Ross Fisher Posted August 22, 2024 Posted August 22, 2024 How are the new rules coming along? I'm particularly curious how the current nations are going to work. You've hinted that it could be very different. I'm curious what the new sandbox will look like. Quote

Ross Fisher Posted August 31, 2024 Posted August 31, 2024 Quick show of hands, who would be interested in some Guelph stories? @Khorne and I are looking at throwing out some builds, probably in the new year. Nothing too joined-up. Not a collab or anything. Just, do your own thing, in Guelph! For anyone not paft of Oleon, you're welcome to join the Foreign Legion, or moc some rebel builds. What does everyone reckon? Quote
Khorne Posted September 6, 2024 Posted September 6, 2024 For those who like a read, I've updated the Essen topic with additional information. The main post has been updated as well, with a table of contents, some rewritten paragraphs with extra information and some new character portraits. In the new lore post, I've integrated some tidbits alluded to in Keymonus' merchant district, such as the existence of a minor faction wishing to return to ducal times and flying the black-gold flag. I've some plans for further additions, but we'll get there when we get there . Quote
LM71Blackbird Posted January 1 Posted January 1 Happy New Year Everyone! Hopefully, 2025 will bring many new inspirations for building (and eventually we'll get Era III pushed out. ) Quote
Darnok Posted January 5 Author Posted January 5 Happy new year everybody! I hope life is going well for each and every one around here - and that things get better if not. Quote

Khorne Posted January 19 Posted January 19 Saw Nosferatu (2024) in the cinema last night and I absolutely loved it. Costume and set design is so on point! It's just barely on the far end for the BOBS-verse (movie is set ca. 1830s), but still a very good period piece. Loved the Victorian-esque English dialogue too. Wisburg (and the movie as a whole) is definitely I vibe I envision for the Free City of Essen, with the gabled roofs, brick building and gothic/dour folks in winter. Although Essen would be more industrial. Nosferatu and Sleepy Hollow probably are two movies really defining Essian atmosphere and style. Now I really want to be building Essian gothic brick building again . If you're into (somewhat artsy) movies, I definitely recommend it. It's has very old school horror vibe with lot of jump scares and the classic Robbert Eggers dreamy touch. Unrelated: will we ever see a conclusion of the El Oleonda conflict? A finale to that story arc to wrap it up before Era III? Quote

Khorne Posted September 26 Posted September 26 The year is 355AE. The Long War has ended, but its shadow lingers across the Old World. While there is an uneasy peace between the Realms, tensions are rising both within the Kingdoms and Beyond. Fellow sailors, brave pioneers! We find ourselves becalmed! In these doldrum days, it behoves us to remember how far we've come. In days past, we might not have dreamt of such horizons. How might our ancestors in those dark times have been impressed if they could see us now. Do you dare to dream of such an age? Tales of Old is setting out to establish the history of the Old World, before the conquest of the Brick Seas began. Faction Leaders in particular are needed, with only minimal commitments. If you fancy yourself a leader, or simply a player in the game of nations, step up and say so here! Quote
evancelt Posted September 26 Posted September 26 I'm in! Sounds fun :) Happy to help lead one of factions Quote
merc Posted September 26 Posted September 26 (edited) Could be a leader if needed. Would wanna know what it entails, but I need something to inspire my brick building again lol. Edited September 26 by merc Quote
Yperio_Bricks Posted September 26 Posted September 26 (edited) Tales of Old happens before BotBS in the timeline? Judging by the coat of arms it is a Castle RPG? Can we consider BotBS dead at this point? Edited September 26 by Yperio_Bricks Quote

The post says 355AE which is roughly 250 years before BoBS, so maybe Elizabethan-esque era? We'll have to wait and see 12 minutes ago, Yperio_Bricks said: Can we consider BotBS dead at this point? The groundwork has been laid. @Ross Fisher and I are just putting the dots on the 'i'. There will be more information in the coming week and an actual launch soon thereafter . 11 hours ago, Yperio_Bricks said: Tales of Old happens before BotBS in the timeline? Tales of Old is intended as a lightweight, fun interim side project exploring a different time period of the BOBS world. It's not in any way meant to be a replacement whatsoever. Quote

That's how it looks, but that's not how it should be! I can see that some members of BotBS are working on ERA III in their free time. The main goal of Era III should be to attract many members to the game. Competitions or cycles with only one month of construction time are good for professionals and people who have enough time to build. Think about it, with competitions or cycles of three or more months, more people can participate. The four factions Corrington, Oleon, Eslandola and Sea Rats should also be present again in Era III. You should not think for a moment about leaving out Eslandola. Is Eslandola the underdog in Era III? The role of the outsider is challenging and more fun! Edited September 29 by NOD Quote

I can see that some members of BotBS are working on ERA III in their free time. But was it worth it? Participation already declined in summer 2023. I assume that some people already knew that there would be a new era comming up and they stopped building mocs for a game that would end anyway. That was more than 2 years ago! As I see it from my limited perspective, the only real flaw of era II was, that players could get rich in no time. Limit royal builds, limit selling royal builds and selling builds in general, add some upkeep and things would have been okay imo. The game was great, the storytelling was great! It was just too easy to get rich. Edited September 29 by Yperio_Bricks Quote

Khorne Posted September 30 Posted September 30 The banners are raised and the world calls for champions. Will you stand with proud Mardier, heir to empire, where wealth and heritage await those bold enough to claim them? Or with Corrington, scarred but unbroken, a realm seeking to rebuild in order to rise stronger than ever? Perhaps you’ll swear your blade to Oléon, land of faith and fire, where knights and clergy march to spread their dominion abroad. Or defend the faltering Pyrite Empire, guardian of the sacred mountain Aplynicia, its borders besieged yet its legacy unyielding. Or will you ride beneath the flag of the Mogholay Sultanate, a young and zealous power destined to challenge the old order? Soon the time will come to choose your cause. (Short) FAQ Will BOBS TOO replace regular BOBS and will there not be an Era III? Firmly no. Era III is still in the works. BOBS Tales of Old is a side project, an escapade into an earlier time frame of the BOBS setting. It is not meant as a replacement whatsoever. More like an expansion pack in game terms, bringing something alternative and new. Is it medieval in style? Yes. But: we are striving more towards the later stages of the medieval period. We are aiming for the mid to late 1400s (1450s - 1500), with early gunpowder, advancements in nautical technologies and the rise of the basic concept of centralized nations. Like BOBS, real-life influences can come from a broad period of time. The earliest bookend for TOO inspiration would be 1360s and the very latest acceptable would be 1520s. Is it fantasy? No. This is 100% a BOBS spin-off, meaning that we are aiming for realism, albeit in a fantasy world. No orcs, elves, dwarfs, dragons, etc. However, like BOBS had its whimsical moments, there is of course room for whimsical-ness and some fantastical elements in Tales of Old as well. Game of Thrones without the dragons. The Witcher without the fantasy creatures or fantasy races. Where is Eslandola!? Eslandola as a seperate nation (and many other offshoots of Mardier) are not independent yet during the Tales of Old time frame, so it is still a part of the kingdom of Mardier. However, Eslandola is certainly not forgotten and more will be revealed later in lore. Why is Mokolei spelled like 'Mogholay'? The Mogholay Sultanate is still very a fledgling nation in Tales of Old, so the "native" spelling is used for added medieval exotic flavor, instead of the more Madrician-centered name and world view of regular BOBS. We are still looking for someone to take up the mantle of Faction Leader for the Mogholay Sultanate. If you feel the urge to answer the call, let it be known! Quote
