Hey everyone,
I'm a complete newb/noob at this kind of thing so go easy

I'm trying to make a lab shaker by incorporating a Whitworth quick return which changes rotation into linear motion. This video is pretty much what I would like to make (maybe slightly more durable) that would allow a small attachment for a flask but I've no idea of the names of the lego parts I would need and spent about 2 hours searching through tons of parts and driving myself half crazy. If anyone would be able to help me out I'd be so grateful.

Thanks

Welcome to Eurobricks @haveadug! I hope you stick around, it's good fun here.

Although I know my way around mechanics, I would go and ask the folks over in the Technic subforum; they are far more likely to know what you need!

Good day and welcome to eurobricks. I've made an approximate LDD file of what was in the video, I hope you'll understand better the concept and it'll be easier to replicate and/or change to your needs. download

Excellent, thank you so much. Forgive my ignorance but what program is used to open the lxf file? And would that supply the names/ID of the parts I would need?

Thanks again!

The program is Lego Digital Designer (LDD) , it is an official program to build digitally http://ldd.lego.com

Once opened the file , you can click on any part to see it's name and number :classic: By clicking Ctrl+B you can export a .xlsx parts list with images (Microsoft Excel Open XML Format Spreadsheet file). I made one right now for this mechanism: download

Is there another place you can get parts ordered? I went through the list here: https://shop.lego.com/en-GB/Pick-a-Brick

However some of the key pieces were missing when I copied in the name or number. Only 39/47 were available, I tried US in case it was just missing in the UK but sadly was the case for both. Thanks for all the help

Go to the Akiyuki GBC thread:

and scroll down to the Ball Factory topic

that particular GBC has LOTS of examples of motion/movement like this.

plenty of videos, LDD files, and PDF's to help you out
