I recently pulled out LEGO Robotics Invention System Set 9719 from the basement.  I believe this is the first mindstorms set.  It has a robot claw arm pictured on the box. https://img.brickowl.com/files/image_cache/larger/lego-robotics-invention-system-set-9719-packaging-25.jpg

I believe it is like this:

I received the set used from a friend when it was only a few years old, and haven't really touched it.

The instructions are complete, but the instructions for the robot claw arm pictured were never part of the set.  As far as I can tell it was an optional DL from the lego website.  As this was about 20 years ago, you can guess that those instructions are no longer on the website.  In fact, I have only roughly pieced together conclusion that they were ever on the website, I may well be wrong.

I know this doesn't compare to modern Mindstorm options.  But I really have my heart set on building this claw arm.

Does anyone have any leads on where these directions might be available?  It's old enough that it is not in the usual places that I know of that record instructions or alt. builds.

Please and Thankyou.

Else, I am sorry, I am not strictly certain this belongs in this forum (maybe in the "looking for" forum), but I thought the mindstorm nature of this search might put it here instead of general lego places.

Oh man, i remember building that robot arm, then simply copying the demo-code and marvelling at all the intricate movements.

I think the instructions were hidden somewhere in the software.

How are you programming your RCX?

Fortunately for my purposes, it doesn't have to function.  By which I mean I'm not programming the RCX.  I do maintain an XP laptop for unrelated legacy reasons, but there's a chance that even XP is too advanced for the original mindstorms software.  And, I doubt it's worth the hassle to me.  I'll upgrade to modern mindstorms when I get serious.

You can use the original RIS 2.0 software on Windows XP without any problems, and it can also be made to work on 32bit Windows 7 - you just need the driver for the IR tower, which you can get from here: http://www.robotc.net/download/rcx/

You can also download ROBOTC from the same page, if you want to have a go at more advanced coding.

Yes they are, along with instructions (and their programs) for many other cool robots!
