Deinonychus Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 I recently started hitting Bricklink and ebay to pick up a few neat space sets I may have missed out on while I was younger, or that I find more interesting now that my tastes in LEGO designs have shifted. So I'm wondering if there are any good space sets that perhaps don't get talked-up too much, but are still great sets worth having. I'm especially interested in sets are way better in reality then they look on the box. Sleeper hits that most of us may have missed out on. Any candidates? Quote
Batbrick Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 I have one of the old UFO sets, which never looked good on the box, also because of several large parts, but I think they're very underrated and are great sets. Insectoids was another theme that was underrated, I have the medium dragonfly set, that though has the large light up stick, is very neat and has some good construction. Hope that helps :-) Batbrick Away! >:-) Quote
natelite Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 i was told the zenon (aka unitron) line was quite rare. doesn't look that impressive but maybe you like it? Quote
CP5670 Posted February 14, 2008 Posted February 14, 2008 (edited) I think the 6915 Warp Wing Fighter is the best example of this. For me, it's one of the top two or three space sets of any kind, but it doesn't seem to be in great demand. Brand new ones generally go for less than $20 on ebay. I saw one for $13 just a few days ago. I might get another one for parts at those prices. A minor modification to it also allows the guy in the back to sit upright. As for sets with crappy box art, one that comes to mind is the 6894 Invader. The picture is taken with the wings folded in, which makes it look really ugly in my opinion. The wings can be folded out and it looks a lot nicer that way. It also comes with a few rare parts that are unique to it. i was told the zenon (aka unitron) line was quite rare. doesn't look that impressive but maybe you like it? Those are somewhat rare because three of the four sets were only released in the US. I think the sets are pretty hit or miss. The monorail is cool just because it's a monorail, but apart from a few nice ideas (the radar dish mainly) is generally not well designed. I like their smaller base a lot though. The Star Hawk II (1789) actually seems to be in very high demand on ebay and BL and goes for much higher prices than other stuff around its time period. It doesn't look that great to me in either the box pictures or the instructions, but I don't actually have one. Edited February 14, 2008 by CP5670 Quote
DJ Force Posted February 15, 2008 Posted February 15, 2008 If you want to check out some cool Space sets, please take a look at my sales ;-) http://eurobricks.hosting.ipsyn.com/eurofo...showtopic=11674 I built all sets and took a photo of them in front of their boxes, so you can even compare the real thing with the box art. Plus, if you Quote

snefroe Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 (edited) insectoids is seriously underrated imo. the figs are crap (i just don't like the heavy drawing on figs and the heads were not brilliant either) but the sets, especially the largest is worth the money. another theme that's really underrated is the explorers theme. Love the colors, love the figs and that large ship is sweeeeeet and really really really big! Spyrrius is also underrated, especially the large robot if you're just going for that one set... hm...: 6927 for some reason, not really popular and most defenitely in the shadows of the spaceships of those days. but it's a nice one, in nice colors, but obviously, fairly simple. 6949 this is a must have, if you're asking me. nobody cares for spyrrius, but this one is actually pretty cool. it's not as if there are many hidden features in it, but building this was a nice adventure Edited February 27, 2008 by snefroe Quote

If I knew then what I know now I'd have never used my teeth to pry LEGOs apart. It is still a fantastic set, probably one of the best looking of the Classic vehicles. It now holds a place of honor on the shelf with the Mega Core Magnetizer and the MT-101 Armored Drilling unit. But you guys have convinced me I need to check out some Insectoids sets. Lots of big plastic wheels in those...and I haven't gotten a set with big plastic wheels that I've hated yet. And speaking of Exploriens, what about the Explorien Starship (6982)? Is it worthy to hang from the ceiling with my Mission Commander, Galactic Mediator, and Deep Freeze Defender...or is it really as ugly and ungainly as it looks? ;-) Quote

It's as big as the others and although clunky in places, it's really cheap (I've seen them go for Quote
blueandwhite Posted February 27, 2008 Posted February 27, 2008 Many of the newer space themes get a bad rap simply because the respective lines only lasted one year. One of the crowning achievments of classic castle, space and town was that each theme carried over from year to year, meaning that the sets integrated well. With newer lines like Ice Planet or Space Police II, fans were given a throw away line of sets that didn't match up with their earlier collection. This made collecting a large, coherent collection pretty much impossible. When windscreens are blue one year, hot orange the next, green the year after that and so forth. I suspect alot of people simply got fed up of not being able to develop a comprehensive collection of sets. Quote

SuvieD Posted February 28, 2008 Posted February 28, 2008 Blacktron II is actually a really nice series that is sort of black balled because of the excellent series Blacktron I was. In many ways those sets are superior to the originals. 6878 and 6981 are both great sets and thought the figures are not quite as great the sets themselves have a very nice classic feel but have some ingenious use of parts. I only have one Insectoids set (6905, which isn't very good) but want to get one or two others. The 6919 Planetary Prowler especially looks good to me in the pictures. I wasn't that impressed by the large ground vehicle from just skimming through the instructions, although it does come with a number of rare and useful parts. Talking of which, I feel that all the Spyrius and Explorien sets are underrated and so are very cheap (I got the whole Spyrius line for ~ Quote
