I had the most bad run of look ever today when trying to watch this movie.

First Mmy mum said we could go on yesterday but then something came up >-| anyway no biggy. Then when we went tonight the screening we were supposed to be in was full (its never full, in all the ten years I've been going there it ahs never been full). Okay still no waorries, I just had to wait an hour for the next one. I grabbed a mcdonalds and waited.

An hour later I got to the screening and began watching the movie.

It had a great start. Not to rushed, not to drawn out, perfect.

Got a bit jumpy when the machine rose from teh ground. Laughed when the ppl got disintegrated, I was enjoying myself.

So the three are in teh car, heading to the kids' mum's house... but no one is there. What is going to happen, have aliens got them? I wanna find out I was saying to myself.

Then:

A SITUATION HAS ACCURED, PLEASE MAKE YOUR WAY TO THE NEAREST EXIT

A stupid loudspeaker anouncment. God I hate those things. We had to leave.

I mean WTF, I had to go home after watching no more then half an hour of the movie. I think it was because of a bomb scare or something but I was really enjoying the movie. :'( *devil*

I thought it was a really great movie :oD

I mean for SF written in the late 1890's, its just amazingly precursory. I just LOVE the idea of a more intelligent species carefuly planning our invasion by burrying their tripods in our own planet withouth mankind even knowing it. Also, as intelligent as they are, the only thing that saved mankind was their lack of immune system !!!!!!! I just love the scene in the basement when the alien drinks a lot of water withouth saying to himself that this will be my downfall !!!!!!

As for the movie itself, it was really well staged, well played and the special effects were really good looking, especially in the first scene when the tripod emerges from the depth of the earth. I loved the way their laser beam pulverised everyone !!!!

After reading your comments, I don't understand how you find that movie scary, it had a particuliar atmosphere, but I really didn't find it scary.

Like always some points just didn't satisfy me !!!

* the son ready to kick some alien butt makes it home alive !!!!!! Come on, the whole military is defeated in 2 minutes and he his alright !!!! Nonsense !!!!!!

* the boat scene: come on you have super intelligent aliens with fantastically powerfull weapons coming to get rid of the human race and a crowd of people massed to take the boat in a narrow street: just shoot there !!!!!!! Nonsense once more!!!!

Guys, I dont get your point about the biological ships !!!!!

First, the ship is runned by an alien: the "lightning" is how the aliens boarded every ships.

Thy need human blood to recreate their natural habitat on earth (hence the red plants).

Finnally an explanation for Apo's point 3:

The book was written in the late 1890's where mankind did not possess all the knowledge we have today concerning bacteries, immune systems... I mean, science made a HUGE leap forward in the 20th century !!!!

So its logical for the author for not explaining in depth what at the time was unknown.

Hope this helped ;)

I can't be bothered to read all the posts but here's my 2 cents.

I love the 1953 Original, and this one wasn't as good for one reason.

The ending.

The effects, sound and acting were great. I really enjoyed it.

And I could have taken his ex-wife's parent's house being untouched (BTW the old couple were the couple from the 50's version).

But his son being alive????

He went down a hill that god incinerated.

Nothing could have survived.

It ruined the movie.

Everything else was fantastic.

P.S: One small quibble. If all electrical applicances were shut down by the lightening (which I liked) how the hell did the dude film the Aliens with his video camera?

READ THE THREAD.

Jesus Christ. I'm starting to wonder if some of you even saw the movie.

Ray: Uh, Manny, replace the solenoid.

Later....

Manny: Ray, I replaced the solenoid and the car worked.

If you're going to shell out at least $7.50 for a movie, at least pay attention to it, you know?

1)i just saw the movie. it's great! however, i think it's a "one time only movie", you're familiar with the story now, so most of the excitement is gone. i don't think the film is interesing enough to see it twice in theaters.

2) you basically have to shut down your brains when you see it or you get into trouble. for instance, the basement was burnt out, but the wooden staircase was just fine; the humvees didn't stop even tho they were quite close to the aliens, the camera was still working, why didn't these superior aliens scan for biosings based on body heat? Even we already have that technology...

3) at first i was a bit irritated by these alien tripods, but i guess they grow on you. these tripods coming out of the forest, looking for humans with these giant searchlights in the mist... the scene was awesume...

4) it's not an epic film, good versus evil. it's not "Independence Day II". what makes this story interesting is the fact that it's telling the story of an individual trying to survive while disaster and misery strike. it's a nice story but in the end, i loose focus. even tho i like the approach, i miss the great good versus evil... it wants to show the individual and his struggle, but it's not intense enough... btw, tom cruise is not particularly "your average guy", even tho his acting is not bad...

5) the music score needed a bit of pink floyd, but then again, i say that for every film i see :P
