BR 05-003

4-6-4 Steam Locomotive

Hello Everyone,

as previously said in my topic about the DB 200-116 I can present my third locomotive of my German project: the BR 05-003

br05-003-001.jpg

br05-003-002.jpg

br05-003-003.jpg

This time I've designed a large steam locomotive, 8 studs wide and 74 studs long (76 with the magnet) to participate at the contest OcTRAINber! :classic:

br05-003-004.jpg

br05-003-005.jpg

The locomotive did regular service in express passenger trains, from Hamburg to Berlin. The speed was 175 km/h and in 1944, the streamline plates were removed, the BR 05-003 has been rebuilt and lost the futuristic design of the BR 05-001.

br05-003-033.jpg

My model as always has front and back lights

br05-003-008.jpg

br05-003-009.jpg

Realizing this locomotive was very enjoyable because I love steam locomotives ... especially the German ones!

The Swoosh is not very accentuated compared to other entries but to comply with scale 1:45 I could not make it longer than this :sweet:

Enjoy the pictures

I will be back next months with my next project called "European Tour" ...stay tuned!

Another fine steamer of yours!
From the rubber rings on the drivers, I gather that the drivetrain is in the engine, not in the tender? What motor(s) did you use?
Now I'm waiting for the dark red streamlined version... or perhaps some matching, steel-blue FD-Zug express train coaches?

By the way: It must be hard to keep your cat from chasing all those trains...

Wow, just wow

Maybe you could put tr. yellow tiles in the front of the front light, to make the light warmer

Thanks for the hint but in the front there'is no room for tiles

Hi and thank you Tenderlok... the motors are two medium PF motors hidden in the boiler ...and correct: the cat is a menace for my trains, in the picture it's surveyed! :sweet:

Looks fantastic! I really like the red ribbing below the cabin. What is the ladder piece on the tender? I've never seen it before.

Oh wow! That is a beauty. I bet it does a good job keeping the brush down along the right of way (grin). You did a great job with the fine details over the long boiler, really captures the feel of the prototype (but like Tenderlok said, I'd love to see the streamlined version too (grin some more... you've spoiled us here in the audience))

The ladders are custom pieces from Zephyr1934 ...you can find rods and ladders in his shop

Bloomin heck, she's smoother than a babie's tush! Really well detailed, the electrics must have been hard to sort out.

The main electrical wiring is in the tender and it was the hardest (and boring) part to do :classic:

Thanks zephyr1934 (also for your custom parts) but I think I'm not good enough to realize the streamlined version :sweet:

You're selling yourself short. It may be difficult, but you never know until you give it a go. Try starting digitally and playing around with the curves. I've seen many of your models as well as the techniques that you've used (some of which I would never have though of) and I don't see why you say that you don't have the skill to build such a model. Try it out and have fun with it!

beautiful realization, as usual from you.

I there any technical reason for not using the custom made rods?

regards

Sergio

Oh you've caught me ...jokes aside this project is complete and I have to find new idea for other locomotives ... thanks for your special words!:blush:

Hi Sergio, you're always welcome ...the reason is quite simple: when I realize huge steam engines with XL BBB wheels I like to use this technique that reminds me the locomotives made by  Marklin ...see also my BR 01 and BR 22:

What part it is the ladder at the rear of the tender?

Hi Marbleman, as already said the ladder is a custom part from Zephyr1934's shop

Wow! I don't know what I like more - the train or your cat!!!

I think I'll have to pick your cat because I am just too jealous of that perfect steam train!

Keep up the great work!

Lego and pet is a perfect combination ...the cat keeps company during the design phases, so when the job is finished I want the cat to be part of the goal!

May I ask what wheels you used for the train, as I am unsure whether to go BBB or LEGO for wheels, and would like to know your decision when making this.

Hi Vilhelm22 I've used 6 XL (Extra Large) BBB wheels: 2 blind, 2 flanged and 2 flanged with groove and rubber o-ring (for the grooving process see this topic from Toastie: BBB wheels with rubber) :classic:

Great work as usual! Exceptional representation of this loco in Lego form.

But if I may just add some nerd-knowlegde:

Actually, 05 003 never looked like this, as it used to be cab-forward prototype. The firebox was at the front of the locomotive, too, which required it to be fired with coal dust, which never really worked. When the streamlining was removed, it was also turned around and rebuilt as a regular locomotive

But i suspect you propably already knew this, since you correctly mentioned the year it was rebuilt, and also built the loco with regular trailing axles (the two other lcoos of this type had a bogie housing the rear trailing axles).

Here's a picture of 05 003 as a streamlined, cab-forward locomotive:

Thanks RogerSmith for your compliments ...I knew that the cab was at the front in the streamlined version but thanks for the picture! :classic:
