-own... All well and good but not sure I’d let my artistic 9yo loose on a figure that cost £110 Edited November 1, 2019 by Lucarex To attach pics Quote
MAB Posted November 1, 2019 Posted November 1, 2019 https://hypebeast.com/2019/10/lego-originals-customizable-wooden-figures 7 inches high. 29 other bricks make up the other parts. Those hands definitely look plastic. Definite pass for me too. Quote
Lucarex Posted November 1, 2019 Posted November 1, 2019 Also guaranteed those attending the pop up in Covent Garden, will have them listed on fleabay at 5-10x cost before the day is over. Good luck with that as they’ll be more widely released and warming shelves in a store near everyone soon enough. Quote

It's only a week until general release, so with posting time, it will probably be just as quick to buy from LEGO. It wouldn't surprise me if there are empty slots at the covent garden event. Quote

As for empty slots, they’ve all been booked up (even a second round) within seconds/minutes of the invite going out. Nothing like the perception of “early exclusive” Thinking about it, and looking at the Lego designers’ own creative efforts (Kraken spear fisherman and Rainbow bleeder), they should have made a range of say 5 of these designs available as limited editions, with a PYO version at half or even third of the £110 price. Lego David Posted November 1, 2019 Posted November 1, 2019 Is this one of the new themes which were leaked a while back? Dots, Zebra, Leaf, or something? Quote

My point was if everyone is going to show up now they have revealed the product that is being sold at the event, and the price. No doubt some will try to sell on at a high price, but the general release date is so close and the VIP release even closer. Quote
Agent 86 Posted November 1, 2019 Posted November 1, 2019 The yellow plastic hands make it an easy pass for me. It’s a shame as I really like the general concept. I guess it’s time to hit Etsy for an alternative! Quote
Terrasher Posted November 1, 2019 Posted November 1, 2019 Big pass. 155CAD for a non-articulated, unbuildable, plain wooden figure? I'm a huge fan of buildable LEGO sets, but all other TLG paraphernalia doesn't interest me. Quote
TeriXeri Posted November 1, 2019 Posted November 1, 2019 Would be a bit more interesting if it were a €130 "go-brick-me" style customizable Brick-built Mega-Minifig instead of wood. Quote
Mylenium Posted November 1, 2019 Posted November 1, 2019 14 hours ago, Mandalorianknight said: It doesn't look worth $110 Correct. One could probably find someone who's into lathing/ turning and wooden toy making and have him do three figures or more. In fact the Erzgebirge region, renowned for wood carving, Christmas figurines and all that jazz, isn't that far away from where I live and I'm pretty sure those little manufactures there would have latched on to this for a fraction of the price years ago if the minifig wasn't a registered exclusive design... Maple Posted November 1, 2019 Posted November 1, 2019 It's good to see that LEGO is finally going after the people with more money than they know what to do with. I mean they haven't had enough overpriced D2C sets recently for these people. What they really needed would a small wooden minifigure. Just remember everyone, this junk is where your money is going. LEGO has fired thousands of employees in Europe in recent years. So much worth it for this junk. Quote

Mylenium There are already people making and selling articulated wooden ones. I've seen some similar to this (not actually this one) at shows and thought they looked nice but were too expensive. And they were about half the price of LEGO's one. Maybe LEGO will be going after them wtih cease and desist orders. Quote
Vindicare Posted November 2, 2019 Posted November 2, 2019 I love it. Not exactly $120 love it. I like how they’re going back to their roots & doing one of, if not the most, iconic piece of their company. I feel like they’ve shot themselves in the foot a bit with this one. They’ve released so many great sets recently that I reckon are still on people’s to buy list. For that price I could get a lot of actual LEGO. I still need to get the new Slave 1. Or for a little more money I can get HS’s Shrimp Shack & Lloyd’s Titan Mech. If it were $100 or less, easy buy. Or if it were the duck, easy buy even at $120. Or if it was simply those bigger retailer minifigs that I’ve been wanting for years. Quote
