May I  present my WIP which is now called Carniveil (wasThe People Mover')that title will become more apparent later or perhaps only on my entry. it is a great defense I hold tightly secret for now (i decided to go defensive/passive aggressive for a non-violent stance) I just hope I can build this wacky racer. Its a challenge for me.

the idea has 3 stages. one, is to have a wacky looking racer. it will no doubt start at the back of the grid, then it will transform, then it will open up its defenses once it is in front of all the other wacky racers. yes, in my mind it will no doubt get to the front of the wacky race through LEGO City.

manual steering and manual drive (push) operation but with 1x M motor to operate the features. no remote control PF.

I started on this idea on day 1 and got to work as soon as I could.  Free building the manual gearbox clutch system steering and a chassis. all worked well until i needed to make the main defense unit. which would not fit into the space I ended up with. normally a wacky racer would just add extra space but this has to conform to certain size limits, (which will become apparent when stage 2 is reached in the race) wheel base length/ width etc and I need to stick with the only small wheels I have so as not to blow out the build size.

this is what first free build ended up with

img_2772.jpg

all the clutch gearing worked really well to my surprise. but as said it didn't fit with the main defense unit. all gearing and motors need to be vertical aligned now with side levers to operate. except steering.

so i decided to start again:angry: this time starting with the defense unit itself, and then work backwards through to the gearbox/clutch arrangement.

so far so good. I may even have spave for a small engine to go in as I know you technic buffs will want to see an engine and heck, its a challenge for me to fit one and that's the point of this!

chassis is a bit dubious at the moment where the engine connects.

it may look obvious to what the defense weapon is, but there is a little bit more to it, but ill try keeping it secret for as long as i can.

more progress to come in a couple days perhaps.

Yes there will be a lot of gears which is a massive space constraint I'm trying to deal with. Although I have had a successful evening and remodelled some gears vertically and changed a few operations to manual which saves space and needless over complexity. In fact my evening was so successful that I am concerned I'll have a massive problem evening soon and have to rebuild all I've just finished.

I have moved the engine and put the battery box in place and made space for some more gears and clutches.

the chassis is much stiffer now.

The People Mover is seemingly foot powered now to other  wacky race contenders with the driver and passengers seat down low out front... is this why it's called The People Mover?...

Definitely starting at the back of the wacky grid this one.

But there is a fake working V6 top fuel style motor that will be connected to the rear diff that will fit somewhere...

Having fun building this thing that's for sure, great contest/challenge.

they do move a few mm. the axle has 3 (+0) on it (lift arms?) to bump the 'pistons'.

would have loved to make a bigger engine but V6 is all I could manage in the space were it will end up.

Never work with children or animals and now string. This took a long time to get right and was very finicky finger work.

The rear unit is operated manually now, it was to be motorised but it didn't work so well as intended. I really like how manual operation feels too, so I've ditched all PF. Each side is independent which is necessary in my vision of what the wacky race is.

it gives a bit of my defence away but there will be more to it for surprise factor. It won't be too astoundingly technical though :sceptic:

this is probably the most technical thing I will ever create in Lego so I'm very happy.

this unit in the video below will be connected to the driveline of the People Mover as the 'People Plunger' that will be on the car, needed to have a single way of rotation regardless of whether the People Mover was going forward or reverse.

drive enters the bottom diff in either reverse or forward, then will exit the top diff only turning one direction.

it could be well refined but it fits in the vehicle and i have no time to refine it as there is still a lot of other stuff to build.

I like the concept, very interesting.

I also like that you've gone manual, I personally prefer 1 motor driving all functions, but manual is in second place for me

Good luck getting everything together, seems like that will be the biggest challenge.

@BrickbyBrickTechnic I'm kind of glad I went full manual as I can fit more variation of functions in. The BB and motor took up a lot of space.

playability is important of course whichever way one goes.

also I wouldn't have challenged my thinking to come up with a one direction output thingy for when pushing the vehicle around.

It sits quite snugly next to the 'washing machine' (also driven off the drive shaft) Drive to the 'plunger' will go to the top turntable.

Sorry, don't want to overload and bore everyone with updates too much but I just had to mention that I refined the 'one way' unit tonight.

I swapped out the knuckle cogs for normal cogs and changed the 'brake' for them as the knuckle cogs left too much backlash when the input drive changed direction. Plus they didn't feel smooth to turn. Now it works like a well made wind up watch.

Name change! Hope that's ok, as this new name is far more fitting to what this is becoming.

A photo to celebrate the name change of the almost finished 'plunger'

this is a tummy churning ride that slowly goes up, then crashes down fast with gravity. This is why I needed the one way drive thingy as it's driven off the vehicle moving either forwards or backwards but the plunger ride obviously must only run one way.  The whole thing spins on the turntable too for extra gut wrench.

I need to build a softer landing somehow for the chair.

It almost seems like that's a pre-race wacky function - to shake up all your opponents before they race against you!

Also, I think the name change was a good idea, as "people mover" didn't really sound very wacky...

:classic: smartypants!

there will be a bit more going on but any pre-race advantage is good!

I saw a tire, without rim, mounted on edge at the base as a shock absorber.

That's an idea I not thought about! Still haven't worked on that yet though as I've been spending my last week of Lego time on the steering to the drivers seat.

No steering wheel though as that's too normal so this has a head steering mechanism where the driver can just turn their head left or right to steer the vehicle.

all connected to the HOG and to the adjustable height seats that have a low carnival mode and a higher, more reclined race mode for reasons that will become obvious later.

 Slowly getting there.

 Building, or sabotaging?

Dam! Has to be sabotage, I had so many technical issues this week.

Well spotted, thanks!

CARNIVEIL

1.jpg

Carniveil.

If a wacky race is all about fun then there should be some carnival rides. And one operated by children (scale dictated children) just can’t be refused!

Free sandwiches and free rides for all wacky race entrants on the ‘plunger’ (a turning, gut churning gravity drop) and ‘washing machine’ (just gut churning).

From the era of blocky Lego and blocky graphics comes the look of the Carniveil to honour the early nineties wacky wheels.

All manual features of the Carniveil include

-HOG steering

-6cyl engine driven from the driveline at two locations

-‘washing machine’ ride driven off the vehicle driveline

-‘plunger’ ride driven off the driveline through a double differential, one way output that lets the plunger operate in only one direction regardless of vehicle direction.

-‘clothes dryer’ defence operated by 2x Lego string (x77ac50)

-adjustable height front seats for carnival mode and race mode.

-drivers steering operated by head swivel of driver (attached to HOG and seats)

-‘Veil’ mode (fire engine)

- clutch switch to disengage plunger for ‘Veil’ mode.

My interpretation of the wacky race was like the Mille Miglia or cannonball run where all the race happens with normal citizen activity through Lego City.

The idea of the Carniveil is to upset all the tummies of other entrants by supplying food and rides pre-race. Then when the race starts, the Carniveil, having to start at the back of the race so no one sees, transforms into the fire engine and speeds off through the field as all contestants must let emergency vehicles through.

2.jpg

Then the ‘clothes dryer’ is deployed once at the front to stop other racers getting by. Don’t try and force your way past or you’ll end up killing children…Which is not in the spirit of a fun wacky race.

thanks for kind comments.

its great to have finished as it was a little stressful to find time to build this thing and thinking I may not get it finished in time. I guess we all have that problem though.

good luck to all, its been fun!

I might get around to building 42053 and 42054 now. Yay, just following instructions sounds good for a while.
