Wasn't sure where else to put a discussion like this so here goes.

My son wants this set for christmas:

Its roughly 70ish on bricklink ....

Easy right ...

Well his brother also wants legos but he wants a police car .... And I know if his brothers car is bigger than his he will be upset about it (only a year apart so he has to have everything his brother has ... But different)

I don't know of a police car that was ever built in 8W but I had a rather long dark age so I'm still discovering some awesome sets.

My other thought was buy him a similar pirced police themed set ... However if theres too much in the set his brother wont be happy because all he got was the car and the Ghostbusters.

So I figure I would turn to yall to see what your thoughts are?

They should get presents that cost the same amount and unless it has to be a secret, I would involve them in the process of what things cost.

It's fine for one to get the Ghostbusters car and one to get a larger police set. The Ghostbusters car is a 'luxury', premium object, but it has enough in it, including the figs, to be a good set. They should understand that some things in life cost more than others.

Now if one of them wanted to spend all 70 on a single, rare minifigure, and that's all they would have to open on Christmas Day, that's when I would step in and explain that's not a wise use of your Christmas present.

Retro gives some excellent advice.

If price is the deciding factor, you will of course get more play value out of current sets for the money you spend on a rather rare discontinued set. And to be fair, for $70 you can get a lot more stuff than a single car from the Police line. I would highly recommend discussing this with both your kids - if one really wants the rare item, he has to live with the fact that the other gets "more toys" for the same amount of money.

It is part of life and growing up to discover that one big expensive thing could also have been a number of smaller cheaper things. Accepting that your choices are not shared by others and things will not "match" equally is important to learn.

When my siblings and I were young, we would have some spending money when we went on holiday and had the "responsibility" to choose how to spend it. Our holiday would last about 7 days, more often than not we would eat at the Cafe in a supermarket for our evening meal. My brother would usually decide on the very first night, that he would spend all his money on toys he saw at the supermarket that evening! So, he would buy maybe one larger LEGO set, or a big playset from some other toy. My sister and I would not do that, quite often we would buy smaller things throughout the holiday. Of course, my brother would then learn that having spent all his money, he could not get other things he wanted or saw somewhere else.

We all learned that valuable lesson growing up, it was just a little more difficult for my brother

I would find out if he just wants something Ghostbusters. Because if he does Playmobil had some set out more recently and I am guessing better priced.

Heresy!

All (mostly) jokes aside, talk with your son and think over if daddy can afford the ecto 1 set and for newer sets that he wants?

Every show we do he points it out on every layout ... He wants LEGO ... Ecto ... He already has die cast ectos and still wants the lego version not the later version either lol.

The cost isnt my swaying factor as I can get a great police set for his brother for the same cost.  My fear is if his brother gets three cars and station he will ve upset not that he wont love the ecto just afraid he will want more than the ecto cause his brother got more (equal costs)

As somebody else already mentioned: that would be a lesson he had to learn. He can not have both. Talk to him and explain it to him in advance, let him make the decision himself.
